Super Red Arowana
The Super Red Arowana is the most well known and sought after Arowana variety. Originating from Kalimantan (Kapaus River and Sentarum Lake).
These Arowana have strong red colour against a contrasting base. Multiple colours will appear in the fish ranging from Reds, Purples, Greens, Yellows, Oranges and many more. They are very slow to develop final colour with their best body colour often not being displayed until 3 years or older.
It is very difficult to judge the colour that will be present in the adult fish and due to the long development period and unique combinations of colour these fish are often expensive and sought after in larger sizes.

Arowana is more closely related to arapaimas, the only other members in the Arapaimidae family, than the South American, Asian and Australian arowanas in the Osteoglossidae family (Arapaimidae is sometimes included in Osteoglossidae). Compared to these, the African Arowana has a more terminal mouth and is the only one that feeds extensively on plankton.

What to Feed my Arowana?
As juveniles, arowanas will readily accept small live fish and other small insects such as worms, roaches and crickets.
You should always consider the size of the prey you will be offering to your fish.
As they grow, you could slowly wean them to accepting non-live frozen foods such as market shrimp, prawns, shellfish, and other meal fish.
Although it’s not easy to achieve, there are some arowanas who would eventually take processed food such as pellets.
However, you must always make sure that the amount protein is sufficient when feeding processed food.

How Often Should I Feed my Arowana?
From juveniles, arowanas grow extremely fast; hence, they need a lot of energy and food. Small arowanas should be fed twice a day with quality food to keep up with their rapid growth rate.
As they grow bigger, their growth slows down along with their metabolism. Naturally, they’ll taper down their appetite and accept less food. You could feed sub-adults to adults once a day.
If you’re wondering if it’s possible to overfeed your arowana (like, nobody wants an exploding arowana on their hands!) it pays to know that arowanas will ignore food when they’re already full.
You should feed them as long as they are still accepting food. Just make sure to remove all uneaten food right away to avoid spikes in ammonia levels.

Arapaima gigas
The Arapaima is also known as the Pirarucu and originates from the Amazon Basin in South America.
Size is about 5 inches roughly. Very rare to see this awesome monster fish in the hobby!
