I started my first Paw Spa in Thunder Bay in 1995, groomed at a veterinary clinic in Wisconsin for 2 years before starting a Paw Spa there in 2010. Now I am starting again in Two Harbors, MN. I offer a clean, friendly home atmosphere that I hope will put you and your pet at ease. Dogs are groomed one at a time, not stored in cages (unless they are brought in one from home), equipment is cleaned and disinfected between dogs.
A friendly reminder that we do offer reminders via Facebook or text. Unfortunately, in the last week alone, no shows have cost me over $300. HERE’S WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO ADD FRESH “HUMAN FOOD” TO YOUR PET’S KIBBLE
Today, ninety-six percent of pet owners around the globe are feeding dry commercial pet foods. Of those 96%, there is a large majority that believes dried commercial pet food is really all their pet needs and would never stop to consider the benefits of adding fresh “human food”.
(“Human food” definition in this article: clean sources of meat-based proteins and some organic plant matter, not beer and nachos 😉)
There are many reasons why some of these pet parents feel this way, however the most popular reason today seems to be the 50-year-old rumor that is in existence and still spreading.
You know the one: “Giving your animal table scraps is bad!”
How or when did this terrible rumor start?
Well, if we go back in time, research shows that shortly after the invention of processed pet foods, manufacturers were having a hard time convincing pet parents to make the switch from foods in their refrigerators to their commercial pet foods.
So in 1964, the pet food industry, along with the PFI, joined together with a whole bunch of marketing dollars and launched one of the most influential campaigns the pet world had ever seen: the “Ban All Table Scraps from your Pets’ Bowls” campaign!
Through thousands of newspapers, magazines, and news stations, the public was warned about the dangers of table food scraps or “human food” and the importance of feeding “processed” commercial pet food. From there, the giant smear campaign took off!
Not only did this clever campaign work, but it was so impactful that now, 50 years later, folks are still in fear of offering anything that is not labeled pet food.
SO IS IT A GOOD THING TO ONLY OFFER YOUR PET DRIED KIBBLE?
Not according to ongoing research it isn’t, especially with today’s cancer rates being 1 in 2 dogs!
In a 2005 study conducted at Purdue University on Scottish Terriers, the results showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of transitional cell carcinoma (aka bladder cancer)!
In the study, dogs ate a diet of dry commercial pet food, while some got an assortment of vegetables added to the mix at least 3 times per week.
When the study was concluded, according to the researchers, they weren’t really shocked by the results.
Here’s what they found:
Dogs that ate any green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, had reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer by 90% and the dogs that consumed any yellow – orange vegetables like carrots reduced the risk by 70%!
Seriously! A lousy carrot helped smash the potential of cancer.

Yes, of course cats are obligate carnivores (must have meat to survive) and our dogs are facultative carnivores (carnivores with omnivorous potential if circumstances demand) so offering clean meat-based protein sources should always be top priority and essential.
However, because today’s world is ever-so changing due to factory farmed livestock being fed genetically modified grains and our planet being contaminated with every type of pesticide, fungicide and larvicide, the importance of fresh, organic plant matter to help detox the body couldn’t be more crucial.
So if the “cancer reducing benefit” doesn’t tickle your fancy enough to convince you to add any “human fresh foods” to your pet’s bowl, then maybe think of it this way:
How bad would it suck if someone forced you to eat dry processed foods your whole lIfe?!

Choo Choo has been adopted!!
Remember the cute little Pekingese we posted about last week? Well, he was never claimed by anyone so “Choo Choo” is officially up for adoption!
Choo Choo was found on some railroad tracks in Brimson. Luckily the train conductor spotted him and was able to stop the train before Choo Choo was hit. Choo Choo was hungry, full of matts/sticks, cold and tired.
After 5 baths and a good body shave from our favorite groomer Laura(Paw Spa), he is looking as cute as ever!! The vet is guessing his age is roughly 8-10 years old and he has a little vision and hearing loss. He also has a dry eye condition and will need eye drops for the rest of his life. Also, he will need a good dental cleaning, which is very common in little dogs. Because of this we are waving his adoption fee so we can find someone who will take care of him properly for the rest of his life.😊
Choo Choo will make a excellent lap dog for someone!

Please pull up as pictured for your appointment. I will come through the garage to bring your pet inside. Having a dog get loose is a big concern of mine (from experience), so please make sure your pets collar and leash is snug...I will be removing it immediately for grooming anyway. 😊 I will be making every effort for health, safety and sanitation as we go.

Covid 19 update. It looks like with the extension of the shelter in place order I will remain closed until May 4. I will be contacting anyone scheduled in April to reschedule shortly, any new appointments will be scheduled after I have contacted everyone. I sure miss all my furry friends, I pray you are all well, and that I will see you all after this is over ❤️
Dear clients: At this point, I really feel I need to shut down until Covid-19 slows down. Honestly, as a non-essential business I know that I will likely be forced to suspend operation at any moment. I really care about each one of you, and your pets. I'll be making up a client list of people to call when I know it's safe to start grooming again. Likely about the same time restaurants and hair salons are back in operation. Stay healthy, see you after isolation :D
It should go without saying, but if you are not feeling well, please call and cancel and/or reschedule your pets appointment. I always have a cancellation list, so don't feel bad, even if it's short notice. That goes for your pet too. Health and well being are a much bigger priority 😊 Stay healthy, and give your dog extra hugs 🤗
This time of year, I get a lot of people wondering why their pets nails seem to be growing so fast. The problem is, they don't wear down so well in the snow. Normally, they should be trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks, which is more frequent than I see them for haircuts. This time of year, and as they get older, and not running around as much, they may need to be done more often than that. I do offer simple nail trims for in between, also, the vet usually offers this service as well for those that don't want to try at home. A simple nail file will help much if done weekly also.....and the nails won't be as sharp as a bonus! 😊

I am so excited to see this happening in Two Harbors! This is a great way to socialize your pup and have him/her prepared for grooming, veterinary care, travelling, etc.. We can't always forsee what our pets will experience throughout their lives, but building a training foundation like this helps give them the skills they will need 😁😁

If your pet is experiencing any coughing symptoms, please cancel your appointment until cleared by a veterinarian. Kennel cough is airborne, it is highly contagious, and it has an incubation period of about 2 weeks, your dog does not have to be at a kennel to pick it up. Grooming is important, but the health and safety of canine clients is top priority 🙂
