Paws&Claws Animal Rescue of Quay County, Inc

RECAP 2024:

💚194 pets entered the rescue
💚59 pets were adopted
💚7 pets were reclaimed by their owners
💚119 pets were transferred to partner rescues
💚25 pets went to our prison program and Thanks to the patience and dedication of the guys at Eastern New Mexico Correctional Center in Clayton, 15 dogs have completed basic obedience training
💚208 community pets received free vaccines thanks to PetcoLove
💚87 community pets have been transported to P.E.T.S clinic in Amarillo, TX to get spayed and neutered
💚312 community pets have been spayed and neutered, thanks to Angela Cerci with rezdawg, Dr. Susan Meany and her team, and the sponsors NMDOG, Bonner Family foundation, Bissel Pet Foundation, PetcoLove

🐶Cash🐶 graduated from the prison program a couple weeks ago and is still looking for her forever home 🏡 💕

Female, 3 years old, 45 lbs, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped with lifetime registration!

She gets along great with human and dogs!

From our dog trainer Emily Priddy:
“I saw the most incredible obedience demonstration this morning at the prison in Clayton. One of our beautiful dogs - Cash - topped off her two-minute down-stay with a spectacular recall. To pass the test, the handler has to walk 20 feet away and then call the dog.
That's impressive enough, especially in a room full of people, other dogs, and loud noises, but Cash and her favorite human took it up several notches: Instead of just walking 20 feet, her handler walked about 30 feet, then climbed a flight of stairs to the second-story walkway and called her from up there. She ran past at least three or four dogs and a dozen people, then up the stairs to her handler, who scooped her up and carried her back downstairs while she peeked over his shoulder like a puppy, wagging her tail the whole time.”

This summer, the Northeast New Mexico Correctional Center invited Paws and Claws Animal Rescue of Quay County to bring 20 dogs to the prison for a foster-and-train program in which the dogs spend a few weeks living with inmates at the prison, who work with them on basic obedience.

To graduate from the program, the dogs must pass a special test that basically takes the AKC's Canine Good Citizen test and kicks it up a notch. To pass, the dogs must:

1. Walk on a loose lead.
2. Keep the lead loose while their handler greets another dog/handler team.
3. Allow the evaluator to examine their ears, teeth, and paws.
4. Sit on command, then stay for a full minute with their handler 20 feet away.
5. Lie down on command, then stay for TWO full minutes with their handler 20 feet away.
6. Recall from at least 20 feet away.
7. Respond appropriately to a noise distraction.
8. Respond appropriately to a movement distraction, which usually involves another handler jogging past with a dog.
9. Calmly hang out with the evaluator for three minutes while their handler is out of sight.
10. Hold a one-minute sit-stay for an alternate handler while the handler walks to the end of the leash.
11. Hold a two-minute down-stay for an alternate handler while the handler walks to the end of the leash.
12. Walk on a loose lead with an alternate handler.
