🐍 In the event your pooch does run into a snake this Spring, we stock antivenin at both STATVet locations (15th St in Midtown / 101st & Riverside).

Why should you stay on the designated trails? I’ll give you two reasons. See if you can spot them!
You’re WAY more likely to step on a 🐍 when you cannot see it. Plus off trail, you’re more likely to pick up ticks and poison Ivy. Stick to the trail y’all! Leave them be and they will leave you alone to.

⚕️ Sometimes goat kids need the ER, too! Johnny Cash is a young goat who presented to STATVet on Riverside with dog bite injuries this week. He was treated with pain control, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medications. His wounds were cleaned and bandaged, and he was discharged to home care with his family. Johnny was an excellent patient, and we wish him rapid and happy healing!

🐾 Xylitol poisoning can be life-threatening and requires immediate treatment by a veterinarian. Maddie is a 10 month old Pug who was seen by Dr. Cackler with concerns for xylitol ingestion.

🐾Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in chewing gum, sugar free peanut butter, candy, and toothpaste/mouthwash. It can cause a rapid and life-threatening drop in blood sugar within 20-30 minutes and severe liver injury in the days following. Even if vomiting is induced rapidly, low blood sugar can persist for 12-24hrs which is why close monitoring by a veterinarian is recommended.

🐾 Fortunately, Maddie's blood sugar never got too low and she was discharged to home care with her momma after a few hours.

🐾 Xylitol may also be called "birch sugar" or "birch bark extract" on ingredient labels. Pets should never be fed any sugar free products, and items containing large amounts of xylitol like gum should be kept securely out of reach. Accidents still happen in spite of our best efforts, though, which is why STATVet is prepared to care for your critters 7 days a week.

🐾 Can you guess what Dr. Toffoli removed from this gorgeous kitty's stomach? Gia is a 2 year old cat who was referred to STATVet Cherry Street for surgery after x-rays at her primary care veterinarian's office showed a large amount of foreign material in the GI tract. Gia came through the procedure with flying colors and was sent home to recover with her family that same evening. What do you think Dr. Toffoli found in her tummy? 🐾

🐾 This little sugar is Chomper, a 5 month old chihuahua who broke his tiny foot after falling from his mom's arms and landing on concrete. He was so sweet that he still wagged his tail saying hello to Dr. Cackler in spite of his pain. Chomper was patched up at STATVet on Cherry Street with a bright purple splint, excellent pain control, and a few kisses for good measure. Happy healing, 4 pound Chomper! 💜

🐾 Squeakers can be dangerous! Venom is a 6 month old Cane Corso puppy who was evaluated at STATVet on Cherry Street for several days of vomiting and poor appetite. When a parvo test was negative, x-rays were performed that showed foreign material present in the GI tract. Venom was a pretty sick guy, and even needed a section of his duodenum removed during surgery at STATVet. This is called a "resection and anastomosis", or R&A, and is only done when the bowel is ruptured or severely injured. The puppy had ingested the squeaker from a stuffed toy and the foreign body had ruptured through the intestinal wall. Fortunately, Venom recovered beautifully from surgery and is back to his energetic puppy self. 💜

🐾 Mama and baby make it home safely! Dr. Decker and 4th year OSU vet student, Shaelyn, recently delivered a large singleton puppy via C-section at STATVet on Cherry Street. Mom wasn't having success pushing out such a big kiddo, and an ultrasound exam revealed a low fetal heart rate indicating fetal distress. Fortunately, both Mom and little one did great after surgery and were discharged for recovery at home with their family. 🐾
