Did you know…? Colostrum is milk that contains high concentrations of antibodies from the mother. In most species, the newborn is only able to absorb these antibodies in the first 24 hours of life. For donkeys and horses, there is no replacement for the mother’s colostrum.

Everyone meet Darryl, this little guy had a rough start. He was born on a cold night and was so weak he wasn’t able to nurse on his own. Darryl was tube fed colostrum collected from his mother by Harney Veterinary Services. The next day Darryl’s antibodies were checked and he still had not received adequate antibodies from his mother, this leads to a condition called failure of passive transfer. In the case of most species, this means they do not have adequate immunity to fight off normal pathogens. Dr. Harney and the owner made the decision to administer plasma (collected from a donor) to Darryl that would provide him the antibodies necessary to survive.

We are happy to report that after receiving the plasma, Darryl is doing great!
