Most veterinary orthopedic surgeries are required to have six weeks of confinement during the postoperative period. It usually goes something like this…
Week 1 is stressful to the owner, but the patient is enjoying his naps and medication! The patient is wearing his collar at ALL times!!!!

Week 2 The patient is feeling a little better and is loving all the extra hugs! The end of week 2, is when staples can be removed, and therefore the e-collar!

Week 3 the patient begins to use the limb even more and is feeling more confident.

Week 4 becomes a little tricky as the patient fully believes he is healed and attempts escape from his confinement. (Resume sedatives!)

Week 5 The patient is feeling and looking even better. Many patients are walking better than before surgery.

Week 6 is recheck week, where x-rays will be taken of the surgery site and a new set of instructions will be given to ease back into normal life!

Meet Our Veterinarian! 😷
Dr. George Edwards is a residency-trained small animal veterinary surgeon, practice limited to veterinary surgery. He received 8 years of training and has 12 years of specialty private practice experience. 🐾
😷 “Dr. George” performs both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, but he most enjoys fracture repair and ACL (CCL) surgeries, such as the TPLO procedure.
😷 When asked what he loves most about his job, his reply was, “I love taking complex orthopedic problems into the operating room, methodically repairing the injury and seeing the patient a few weeks later looking and feeling better than they were before surgery. Pets hold a special place in our hearts. They are family members. It is an honor to help each and every animal who comes to us for surgery.” 🐾

It’s TPLO Tuesday! Today we would like to take a minute to explain what exactly the TPLO surgery involves. TPLO stands for Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy and is a surgical method commonly used to stabilize the stifle (knee) when the CCL (ACL in humans) is torn. The “Tibial Plateau” is the top portion of the tibia bone. This section is cut with a bone saw, then rotated to prevent excessive movement from the torn ligament. The new position of the bone is held in place by implanting a special bone plate and screws. The cut section of bone takes about 6-8 weeks to heal. During that time, it is important to have the patient rest and stay as inactive as possible, to reduce the risk of the bone plate or screws breaking. The TPLO surgery is one of a handful of types of CCL repair, but is the most common stabilization. This surgery typically results in faster recovery times and most dogs resume a very active lifestyle with no complication. The following is a video diagram of a torn CCL (ACL) and how the TPLO surgery is preformed to stabilize the joint.

Magnolia Veterinary Surgery also has a mobile component to our service. We are usually able to schedule surgeries to the Jackson, MS or Memphis, TN areas on most Fridays. We are happy to provide this mobile service to those that may not otherwise be able to travel.
