We often advise clients that you should allow your dog to play off leash in places like daycare and dog parks to reduce outside influence on the dogs behavior. You will hear, "A tense leash makes for a tense and nervous dog, which can lead to miscommunication or even fights among atranger dogs." This is very true.
In this video, Trainer Ester goes over why she has one of her Boot Camps on a LONG LEASH in a controlled environment with dogs that are already familiar with each other. This technique and tool are being used to prevent the student from running away from the trainer when the dogs are being sent inside, and allows her to get hold of him if his playful behavior gets out of control. This dog is NOT aggressive, nor is he a danger to the other dogs or people. This is an exercise and practice for the sanctity of training, Ester's patience, and preventing her student from playing the dangerous game of "Catch me if you can!"
