It's National Pet Dental Health Month!

Don't forget about your pet's dental health! Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets. Without proper preventive or home care, plaque and tartar can build up, which may cause oral infections, bad breath, infected gum tissues (gingivitis) or even bone loss (periodontitis). Brush your pet's teeth regularly if possible or use dental treats.

Happy Halloween!
Halloween is a fun and spooky time, but can be stressful for your pets. Make sure to keep your furry family members safe during this time.

1. Make sure to store the Halloween candy away from your pets.
Popular Halloween candies are toxic to pets (chocolate, sugar-free candies containing xylitol are a few examples). If you suspect your pet ingested something toxic, call your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

2. Be careful with costumes.
Not all pets love being in costume and can become stressed from wearing one. If you decide to dress up your pet, make sure the costume does not limit: movement, sight, breathing, bark or meowing. Check that the costume does not have choking hazards (dangly pieces that can be chewed off). If your pet looks uncomfortable, take off the costume.

3. Try to keep your pets calm and comfortable
Strangers at the door may be stressful for some pets. Make sure your pet isn't able to slip out the door. You may have to keep your pets in a separate room during peak trick-or-treat hours. If going out to trick-or-treat, leave your pets at home. You wouldn't want to lose your pet if he or she gets spooked from a costume or risk your pet biting someone.

4. Take caution with decorations
Decorations such as pumpkins are generally harmless. However, a lit jack-o-lantern can easily be knocked over and start a fire. Other decorations such as cobwebs or string can become a choking hazard. Take caution when decorating the home. Playful and curious pets can become entangled or try to eat decorations.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween!

It's National Pet Obesity Awareness Day!
We all love our pets no matter their shape and size. But when you notice your pet getting a little plump, you know it's time for a few changes. It's hard to say no to those cute faces when it comes to food, but it's important to practice discipline for the safety and well-being of our beloved pets.

Pet obesity can lead to serious health issues for these animals including diabetes, arthritis, decreased life expectancy, high blood pressure and cancer.

Pet weight is harder to lose and takes time. To give our pets the best life possible, we have to help them avoid packing a few extra pounds. Your vet is a great resource for helping you create a plan for your pet and can give you the best advice for your pet to lose weight in a healthy way. Monitor calorie intake for your pet, along with giving healthy treats to help with weight loss. Make sure to stay consistent! Along with diet, play with your pet. Some exercise is better than no exercise.

Today is , and we’ve got some fire safety tips for you:

- Never leave candles burning when your pet is left unattended
- Don’t keep glass water bowls on wooden decks (they can heat up and ignite)
- Consider using monitored smoke detectors for an extra layer of protection
- Leave new puppies in a secure crate or gated area when home alone
- Don’t let your dog get into the habit of chewing electrical cords
- If you have a pup who likes to lean on counters, you may want to buy some stove k**b covers for peace of mind when you’re out and about

Every year, over 500,000 pets are affected by housefires and at least 1,000 of them are started by pets themselves. Taking simple precautions can save both your life and theirs.

Summer is around the corner and now is a perfect time to go over how you can have as much fun as possible while making sure your furry friend remains happy, healthy, and comfortable.

Here are some Summer Safety Tips:
1. Don't leave your pet in the car. -- Even if it's "just for a few minutes" or even if you leave the window cracked.

2. Know the signs of overheating/dehydration. -- Pets become more susceptible to overheating and dehydration when they're outside in the sun or being active in the summer months. Pets with "flat" faces like Pugs and Persian cats, need to be watched closely because they can quickly develop difficulty breathing.
*Signs to watch out for include excessive panting, hyperventilation, increased salivation, rapid pulse, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness.

3. Practice caution on the water. -- If your dog loves kayaking, canoeing, or jumping off docks, you’re likely pretty confident in their swimming skills. You may be confident in your dog's doggy paddle, but we encourage you to put a life jacket on your furry friend, just in case. Similarly, knowing pet CPR is helpful for any pet owner, especially those whose dogs spend a lot of time in the water.

4. Keep an eye on the temperature. -- Most dogs love walks, and as the weather warms up, your pup will be getting more time outside. Keep in mind asphalt heats up quickly and can burn your pet's paw pads. You can put some dog boots on your dog's paws to protect his or her paw pads. To check the temperature, hold the back of your hand to the pavement for seven seconds. If it's too hot, stay home.
