It's fly season and one of the most common complaints we hear is "none of the fly spray works for more than a day " So rather than engage in the endless debate of which fly spray is best, we thought we'd address the application issue.
The most common application mistake is not applying enough product. Most products reccomend using 2 to 3 ounces per horse! How much is 2 ounces? Its probably more than you think - depending on the bottle/product, it could be 45 sprays (squeezes of the trigger)!
A good way to test is to take an old shot glass and count how many sprays (squeezing of the trigger) it takes to fill the glass - that's 2 ounces!
The second mistake we come across is method. Make sure to set the nozzle to spray or mist and not stream. (Streaming or squirting the product can be startling to the horse and will also leave an inconsistent protection barrier. )
Starting at the neck and moving along the horse's body, spray until the horse's hair is damp- NOT wet, just damp to the touch. Then spray the legs - be sure to spray the inside of the legs and belly too. (Avoid spraying the ge****ls and the horse's face. ) Now brush your horse . Yes, brushing the fly spray into the coat will maximize its effectiveness!
We didn't forget the face! Face application should be done with a clean dry cloth. Spray the cloth with some fly spray then gently wipe down the horse's face and ears, avoiding the eyelids and the nostrils. (You should never spray fly spray directly in a horse's face- not only is it unsettling for the horse, it's damaging to their eyes and mucus membranes)
Follow the re-application rates as listed on the bottle. As a reminder, fly spray should not be applied to a wet horse, it can cause skin irritations and itching.

As we head into summer, make sure your farm has a fire prevention and an evacuation strategy in place to keep both animals and people safe.
Did you know that animals will actually run INTO a burning building? In stressful situations, (like a fire or natural disaster,) horses will often run back into the "perceived" safety of their stall. Dogs and cats will often hide under a bed during a house fire. So we cannot expect them to rescue themselves.
We need a plan. A prevention plan AND an evacuation plan.

Thurston County Equine Outreach, your veterinarian and your local fire dept. can be great resources for developing a prevention and evacuation plan.
