As climate change impacts our majestic Fir grove, we’re taking steps to make sure Dark Horse keeps the same vibe for generations to come. In the last two days, we’ve made great strides planting over 50 new trees—including Redwoods, Red Oaks, Maples, Dogwoods, Hopseed Bushes and Chinese Pistache. We have also planted a new fruit orchard and spread native wildflower seeds across the property. We’re committed to preserving the beauty and feel of Dark Horse that we all love so much. 🍃🪻🌳🌼🌳🌲

✨ Meet Ruthie King, the incredible shepherd behind the scenes at Dark Horse! 🐑 From the very first encounter, where she effortlessly wrangled a feisty ram during shearing, to now overseeing the winter grazing of her flock at our ranch, Ruthie’s dedication is truly inspiring.
🌱 Ruthie’s flock has become a welcome seasonal addition to Dark Horse. Over the past three winters, she, along with the help of Alexander Decater, Kelli, and their daughter Celeste, has orchestrated a beautiful dance of moving the sheep, guardian dog(s), and solar- powered fencing to new areas—creating a feast for the sheep and nurturing the land.
🌾 As owner/ operator of Headwaters Grazing, Ruthie’s stewardship is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between animals and the earth. Her calm passion for her 77 sheep, each known by name or number, is evident in every move she makes. We’re grateful for her eagerness to share this beautiful connection and contribute to the vitality of Dark Horse.

For the last five years, Olan & Lia Cox have been devoted stewards of Dark Horse. With their loving presence and infectious energy, they breathed life into the property. Olan’s huge garden not only fed us but painted a vibrant picture of future possibilities. They have loved and supported the Dark Horse humans & beasts alike. Alongside their talented Mendoughs team, Olan & Lia have shared their amazing talents and hospitality creating incredible meals sourced from as much as Dark Horse had to offer, for every memorable Dolan Family gathering.
Recently, they have been feverishly breathing life into their new homestead in Willits and will soon move-in with a big floof of a roommate from Dark Horse. Marco is the luckiest boy to be able to spend his retirement life with them.
We are ever grateful to have Olan & Lia in our lives.
