Teaching a puppy to leash walk next to a walker or scooter can be a challenge. Be patient and clearly communicate WHERE you want puppy to walk so he doesn't get bumped by the equipment.

Slow feeders are an excellent tool for keeping your dog busy and engaged. This Kong slow feeder is one of my favorites.

Having your dog outside in the hot Arizona summer can be a challenge. A kiddie pool or even a little dog pool with some water might help Cool your pooch off. If your dog is hesitant about jumping right in, try and encourage them with treats or peanut butter, yum!

Training cots are excellent tools for outside training, or even giving your dog a comfy place to lay down. The design allows air to flow freely underneath your dog so they stay cool and in place.

Having a multi dog household can definitely be a challenge! Remember to separate your dogs when practicing leash skills so each pup gets the individual attention and focus they need to learn leash manners.

Bob and I were on a walk yesterday and we had to cut our session short when this Javelina wanted to have a stare down with me. Take no chances around wildlife, Javelinas can be aggressive if they have babies around.

Bob just started a 10 day Board and Train Puppy program. Along with basic obedience skills and loose leash walking, Bob is working on getting comfortable in his crate and learning to use the potty yard outside more consistently.
I also love to encourage confidence building skills during leash work. Foreign distractions like strangers and other dogs can terrify a young puppy, so implementing a way to redirect them can make a huge difference. I like to make sure I have treats on walks for these distractions.

Working on Downstays with Winnie. I tend to over gesticulate to add a little drama when I'm increasing duration. Winnie is becoming wise to my ways, so I might look like a clown with all my jumping around.
Dog training is hard work, but it can also be super fun and emotionally rewarding for everyone!

Isn't Dexter beautiful. This guy is so full of energy and loves going on walks. We worked on confidence building exercises and loose leash walking, he's so smart!

Udall park is a terrific spot for training! I like to skirt the dog park with my pups and get that excitement to a manageable level.

We don't actually go inside the dog park. We just hang out around it. The dogs can watch all the activity, which is a solid distraction for them on leash 🐕

This week we decided to try a head halter or "gentle leader" on Koda. He responded very well to it, but we are careful to keep the sessions very short (only a couple minutes each) until he is more comfortable using it.

Before I decide to change the equipment I am using for a dog, I make sure I have exhausted all other skills and tricks I know. Some dogs respond incredibly well to the sensation that a gentle leader provides, which is a light scruff at the back on the neck. There's also more control in directing your dog.

Sammich is an adult Bull Terrier who is working on "place" by the door. His owner is practicing his duration for stay and using the opening and closing of the door as a distraction.

This is extremely helpful for a dog who might be reactive or overly excited when people come over, or when the door is used.

Koda is fastly becoming a favorite! Right away he showed me a plethora of obedience skills he already knows, and recalls extremely well around the property. We segued immediately into leash walking and intermediate obedience training. He's problematic when there's distractions around but he is learning to redirect at an accelerated rate. Can't wait for our next session this week 🐕😻

Dutch is a 6 month old pup already at 60+ pounds. He is learning door manners, because his size can be dangerous around small kids and elderly if he gets too excited. He has been so attentive for training, I think I'm in love with those ears 🤩

Give your dog something to keep their mind stimulated while you are away, these suction cup tether ballz have an opening to shove some treats in there to create extra interest! The bell is an added plus.

Ruby is building her confidence outside with some simple redirecting techniques and some good old basic obedience. Positive reinforcement is the key to getting your dog confident and calm on the leash.
