Every day is an adventure when you’re a growing giraffe calf! 🦒 Since our calf’s birth, our hoofstock team has made an effort to make sure the calf can comfortably and safely navigate different areas of the Osage Casino & Hotel Giraffe Barn. Along the way, she’s also been getting plenty of attention from the rest of the herd! Watch as she explores her surroundings and even steps onto the scale within the green chute where we do regular weigh-ins to monitor her growth!
Preparing for a giraffe calf takes teamwork!🦒Before our newest calf was born, our hoofstock and veterinary teams took important steps to ensure the best care possible for Zoe and her calf during her pregnancy—including ultrasounds and plasma draws. Plasma can provide vital support to newborn calves if they don’t get enough antibody proteins from their mother in the first 72 hours after their birth. Both Zoe and one of our other females, Pili, donated plasma to help prepare for the calf’s arrival, but the calf had a normal birth and nursed immediately, so the plasma was not needed to boost her immune system’s protection.
Having plasma banked ahead of time gives our animal care and veterinary teams the tools they need if the calf needed support. Now that we don’t need it, this banked plasma could be utilized for giraffe calves in need at other zoological facilities through a national giraffe plasma bank program!
Training for any medical session takes a foundation of trust, time and teamwork. While blood and plasma draws are an important goal, our top priority is ensuring our animals feel safe and trust their care teams. Watch one of Zoe’s plasma draw sessions in action!
It’s that time of year again! 🐊☀️ Gus and Nellie, our American alligators, have emerged from their winter brumation and are back enjoying their outdoor habitat! Brumation is a hibernation-like state that cold-blooded animals, like alligators, enter during cooler months to conserve energy. Now that temperatures are warming up, Gus and Nellie are ready to bask in the sun. Be sure to stop by and see them during your next visit!
