Heat and humidity have returned to the Midwest! Horses can acclimate to hot and humid weather conditions; however, air temperature and relative humidity can affect your horse’s ability to cool themselves.

It is recommended to avoid (or use caution when) riding or exercising a horse when the combined air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity (%) surpass 150. For example, if the temperature is predicted to be 92 F with 69% relative humidity, the combination of the two is 161.

When the air temperature + relative humidity is less than 130, horses are very effective at cooling themselves. Between 130 and 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is decreased. When the combination is greater than 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is greatly reduced, and if the combination is greater than 180, conditions could become fatal if the horse is stressed.

One of the greatest challenges people have with horses...
Have you ever had a hard-to-catch horse?
---------
On a serious note, the Quality during (or lack of) Interaction while catching the horse influences everything that follows in the session.

So many people teach their horses unwanted responses by attempting to use quick fixes to avoid "or mask conflict."

Covered arena project is completed and we are working our horses in hand. There is a 40' diameter round pen in the back area, and we have ground poles and various 'furniture' to help our seniors stay toned. Our goal was to create the ideal environment for working with horses from the ground. Our retired and recuperating horses have GGT footing to protect their soft tissue and joints. We are thrilled with the results of this long awaited project.
