Havna Rabbit Facts

Havana rabbit is a very beautiful breed with it’s soft, shiny and rich colored fur coat. The breed is not from Cuba as you might expect from their name. Rather they originated in Netherlands in 1898. The Havana rabbit breed get it’s name from the fact that the chocolate variety closely resembles the color of the deep brown Havana ci**rs from Cuba. It is said that ‘the Havana rabbit is the result of a litter born to two non-pedigree rabbits’. Color of some of the rabbits in this litter were a rich dark brown which was very unusual at the time. Then those kits were crossed with Himalayans and the resulting offspring was crossed back with the original brown buck.

The Havana is a very beautiful medium sized rabbit breed. The breed has short and round bodies. The ears of the Havana rabbit are short, relatively close together and upright.

The Havana rabbit is very good and popular as show animal. They are also good as pets, but not recommended for the very small children.

Havanas are known to be one of the most calmest breeds of rabbit. They make ideal pets. But are not recommended for very small children unless they are closely supervised. Havana rabbits are very affectionate and attention seeking. They are also known for having relaxed and friendly personality. They are lively and attentive without being nervous. Although some Havanas are semi-aggressive. So it’s important to know the temperament of the parents before buying your Havana. Average lifespan of the Havana rabbit is about 7 to 10 years and sometimes more if properly cared and if kept in captivity. Review full breed profile of the Havana rabbit in the chart below.

Weight Average body weight is between 2 and 2.9 kg
Color Varieties Black, Blue, Broken and Chocolate

Lionhead Rabbit Facts

The Lionhead is one of the more recent breeds of domestic rabbit to be kept as pets. The name ‘Lionhead’ was attached to the breed because they have long fur around their faces that resemble a lion’s mane.
The breed is believed to have originated in Belgium.
The breed was believed to have been bred by accident at first, but due to their cute appearance they were then bred.
The Lionhead only weighs around 2-3 lbs when fully grown.
Their ears are much shorter than most rabbit breeds at 2-3”.
Their fur is longer on their chest and cheeks.
The long fur feels very different to a typical dense rabbit coat.
They enjoy human company and being handled.
Despite their fluffy appearance they don’t require much grooming as their fur is not very dense.
They have strong maternal instincts and are easy to breed.
They have a life expectancy between 8-10 years.

All about my favorite breed. The Mini Rex

You can’t talk about the Mini Rex rabbit without mentioning the glorious, plush fur of the breed. Shared only with the Rex rabbit, touching either breed is an experience you won’t forget. Mini Rex are a smaller breed. They usually weigh in around 4.5 pounds. The fur and small size might be reasons why Mini Rex are popular. They are one of the breeds developed in the United States and gained recognition in 1988, which is somewhat recently compared to most of the other rabbit breeds.

It’s all about the fur with either the Mini Rex or standard Rex rabbit breeds. Why? Because it’s so plush and velvety to touch. The fur stands upright. The guard hairs and undercoat are the same length. It’s truly unique fur. Once you touch it, you never forget it. The breed standard for Mini Rex specifies that it has a compact, balanced, smooth body. The ears are upright and close together. The ideal for shoulders, midsection, and hindquarters calls for them to be firm and well-filled.another wonderful fact about Mini Rex is that they come in a wide variety of colors — nearly 20! The American Rabbit Breeders Association-recognized colors include black, blue, blue-eyed white, broken group, castor, chinchilla, chocolate, Himalayan, lilac, lynx, opal, otter, red, sable point, seal, silver marten, smoke pearl, tortoise, and white. Add in the several colors from the broken group, and there are more than 20 to choose from.
Mini Rex are considered a friendly breed, although the degree of friendliness varies by individual.

6 Tips for Beginning a Rabbitry

Beginning a rabbitry or rabbit breeding program is a fascinating and fun hobby.
Tip #1: Don’t get in over your head

Start small, pick one breed and only a couple varieties (coat colors) when beginning your rabbitry.Stick to one breed to start with. There are many nuances to evaluating good body type and it is more difficult to learn when there are many different breeds at once.
Especially if showing, learn how coat colors are supposed to look, get feedback from judges, and be sure the colors you have are good before moving on to even more. Know what varieties will and will not be showable for your breed, if you intend on showing.Understand how the varieties interact when bred together- yes, learn some genetics and Punnett squares! Some colors breed well together, like blue and black, but some will create colors that are unrecognized for the breed.

