After a successful cooperative care practice session, my cats are happy on their stationing towels. Chex is taking a bath and Cora is waiting for more treats. It's always good to practice when everybody is healthy so that you have some basic foundations ingrained for when you need to use real medicine and not just churu.

So you know how I'm always talking about giving cats choices? Well I learned last week that a good way to water plants is to put them in a shallow sink with water and "water them from the bottom up." You place them in the sink and let them pull up as much water as they want and they'll stop when they want to. So basically I'm now giving my plants choice. CHOICES FOR ALL!

Cats are living, feeling creatures that need continued care throughout their whole lives. They are not to be discarded when they have issues. There are answers, treatment and help available from vets, feline behaviorists (like me!) and other wonderful animal professionals.

A sweet senior cat who was taken to a veterinarian to be killed after she started peeing outside her litterbox thankfully had her life spared through the

For many parents, the idea of kids and cats together is an absolute natural. For other parents though, it’s a scary thought that may get the family cat a one-way ticket to the local shelter. Children and cats can be wonderful companions for each other. My kids have had the most loving, playful, en...

I have completed my first presentation at a feline online conference and I feel so very accomplished and proud of myself. It was a big step for me to firstly overcome my fears and anxiety and plunge through anyway and secondly believe in myself enough to agree to do a talk. When scary and challenging opportunities come your way, say yes! It'll be amazing the things you'll learn.

Reframing these types of labels into ways to your cat is communicating with you will strengthen your bond and help you both live happier lives together.

Your cat isn't "mean." She might be afraid of strangers.

Your cat isn't "a jerk." She might knock things off shelves because she needs attention and quality social interaction.

Your cat isn't "vindictive." She might urinate on the floor because something's not right about her litter box, she has a urinary tract infection, or she is stressed by a new housemate.

Labels like these don't help us understand our cats. They make it really easy to brush off behavior problems as an inherent flaw in the cat.

Instead of using these terms, we should look at behavior as communication. We can think, "how is this behavior helping my cat meet her needs? How can I help her meet those needs in an appropriate way?"

February is Responsible Pet Owners Month...

Knowledge is power, and an important second step is educating yourself about cats’ natural behaviors, needs, and the responsibilities of cat ownership. In fact, a recent study found that cat owners who have an accurate understanding of feline behavior and who routinely address their cats’ unique environmental needs are less likely to report behavioral problems and form closer bonds with their cats. Familiarizing yourself with a few key points is the best way to maximize the years of companionship, entertainment, fun, and love that adopting a cat can provide to you and your new feline friend.

To make it easier for new cat owners on what to expect, we created a brochure with some key points to know:
