Something to keep in mind when scheduling those fall vaccine appointments! 🐴

🚨 Heads up, competitors! Beginning Dec 1, 2025, every horse at USEF licensed & endorsed shows must have a verified microchip. Horses need a 15-digit ISO 11784/11785 chip in the nuchal ligament to stay show-ring legal for the 2026 season and beyond. Microchips add an additional level of safety and biosecurity for competition horses!

Check in with your veterinarian if you're unsure whether your horse already has a microchip. If your horse needs one to be show compliant in the coming year, placement is quick and easy, similar to a quick poke for a vaccine 🐴

Check out more details about the rule via US Equestrian: https://www.usef.org/compete/resources-forms/competition-management/competition-safety-biosecurity/microchipping?fbclid=IwY2xjawMlLkZleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFlclpxQzNsYWhNTTNyTEpkAR6LqOXOnwe6rOpMqQDBmK4jy2lq-dCwu5zQBEdophIfhGhRxMXNE8WXpVkDKA_aem_Div3d8Ic8MSK4JBvkoEtKw

Some good tips from our friends at Millbrook Equine! 🥵☀️🧊🐴💦

Heat wave's here! 🔥🌊☀️

Check out our team's recs to keep your horse cool & hydrated:

💧Provide access to plenty of clean water. Check water levels regularly as it's a good way to monitor water intake & refresh the water supply.

⛱Make sure horses in turnout have access to shade so they can escape the direct heat of the sun. Fly sheets with UV protection can provide some relief as well without adding any heat for the wearer

🧊Offer electrolytes or free-choice salt to encourage drinking. You can also soak your horse's normal feed ration to "force" some additional water intake.

💨Airflow is key for stabled horses. Open doors/ windows and utilize fans whenever possible, but be sure that wires are not causing additional hazards and that they cannot be reached by mouthy horses!

🐎Try to ride during the coolest hours of the day, early in the morning or late in the evening. If it's unavoidable, keep your mid-day rides short (about 20 minutes or so).

🧽Post-ride, help your horse cool down quickly by hosing his neck & chest first with cool water. Then hose the whole body, sweat scrape, and hose again. 👀 A recently published study found the quickest way to cool down a hot horse was continued application of cold water to the body for 2 continuous minutes 👀

⚠️Keep an eye out for symptoms of heat stress and contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice:
-Labored breathing or rapid respiratory rate
-Above normal temperature at rest
-Unusual sweating (too much or too little)
-Decreased appetite

🪲 The season of the TICKS 🤢

Equine Granulocytic Anaplasmosis is a common, seasonal, non-contagious tick transmitted disease which we have seen countless cases of this spring. No fun!

🦠 Anaplasmosis is a bacterial infection caused by the anaplasma bacteria transmitted by the Ixodes ticks (commonly known as the deer tick). These nasty ticks are also the ones who transmit Lyme disease.

What are the signs that your horse might have Anaplasmosis?

🌡️ FEVER! (>101.5F)
🦵Stocked up legs, reluctant to move
🤕 Lethargic, poor appetite, decreased manure/water intake and just not themself

What should you do?

1️⃣Take your horse’s temperature
2️⃣Call your vet❗️
3️⃣Put your horses wherever they will be happiest and you can monitor them

How do we diagnose and treat?

🩸In order to definitively diagnose Anaplasmosis either a PCR blood test or a fever of unknown origin panel is necessary.
💉There are many things that cause acute fever in horses ⬆️ but depending on the situation we may choose to treat empirically with tetracycline antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Rapid improvement is usually observed within 24-48hrs of starting treatment. Horses are expected to make a full recovery and have no long term complications.

How can you help prevent your horse from getting sick?

🤷‍♀️ The million dollar question!
Daily tick checks (remember in order for a tick to transmit the disease they must be engorged for over 24 hours), keeping pasture grass mowed and use of topical sprays is really the best we can do.

Dang ticks!

💥 Important prescription medication update!

We have received numerous requests this spring for Rx meds via third party online pharmacies (Chewy, Valley Vet, etc).
Our policy since opening has been that we do not work directly with outside pharmacies. We do not have the time nor the office staff to download/print/complete/upload forms, answer phone calls, etc.
By law the veterinarian-of-record must complete all these outside pharmacy requests (meaning our assistants cannot fill out the forms)…this gets very time consuming in a single-doctor practice!

So what are your options to purchase Rx medications?

🚛 Off the truck! We stock the vet truck as best we can and you may be able to get what you need directly from our office or truck

🛜 Directly from the online pharmacy associated with FEC.
Create an account, order your prescription, Dr.Sam approves it (no added paperwork on our end 😉) and it’s quickly shipped directly to you.

📝 Receive a handwritten prescription to use at the pharmacy of your choosing. These prescriptions must be requested at the time of your appointment or you must pick them up at our office (no, we will not mail these).

🐴 If none of the above options work and purchasing from an online outside pharmacy is the best option for you, we will assess a 💲30 administration fee to handle this request. Keep in mind it will often be challenging for us to process these prescription requests quickly and efficiently.

We hope these four options are helpful. We do our best to keep our online pharmacy prices competitive, we are consumers too, we understand! Please keep in mind: ✨📣 large corporate pharmacies can often SELL medication cheaper than we can BUY them from our suppliers 📣 ✨

Thank you for supporting our small business in all the ways you do! We are truly grateful 🌷

Pro tip: a great way to make your busy veterinarian’s life easier, shop from the FEC online pharmacy whenever you can! 🤓
