Teaching pups like Biscuit to understand how to properly interact with kids is important! Kids are naturally higher and more sporadic energy for dogs to take in than adults (I mean, most of the time anyway…) so it can be much harder for them to control impulses like jumping and mouthing. Additionally, kids also have to learn how to interact and communicate properly with their puppies. Kids have to know how their energy and movements impact the puppy. Learning that disengaging or freezing is the response to stop a puppy’s energy from overflowing and becoming unwanted behaviors is the first lesson kids learn here. Remember that so long as a dog’s behavior isn’t dangerous, destructive, or unstable, we starve that behavior out of their “vocabulary” by removing anything that’s feeding it. What’s feeding it, for most dogs, is us. Our movement, noise, or eyes/attention are all things that a behavior needs in order to remain relevant to the dogs. They do those behaviors because it feels good (releasing their hyperactive physical energy) and it’s getting them what they want most in that moment, which is to interact with you/the child. A dog will not think to himself, “Whoa, I’m way too excited and might accidentally knock this child over.” But, the child can tell them that! Not with words, and not by going away (so long as we’re not seeing those 3 disqualifying factors above) but by showing them the behavior isn’t one they’ll interact with, making it irrelevant and useless. It’ll then fade and soon extinguish all together within their interactions. It requires consistency and confidence, so don’t be shy about coaching your child before the puppy is out to play. Games like “Red Light, Green Light” are good ways for younger children to learn, while older kids or those who may be a bit more mature for their age can usually grasp the concept fairly quickly. Of course, no child should be interacting with a dog they either don’t know or don’t have control/communication with without adult supervision. Ensure your dog and child have clear boundaries and communication by teaching these skills!

The Wonder Pups are 6 weeks old today!! Their final PAT scoring will be done tomorrow, and they’ll officially begin family recommendations! I’m playing with the idea of only approving after two weeks of training.. but we’ll see! If you can believe it, Miss Purple can already link “Touch” with the Yes-noise! 😮 Reminds me of a couple of Ari’s last pups who had Sit offers by 6 weeks. These guys do too! Videos coming soon.

It’s been a busy couple weeks with our B&T students! Cooper the Golden came to us because he didn’t know how to make friends, charged other dogs on leash and off, struggled with fence and barrier reactivity as well as anxiety. Kittle the Bernedoodle came to us for help with his anxiety. Like many bernedoodles I’ve seen, Kittle presents with an inconsistent variation of confidence. Unfortunately, he had a bad experience with someone and this severely impacted his ability to engage with others and process human social cues. And Lucy, our pyre/husky/Shep mix also came to us for social skills. Lucy felt it was her job to maintain balance among other females in her groups, and so had to learn how to control that impulse as well as trust me/us humans to balance the others appropriately. Each of these dogs are graduating this week and I’m very happy with their progress! Cooper has made new friends and knows how to engage in friendly play, and can go on walks without being reactive. Kittle can now better handle his anxieties and has found his early confidence in humans being restored; now, he can look to us to see if he’s safe, and each time we show him (not tell him) he is, we get closer to his full individual confidence. And Lucy will have her siblings come to class to help us show them the same balancing and social skills Lucy has come to learn… and she’s going to continue to work on those obedience skills that pyres and huskies both absolutely loathe 😂 So proud of these special dogs and their families!

Okay everyone… I’ve held this in for long enough! After the loss of Ari’s litter last August, I decided to try one last time for a litter with her. Not only because she makes some amazing puppies, but because Ari loves being a mama. With Gilly’s litter, she sleeps outside the door many days and often comes with me to supervise cleaning the whelping box or just socializing the babies, and her tail never stops wagging! I’ve never seen a mother dog be as attentive and loving as Ari is with her pups. All that being said, I’d be heartbroken if she has another false pregnancy, mostly for her sake. I may be projecting, but last time it seemed like she was sad or looking for her babies. So, this time if she’s shown to be false, we’ll be pursuing an orphan litter for her to care for. Because she produced milk and all the normal hormones last time, I feel like this may be a win-win situation in the case of another phantom pregnancy.

I’m genuinely unsure if she’s pregnant this time, and as many of you know, I do not allow for x-rays of pregnant mothers, so we’re flying blind here. She’s presenting all the normal symptoms, but she’s not as heavy as she should be if she’s carrying… by my calculations, she’s due around the 10th of March. That’s less than a month away, and traditionally she shows heavily. She not even as big as she was in August, but her belly is more firm.. You can even see in this picture that she doesn’t look to have the “baby bump” she typically has.

One way or another, Ari will mother one last litter to fulfill her heart! The puppies, orphaned or bio, will enter the training program as usual to give them the best shot at their most beautiful life with their families.

I’ll keep everyone updated!
