Ash from wildfires is made up of organic matter, consisting of the basic nutrients that plants require. Plants absorb the ash and it’s actually a great source of fertilizer. Although the air quality is poor in Mendocino County right now, our gardens are going to love the additional nutrients.

While thunder and lightning can be scary during fire season, thunderstorms are a gardener’s friend.

About 80% of our atmosphere is nitrogen. Nitrogen which the atmosphere isn’t available for plants to absorb; however, the energy caused by lightning converts it into a form that can be absorbed by plants. The science behind the transformation is a conversion of atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen into nitric oxide (NO), which then oxides into nitrogen dioxide (NO2), then into nitric acid (HNO3) which can then be deposited onto the earth’s surface through rains. Lightning and thunderstorms can provide gardens with lots of nitrogen that encourage growth in plants.

Making carrot cake today🥕 This is the one I have been making lately.

Flourless Carrot Cake

1 1/2 cups (1/2 pound) unsalted toasted almonds
1/4 cup raw brown (turbinado) sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
4 large eggs
1/3 cup organic white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups finely grated carrots (about 10 ounces)

Step 1
Heat the oven to 350 degrees with a rack in the middle. Oil a 9-inch springform pan, and line it with parchment. Lightly oil the parchment.

Step 2
Combine the almonds and the turbinado sugar in a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Blend until the almonds are finely ground. Add the baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon zest, and pulse together.

Step 3
Beat the eggs until thick in the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, or with an electric be**er. Add the organic sugar, and continue to beat until the mixture is thick and forms a ribbon when lifted from the bowl with a spatula. Beat in the vanilla. Add the almond mixture and the carrots in three alternating additions, and slowly beat or fold in each time.

Step 4
Scrape the batter into the prepared cake pan. Place in the oven, and bake one hour until firm to the touch and beginning to pull away from the pan. A toothpick inserted into the center of the cake should come out clean. Remove from the heat, and allow to cool on a rack for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of the pan, and carefully remove the spring form ring. Allow the cake to cool completely, then wrap tightly in plastic.

Our garlic is finally starting to form! Here’s some green garlic from a recent harvest. Green garlic is a young garlic with tender leaves harvested early in the season before the bulb is fully formed. It has a mild garlic taste with a texture that is more like an onion.

Our Story

Located in Mendocino County Backyard Farm is here to help you expand free yard space into a sustainable organic backyard farm. The mission is to grow local food and feed people. Foodscaping, sometimes called edible landscaping, front yard farming, or urban farming is a type of landscaping in which all or major areas of a lawn on private property or sometimes public property are used to grow food.

Backyard Farm is a DBA (doing business as) of Veikko Properties LLC which was established in 2015. It’s about more than gardening and harvesting, it’s about community and networking backyard farmers with people in need of fresh produce and fruits that would otherwise go wasted.

As this program establishes itself, it will grow its volumes of food supplied, and work on helping local community members eat fresh vegetables and fruits. Excess crops given to Backyard Farm will in return be taken and given to local food shelters and community centers.

Call today for pricing and a free yard consultation. Eat local, buy local, grow local!
