Every year brings its own challenges and this one will be no different. I think deep down I always knew this day would come.
We have had Dip’N Dot as a “foster fail” for over 5 years. In March of 2020 we received a call from one of my client’s vet’s office to help assess a stray dog that was dumped on the road outside of their building.
After his assessment, we discovered he was completely DEAF and almost immediately I was asked if I could train/foster him, otherwise they were going to be forced to euthanize him by the end of the week 😅😮💨
I didn’t know at the time, that two days later the world was going to shut down [covid] and we were going to end up liable for him for the next five+ years.
Over time we have laid down a solid foundation and provided him with clear, consistent communication via hand signs & body language, as well conditioned him to the e-collar. Yes— he is a deaf dog that is successfully, off-leash trained, thanks to the e-collar! Along with being off-leash trained, he is crate trained, conditioned to a sliplead & prong collar, treadmill trained, and fully comfortable in a muzzle!
What breed is he you ask? He’s a “working breed” meaning he needs a job. We think/have been told he’s a mixed with a and the shoe certainly fits. If he doesn’t have a job, he will wreak havoc like a bull in a china shop. How old? 5-6 years (we think).
He loves going on runs/hikes/off-leash and is a huge fan of tug and fetch! As long as he is fulfilled, he is great at settling in on his bed/cot and chewing on a bone until he falls asleep.
Dip (aka Derp) is a goofball at heart and absolutely loves attention but is also great at being neutral. He’s a field trip friendly dog for sure! People can’t say enough good things about him when we go out in public, even if he is wearing his muzzle! He certainly steals the show everywhere he goes.
Throughout his time at the Co-Op our business has grown significantly, as well as Dip’s frustrations and needs. With our lifestyle, we haven’t been able to provide the attention he needs as a working breed dog, which in turn has caused him to become more [dog] aggressive. This of course is a major liability for our business as well as a mental strain in our day-to-day life. His reactivity originally stemmed from being attacked in 2020 by a large, male, off-leash dog and it has since grown from there.
As a human, business owner, wife, dog mom— I know continuing this lifestyle is not what’s best for him or my mental health or the future of our home. That being said, we have decided what is best for everyone is for Dip to find his |true| forever home [before having to consider BE].
Curious? He makes a great companion but would do best with a younger, active owner, who prefers a single-dog household. He is GREAT with people/kids and cats. He does shed (sorry no HA here) but has a short coat, is easy to groom and doesn’t mind nail trims either!
I have to have hope that ^this^ home
exists for him somewhere out there. We are willing to travel further but would prefer for him to stay local to the triad or at least in the state. With that being said, we of course would continue working with him and his new handler/owner to help build their relationship and make the transition as seamless as possible!
It has taken me years to make this post.
We have had this discussion so many times but I can feel in my gut this time,
this is what feels right. It’s time.
If you or anyone else you know would be interested in adopting this handsome fella, please let us know privately, via direct message!
