Our lesson program focuses on creating a successful rider who can work with different types of horses, helping them reach their true potential. During a lesson with LMH you'll be doing everything from grooming, tacking, and groundwork to riding. We have a small assortment of lesson horses that work for beginners up to intermediate riders, or even those experienced riders looking to get into a western discipline. We also have an indoor arena so that we can keep putting those hours in, even with our lovely Pennsylvania weather!
The bare basics are the most important part of your horsemanship journey. It's similar to a pyramid, everything you learn creates a strong foundation that is made up of the basics: how you handle, groom, read, and interact with a horse. Once you understand what your basics are, you'll learn how to develop: feel, timing, and release.
During a lesson with LMH your instructor may or may not be on a horse. Some things are better taught by seeing it done instead of explained. Just like the horses, everyone has their own learning style; some are visual learners, whereas others are auditory learners.
Beginner lessons with LMH will ultimately prepare you for owning your own equine partner. When you're ready to find that partner, we can assist you in searching for and finding the perfect horse for you. For more information, ask about our sale services.
During lessons with LMH you'll learn the basics of horse health, care, effective riding, and how to create a solid partnership. When first starting out, you may have a few lessons on the lungeline to focus on building your seat, getting the feel of different gaits, and finding your balance. These are the basics that will keep you in the saddle and off the ground as you progress into more difficult scenarios. As you progress you may be going through a barrel pattern, navigating creek crossings, loping circles at different speeds, etc. The basics LMH teaches can be applied to any discipline you may want to work towards.
LMH also offers the ability for haul-ins so you can work on the partnership between you and your own horse! I chose this photo because it shows an "ah-hah moment" between Loren and her horse Blue. Loren is working on softening Blue up to cues; he rides well but is a little hard-mouthed. Loren is working on herself as well to fix this because she's an over-thinker. Instead of just working on his whoa over and over again, we worked on catching Loren off-guard and asking for the whoa so she didn't get a chance to overthink it! Instead of relying on her hands which she's been conditioned to do, she was able to get a really nice and snappy whoa mainly off her seat!
