UPDATE! Niko's handler arrived, with the publics help, we knew about where Niko was. The moment Niko saw his handler he obeyed his commands and returned unharmed! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. We can all sleep better tonight.
Earlier today, Thursday 05/19/2022, approximately 9:30am while being professionally kenneled in Gill Massachusetts, our beloved K9 Niko was able to scale two 6' high fences and fled into the woods. Niko was being watched while his handler was out of town on vacation. It is well within policy and customary for police k9's to be kenneled while the handler is out of town.
Nearly a dozen K9 handlers from all over western Massachusetts assisted officers from Greenfield, Gill , Northfield, Environmental Police, Massachusetts State Police and members of the Franklin County Sheriffs Department in attempt to find and secure the Niko. Many residents of Gill also assisted us in the search. We were able to locate the dog four separate times, the latest near Kuzmeskus Bus company, but the dog, not being comfortable with anyone but his handler kept running away. There is such a strong bond between K9's and their handlers that we believe the dog is searching for his handler and is evading capture on purpose. We have suspended the active search for Niko as we don't want to further exhaust the dog, or create an opportunity for him to fearfully run into the street. His handler made arrangements for an emergency flight back home in order to assist searching for Niko and will be back in the area later tonight. We truly believe as soon as his hander calls for him, he will return.
The residents of Gill were notified through reverse 911 that if they see Niko to not approach or try to contain the dog, this will only make him run and hide more. Instead, please call the Gill Police Department who will further assist us in knowing the approximately whereabouts. Our department will respond with K9 cruiser, a place he loves and feels comfortable in, to see if he will load himself. Knowing his location will also make it easier for his handler to find him. Niko is highly trained we do not believe he is dangerous to people unless he is frightened, cornered or injured. Once again, do not approach him, but please call.
Please share out prayers for the safe and prompt return of our fellow K9 partner.
