🐾 Oklahoma State University veterinary student, Casey, got to help Dr. Hough retrieve two socks from the stomach of Charlie, a 4 month old Basset Hound.
🐾 Charlie was referred to STATVet by her family veterinarian with concern that she might need surgery. They had attempted to retrieve the socks by inducing vomiting, but Charlie failed to bring up the foreign material.
🐾 Dr. Hough performed an abdominal ultrasound to ensure all fabric was confined to the stomach and had not moved downstream into the intestines (which would require surgery). Fortunately, Charlie was able to avoid surgery, and two socks were removed from the stomach using an endoscope.
🐾 Endoscopy is a painless and relatively non-invasive method of removing foreign bodies from the stomach before they cause bigger problems, requiring hospitalization or surgery. Endoscopy is generally faster, safer, and less expensive than surgery.
🐾 Charlie did wonderful during her visit, and was able to go home with her family the very same afternoon. No more sock eating for you, Miss Charlie! 🧦

🐾 Did you know we've added ✨️endoscopy✨️ at STATVet?🐾
🐾 This patient was referred to STATVet by her family veterinarian for removal of an esophageal foreign body. She'd swallowed the knobby end of a Nylabone whole and it lodged in her esophagus just above her heart.
🐾 Dr. Hough removed the Nylabone with the scope by passing a Foley catheter beyond it, inflating the balloon, and pulling everything out via the mouth. This kiddo did excellent and was able to go home the same afternoon.
🐾 Esophageal foreign bodies are incredibly dangerous and can lead to perforation of the esophagus. If not removed promptly, they can rapidly become life-threatening.
🐾 Endoscopy can also be used to remove foreign bodies from the airways or the stomach, to investigate ulcers in the stomach, or to biopsy the stomach, intestine, and colon in pets with gastrointestinal symptoms. It is minimally invasive, fast, and painless and helps to avoid surgery in many cases.