Tip #2: Get quality stock, don’t buy discount rabbits!

This is the single biggest tip I can offer for beginning a rabbitry.
Expect prices to be at least $20 per rabbit (if you find a generous breeder). Don’t be surprised if good show stock runs $40 and up per animal, with the rare breeds costing much more.

Tip #3: Know your local market before beginning a rabbitry.

Are people looking for meat rabbits and breeding stock, or is there a big 4-H culture that might be looking for more pet-sized animals with gentle temperaments?
Choose a breed (or crosses) that have value so your barn doesn’t get too full. There is a reason people say “breeding like rabbits”! Along those lines, have plans for your culls (the rabbits that aren’t good for your breeding purposes).

Tip # 4: Have a goal when beginning a rabbitry.

Whether it is gold-star temperaments, the best rate of gain, or prize winners on the show tables, have a goal in mind. Don’t just breed willy-nilly.
If you want to produce great pet rabbits, make sure you have the time to handle them daily and tame them.
If you want to produce the best show animals, cull heavily and only keep the best animal out of each litter, if any.
For meat breeding, keep track of kits’ growth and feed consumption rates and keep only those that put on weight the most quickly and efficiently.

Tip #5: Never be content with a promised pedigree

While most breeders are kind and well-meaning, some get very busy and will forget to provide you with the pedigree later on.
Or they might forget who they sold you and not provide the correct pedigree at all!
By reviewing the pedigree before you leave the breeder, you can ask questions, as well as check for suspicious entries.
Remember, some varieties do not breed well with others?

Tip #6: Join ARBA and go to shows!

As you’re beginning your rabbitry, the best way to find good stock and gain knowledge is to learn from people who do well at shows.
Perhaps not as important with the meat or pet breeding, but if you are trying to sell show stock, having good comments from judges or even wins at shows will help make the rabbits you produce more valuable to other breeders.
Even if your rabbit doesn’t win on the tables, if you listen to the judge they will explain why they didn’t make the cut and you can focus on those aspects as you continue your breeding.

BUNNY EBOLA

Bunny Ebola” is rapidly spreading across country.
This has been reported before warnings that the disease could wreak havoc on rabbit populations and ecosystems in the United States — and it appears to be taking off.

What is “Bunny Ebola?”

It’s real name is Rabbit hemorrhagic disease, or RHDV2, according to the report, and it can cause severe internal bleeding and organ failure. And, it said, it’s “highly infectious and nearly always fatal.”

How fast can it move?

Well, according to a report in the Sacramento Bee, a man in Texas had 200 rabbits. They all died from “Bunny Ebola,” between a Friday and a Sunday.

What are the symptoms?

Well, sudden death is one. So, not much you can do there. Another is, reportedly, nose bleeds.

The report said the first known cases in the United States popped up in Ohio in 2018, and the virus reportedly “spreads easily through blood, urine and feces.” And, unfortunately, it appears to be fatal in 90 percent of cases. Even if a rabbit survives, the report said, it still poses a risk of spreading the virus for another 42 days.
Thus far, cases have been confirmed in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Texas and officials are looking at population control policies in hopes of curbing the spread.

Here are some tips to keep yoyr rabbits cool in the heat.

Give your bunnies cool ceramic tiles to lay on. The ceramic will stay cool, even in warm weather and will be a great place for your rabbits to relax on. Not only are they great for keeping cool, but they are super easy to keep clean. Damp towels or damp cotton pillowcases also provide cool flooring for bunnies to lay on, you can also keep these in the freezer so they are cooler for longer & alternate them. You could place a ceramic tile inside the pillow case.

Provide plenty of fresh greens. Wash the greens in cool water to help your rabbits get extra water and make them more appealing

Most of a rabbit’s body heat is released through their ears, so you can help them cool off by spritzing a little bit of cool water right behind their ears. You don’t want to make them soaking wet. Just a light misting to help them out. Also, you’ll want to be careful to make sure you don’t get any water inside their ears. That can end up leading to an infection since the moisture can get stuck in the inner ear, especially with lop eared rabbits
Patio umbrellas & sun sail shades are a great way to provide instant shade.
