Moxibustion! This is a technique that applies heat therapy on or over a acupoint or an affected area. Mugwort or Artemsia argyi is the main ingredient used for moxibustion.

With the cold long winter we have had, this technique helps to warm, enhance cell-mediated and humoral immunity, and strengthen the body’s resistance to pathogens. Moxibustion is also used for arthritis, pain, gastrointestinal disease, heart failure, infertility, brain-injury and dementia, and for overall quality of life

Yes!! Joint injections have a place but are often the first thing done today without a diagnosis.

As Dr Jean Marie Denoix said, “I think we have to do something else besides injecting joints. I’m quite tired of seeing horses that have been injected in the fetlock, hock, stifle and were not improved and are now coming to see me. We have to change our approach to first make a diagnosis rather that just injecting. Then when a diagnosis is reached treat appropriately.”

Your horse’s piaffes have pfizzled. His slides have slid. His rollbacks have rolled back. His leads aren’t changing. Almost reflexively, someone will say, “Maybe he needs his hocks injected.” Maybe he does. But maybe it’s a lot more complicated than that. At least it should be. FIRST ASIDE...

By using my TCVM acupuncture scan on performance horses, I can find areas of soreness and address them with acupuncture and spinal manipulation. With many of my race horse clients we do twice monthly exams and treatments. I sometimes do additional diagnostics which includes thermal imaging and TendiBoots. The Tendiboots measure how evenly a horse is landing and how much time each leg stays on the ground. By using all of the above routinely on horses, I have been able to detect subtle changes and address those before the horse has changes in performance.

Example case: 4 year old race horse clinically sound. This horse was reactive on left front foot on the acupuncture scan. The Tendiboots were placed in him which showed unequal loading, with more load on the right front. The thermal imager also showed unequal loading and increased heat in the left front. The horse was radiographed which showed nothing abnormal. Acupuncture was performed and slight changes in shoeing. The repeat exam was normal in 24 hours for the acupuncture scan, Tendiboots, and thermal scan. This was detected before the horse demonstrated a change in performance. He went on the run third in a Grade 3 stakes race! Focusing on prevention with full exams when horses are in training is key to keep these horses performing at their best!

Adding another certification to my toolbox. This time in Veterinary Medical Manipulation, commonly called chiropractic. Veterinary Medical Manipultors bring many benefits to the table when working on your horse, including an understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and disease processes. The whole picture allows the veterinarian to work with you and your horse to develop the appropriate treatment plan to keep your horse happy, healthy, and sound!

Love this class 4 laser from Pegasus. This laser can deliver up to 15 watts of power and has two different wavelengths to ensure treatment is delivered when lots of melanin is present in the skin and hair. Many laser systems don’t have enough watts or correct wavelengths to deliver a therapeutic dose to patients.
