We currently have three lesson spots open! We cater to beginners through advanced riders who would like to focus on developing their skills as horse people and not just riders. We focus on teaching from dressage foundations for balanced and quiet riding. We teach horsemanship from a soft but clear approach in order to establish a balanced relationship between horse and rider.

3:15/3:30 on Tuesdays
4:45 on Fridays

Please reach out via email if you are interested in lessons. We also offer week day morning lessons on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

I currently have a few beginner to advanced beginner lesson spots open. The current availability is every other Thursday at 4:30, every other Friday at 5:45 and every Saturday at 10. We have great medium sized ponies to teach your little ones on. We strive to create all around horse people in a positive low pressure environment with lots of fun! Impulsion Riding School has one stall available starting December 1st for a well behaved gelding or mare that is interested in being used lightly in a small beginner to intermediate dressage focused lesson program in exchange for reduced board. Full board includes:
Hay 2-4 times per day
Triple Crown grain 2 times per day
Blanket changes within reason
Option for group or private turn out weather dependent
Stalled at night
Outdoor arena
Indoor arena attached to barn
Access to clean fresh water 24/7
Heated tackroom & bathroom!
Dry lot available if necessary

Horse must be respectful of electric fencing. We are open to any farrier and vets.

Does your horse look outwards and forwards when you ride, or does he look downwards?

The physical and mental welfare of a horse suffers when he is ridden with his neck too round (hyperflexed), with the nasal plane behind a vertical line to the ground ('behind the vertical' or 'behind the bit') - as in the left photo.

Research shows that horses ridden in hyperflexion have restricted breathing and vision. A horse at liberty would never carry himself in this way for more than a very brief period.

Reasons for horses being ‘behind the vertical’ could include bad training, heavy hands, restrictive gear such as a standing martingale or side reins, the horse avoiding contact or the rider thinking it looks good.

The experts say the horse when working should ideally have his head slightly in front of the vertical, fairly close to a straight line perpendicular to the ground, and the poll should be the highest point, as in the second photo. This horse is looking outwards and forwards.
When you next ride, make sure that your horse is not looking downwards. If he is, allow or encourage him to look outwards and forwards!

Did you know?
- If your horse approaches a jump or mounted games barrel with his head pulled to the outside, or tucked near his chest for example, his vision is greatly restricted.
- Horses have a natural preference to look closely at things on their left side, which has probably helped horsemanship develop mounting, leading, bridling etc from the near (left) side.

We hosted Jennifer Mitchell this weekend for a rider’s biomechanics clinic. It was a great educational experience with homework for everyone! We put a lot of time into making sure our horses feel good but we need to take care of ourselves too. Better yourself to better your horse!

Returning home from a great weekend in Vermont working with some fabulous horse and rider combinations on rider symmetry and biomechanics. Thank you to riders, coaches, and hosts♥️.
