πŸ“£ Ruff House Update:
A few weeks back I was wondering why this was taking me so long to type up and one day in church I realized what it was... I didn't want to stop helping people. πŸ˜’

That is my passion, to help others in whatever way I can and with this business it is in their relationship with their dogs.

At this time, Michael has gotten a new full-time military job πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ so I am cutting back on work to be a stay at home mom for my kiddos, which I was craving. πŸ₯° Time goes by fast and I was missing out on a lot in these kids lives. I am happy to be home, going to the park with Theodore, cooking yummy meals and so on.

Teddy started Preschool two days a week which he is enjoying. =) Lauren is in 5th grade and becoming a wonderful young lady.

I will start Ruff House back again when Teddy goes to school full-time, we are just on a hiatus.

I still have in my plans to do classes every once in awhile once I get used to this new schedule like; Therapy, Agility and Tricks.

Feel free to reach out to say hi or whatever, I'm still here, just in a different role. I'd love to meet you at the park to hang out with Teddy, grab a cup of coffee and go for a walk, etc. Just know I have a Malinois in a little boy's body that needs to move around πŸ˜‰

In other great news, Maple Bacon got certified in Therapy work through Alliance of Therapy Dogs. So we will continue our passion of bringing joy and smiles to others in that respect. We hope to get started next month. ☺️

Thanks for being a part of our journey! 🐢🐾
Stay tuned...

πŸ“’ Training Tip
Did you know, chewing is a natural settling and relaxing behavior?

We strive to give our dogs something to chew on each afternoon. 🌀

Some of our dogs’ favorites are bully sticks, beef cheeks, Himalayan yak chews, collagen chews, frozen stuffed Kongs, marrow bones, and chicken feet.

🐢 We had a client ask us once is it okay for my dog to tear apart cardboard boxes? Yes, of course!
Just know, they may decide to chew apart a box before you get it's contents out, so be sure to keep them away from your dog if you don't want them getting into the box before you. πŸ˜‚

Do you give your dogs chews? If so, what are their favorite chews? Tell us in the comments below. Be sure to like and follow us for more training tips.

πŸ“’ It is important to teach your dogs to be respectful towards each other around chews, toys, affection and exciting tug play. 🐢

When you do this with house mates it will help transfer in other situations with other dogs.

Timing, Patience & Consistency are key. πŸ—

Can your dogs hang around each other (or other dogs) while one plays with a toy, chews a chewy or gets affection from a person? Let us know in the comments below. ⬇️

πŸ’› Tuesday Training TipS‼️ 🧑

Are you making these common mistakes when using food for training?

❓ Not being clear with your marker (terminal bridge) word:
βœ… Say β€œyes,” THEN reach for the treat and deliver it to your dog.
βœ… Using β€œyes” or a clicker lets us tell the dog exactly what we are rewarding. If you reach for the treat before you say yes, your dog will want to look at your hands and treat pouch for that information rather than listening to you.
βœ… If you repeat yes a bunch of times without rewarding, we lose the value of yes as a conditioned reinforcer.

❓ Free feeding or over feeding:
βœ… It’s difficult to use food to motivate a dog that is already full or has it available for free 24/7.
βœ… Compare your dog to a dog body condition score chart to see if they are a healthy weight.
βœ… Adjust their meals to account for food or treats given during training, and pick their bowl up after meal time is over, after about 15 minutes when the bowl is placed down.

❓ Working above your dog’s learning level:
βœ… Most dogs will stop being interested in food when they are super excited or super stressed. That means those situations are above your dog’s current learning level. We want to work at the level where the dog can best learn and retain information, and not move to the next level until they have mastered the current one.

❓ Using food to distract your dog:
βœ… Your dog licking peanut butter off a plate while you trim their nails might work, for as long as the peanut butter lasts.
βœ… For long term results, break nail trims down into smaller steps and use that food to reward your dog when they meet your criteria, rather than relying on it to keep them from paying attention to what’s happening.

❓ Conflicting with other motivators:
βœ… If you call your dog away from playing with another dog to give them a treat and leash them up, your dog may decide they would rather keep playing than get that treat.
βœ… Instead, call your dog over, give them a treat, and let them go right to playing whenever possible.

Pick one of these to improve upon and let us know in the comments below which one you'll be working on. 😊

Persistence pays off!

Not only in training dogs, but also in getting that perfect photo 🀌🏻 πŸ“Έ 🀣

We were working on their stay command together so it was the perfect opportunity to add a challenge by squatting down to get a cute photo. πŸ₯°

πŸ€” What kinds of challenges do you add in for your dog during their stay command? Let me know in the comments below, I love to hear other fun and creative ideas.

πŸ’‘ Some other ideas to add challenges for your dogs stay command is turn your back on them, circle around them, pretend to pick something up, go out of sight, open your front door, drop a treat and so much more. πŸ˜†
Try some of these out and let me know how your dog does. πŸ‘πŸ»

This is Calypso, an 11 month old Bouvier. We worked on her leash walking skills, relaxation, sit-stay and down-stay commands. She rocked it! πŸ‘πŸ»
