Popeye fans! Pops is available for adoption to people who have followed his story and know his history. You know our boy Pops, he's just as likely to eat a potential adopter as he is willing to let them pet him. Lol. With Cooper in a new home, it’s time turn my attention to everyone’s favorite monster project. It’s Popeye’s turn. Due to his history, I am a bit leery of putting Pops on the open market, so until he finally settles into domestication, Pops will only be offered to the people who know him and have been following his story. He’s had some time off so I could work with Coop, but he knows he’s going back to work. He’s doing better than he has in the past, at least in the sense that I can say “no” to him without fear of retaliation, that’s a pretty big step, Lol! I’ll be spending the next month or so working on his blond side to see if I can get his brain balanced out. His blind side is still kinda mean to me. We’ll see how it goes!

Cooper was restarted on obstacles today. I'm not sure you could consider this going OVER the barrel, but hey, you gotta reward the slightest try ;) YAY COOPER!

Cooper hasn't gained much weight since last month, I had to take him off of grain since it was making him anxious. But the expression on his face is Priceless! What a change in our young man, he is slowly letting go of his fears and starting to finally feel safe! He is back on a mild complete feed, and has grown in a new shiny coat!

It is the end of our third year at Forest Trails and I have decided not to continue. FTHR is closing its doors to horses and horse owners in need. To some of you, this will come as no surprise; it is something that I have been thinking about for well over a year. Last January, I started Worthy Trails Horsemanship, a for profit LLC training business to celebrate my own personal herd who are very important to me. Unfortunately, the drama of unwanted horses has left me with very little time to focus on my own horses so I have decided to make time for them by eliminating FTHR. Ownership of the last two remaining horses of FTHR, Pops and Cooper, has been transferred to Worthy Trails and they are available for free to good and qualified homes. They are in no danger of being homeless, so please don’t come knocking on my door expecting to pick up a free horse you can’t handle, they are not pets! But for anyone who is interested in these two, or any of our other horses for sale, please join our new page to learn more about them and follow their progress! https://www.facebook.com/WorthyTrailsHorsemanship

Oh boy, what should I say about Pops! Lol. He has been a difficult horse but the last few months he has made a few big changes. When I got Pops in 2010, he came to me a feral stallion. He was aggressive and problematic. He is blind in one eye due to having been kicked by an adult stallion when he was a weanling, and having been gelded late in life, he still behaves like a stallion when with other horses. Pops has had extensive groundwork done which has made him much easier to manage, but he still needs to be handled with care. He reverts to feral stallion when not handled on a regular basis. Currently he is enjoying stalled domestic life which has made him behave more like a nice unbroken gelding. He has been backed but not yet ridden, he ground drives and handles obstacles like a pro. While he is looking for a home, he is still very important to me and will only go to a home that will understand his issues.

Our mustang Cooper is making amazing progress! He is still a bit jumpy, but he settles much better now. He allows his front feet to be handled, I am working on his backs but he kicks out quite a bit. He is comfortable being lunged and is learning his gaits. He is still nervous when I groom him, but he understands he won’t be pushed to hard. His biggest difficulty right now is standing tied, it makes him very nervous to have someone standing behind him. But he can be caught in the arena, he will walk right up to me! Cooper is available for free to a qualified home.

In 2009, I met Heather and her family; I had moved in next door and spent the majority of my time over at their house. They were very much interested in my horses and eventually; my farrier at the time had a PMU mare that had found herself homeless. She brought the horse to me and I placed her with Heather. Jill wasn’t Heather’s first horse, but was the first one she had in quite a few years. Heather and I went trail riding and eventually, her oldest daughter Rose wanted her own horse too. So off to the Woodburn Livestock auction we went. There we found Tink, and older Arabian mare, stiff in her knee and white hairs around her face where her halter had once grown into her face. For $60 Heather rescued the little mare and she has been Rose’s partner ever since. So of course Rose’s little sister, Jenika, wanted to join in the fun. Forest Trails had taken in a big paint horse who had been living on 100 acres. When the property sold and was scheduled for development, Bubba lost his home. His foster home brought him to us for placement. He was so sweet I called Heather to bring her kids over to see if he was kid safe, she adopted him the same day. So here they are, a family in need of horses, and horses in need of a family. Just makes it all worthwhile, doesn’t it?

Cooper is making some progress! He is still having a hard time getting over his fears but he is working hard at developing his “try”. He has learned that he will get rewarded when he relaxes, so I have modified the clicker training to fit him. He is able to be lunged at a walk or a jog and when he gets to scared I can say his name and he remembers that he is ok. Today he was able to be caught in the arena, he actually took several steps towards me all by himself! So we will be building on that this week. If you would like to help our guy Cooper, please send more treats. Lol. Right now horse cookies are his biggest expense and I don’t want to run out! Our address is 12145 Summit Lane SE Turner OR 97392. Cooper isn’t picky about what he gets, any treats will do!
