Educational post:
If you have purchased an axolotl from us, you have heard me share the importance of our seeded filter and watching/treating for nitrites. The reason it is so important is because the nitrites alter the hemoglobin and prevent the blood from absorbing oxygen. In this picture you can see the grey color in the veins of the axolotl. The deoxygenated blood causes this appearance and the blood remains that way regardless how much oxygen is in the water. If you discover nitrites in your tank let us know. We will help you get it corrected quickly while protecting the axolotl.

What does it mean when the axolotl stays at the top even when it swims down, and the tail floats back up?
This little guy has a gas bubble. Constipation is common in juvenile axolotls. When this happens it can sometimes last for several days. No need for fear. Don’t do any harsh treatments such as fridging. Make sure the water perimeters are good and the temp is not above 68 degrees. Then just give him time to p**p and all will be back to normal.

Are axolotls hard to take care of? No they are not, the key is knowing their unique needs. Start with a cycled tank, which we provide in our setup package. Feed once a day. Perform a 25% water change weekly. If you do this consistently you can enjoy many years with your pet axolotl. We carry everything in our store and will provide education and follow up advise.
