Enjoying our first fully homegrown salad of the year. 😊🌱

Baby arugula, chard, kale, spinach, and various lettuces from thinning out our seedlings. Oh my goodness. I could be happy in a garden of just arugula.

FIRST CSA BOX OF THE YEAR AVAILABLE TODAY! WOOP WOOP!

I've got over 5 pounds of organically grown produce for you in each box. Your box will include dwarf blue kale, Fordhook Giant swiss chard, cucumbers (including burpless varieties!), and pattypan squash (or, as I like to call it, UFO squash). All for $10! You can swing by my place today or tomorrow to pick it up (and get a garden tour, if you like!).

If you've never eaten kale/chard/pattypan squash before, I can attest to their tastiness. Our favorite way to eat pattypan is to cut it into thick slices and grill it; kale is delicious in quiche and curries; and cooked chard is interchangeable with cooked spinach: great in minestrone (and chili!).

If you're interested, get in touch with me today! You can shoot me a message here on Facebook, call, or text me!

Update on my slug traps: oranges are a no-go. I repeat: ORANGES ARE A NO-GO. These are the only two little cuties foolish enough to fall for my evil plan of re-homing them at the local park. 😂

I dunno if the slugs in my yard are just rebellious teens or what. They won't fall for any of my tricks: yummy, cool orange halves, the damp underside of wood scraps...whatever the case, I've resorted to simply going out of an evening and picking them off one by one from my veggies, putting them in a jar, and then walking the jar down to the local park and giving them a fresh start on life. (Did you hear that, Lisa? You'll never have to bump into your ex and his new arm candy again. You're FREE, BABAY!)

What do you guys do for slugs? I'm a sensitive soul and won't kill them myself, though I've been known to put one or two in the bird seed tray in my backyard if I'm too lazy to walk them to the park. 🙃

You can get your hands on some in one of two ways:

1. Go old school! Just come over my house with $3 cash within the next couple of days. Get in touch with me first, though, so I can make sure I'm home. :)

First CSA harvest available now! Woo hoo!

Harvested just this morning, I'm comin at ya live with 5 oz bags of a delicious mix of organic and non-organic lettuces, all of which have been organically grown*. Each bag is $3, and I have 6 available. Just visit our shop here to purchase: https://www.facebook.com/commerce/products/3979110418809915/

Pop it in your cart, check out, and then swing by the Cottage within the next couple of days at your leisure to pick 'em up. Easy peasy, right?

Or, if you'd prefer to go old school, just stop by my place in the next couple of days to pay in cash. :) Make sure to get in touch before stopping by so someone's here to meet ya.

Message me if you've got any questions! Oh, and don't wait- this isn't grocery store stuff that will sit on a shelf for days on end: it's best eaten within the week (plus the sooner you eat it after harvest, the better it is for you! Mmmm).

*The only difference between the two is whether or not the seeds from which I grew them were organic, but they are all grown using organic methods.

Thought I'd say hello while I harvest some lettuce.

08/05/2021

Thank you to everyone who braved the yucky weather this morning to come out and say hello and support us! It was so nice to see so many of your faces IN REAL LIFE!!! You're all great. 😊 I so appreciate all of this support. Hope you're all having wonderful Saturdays. ❤️

Excited to see you all at the little plant sale tomorrow morning! It's not supposed to rain, so that's a win in my book. 😊

P.S. Sunday is mother's day! If your mum's a gardener, you could pick her up a couple growing things. :)

P.P.S. Only have one or two tomatoes left, but lots of everything else. :) SO MANY CUCUMMMMBERRRRS they just had great germination. I had a terrible time getting peppers to germinate, which makes me so sad because I inhale jalapenos. Luckily I still have some pickled ones left over from last year's garden. Oh well. Enough rambling. See you tomorrow!

Hey boys and girls! Pre-ordering details as promised. :)

I just spent way longer than I expected thoroughly going through every single little seedling I’ve got a-growin and separating out the ones I’m keeping for my garden from the ones I’ll be selling May 8. But it was a very agreeable way to pass the time. 😁

So here’s what’s going on. I’m going to list all the varieties here in this post. If you see some you’re keen on, I’d recommend pre-ordering, as a few are in short supply (like tomatoes! I know, I know, I’m sad too). Just message me here on Facebook or shoot me an email at [email protected] telling me which varieties you’d like and how many of each, and I’ll message you back with your final order and your total and payment instructions. After you're all paid up, I’ll set your plants aside for you and you can either pick them up at my place or I’ll drop ‘em off at yours for an additional $5.

And here’s that list for ya:

Cherokee Purple Tomatoes
Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes
Super Sweet Cherry Tomatoes
Tomatillos (Organic)
Ground Cherries
Cal Wonder Red Bell Peppers (Organic)
Hybrid Sweet Peppers (Organic)
Seedless Cucumbers
Wisconsin Cucumbers
Marketmore Cucumbers
National Pickling Cucumbers
Scallop Squash
Butternut Squash
Sage
Oregano
Lemon Balm

So, you probably knew this, but marigolds are awesome for your veggie patch. They repel pests and attract beneficial insects. They’re said deter rabbits, although last year I found a baby bunny hiding in a patch of marigolds, so I can’t speak to that. 😉 They’re beautiful, easy to grow, and have a long blooming period. Growing up, they were the first flower I learned to take care of: my mom always planted them around our tomatoes and she taught me how to collect their seeds to plant next year. I always plant them in and around our veggie beds because they do such a great job of protecting crops.

I’ll have some for sale at our upcoming plant sale. :)

These tough annuals are nearly fool-proof.

Focus on: Ground Cherries! Just one of the many goodies that will be included in our CSA boxes. We’ll also have some seedlings available for purchase at our upcoming plant sale on May 8 in case you want to grow your own.

Guys, I'm so pumped to grow ground cherries this year for a million and one reasons. One of which is that I've never actually tasted one. But from what I’ve read, they taste like magic: a blend of butterscotch, vanilla, and pineapple with a bit of tomato-ey tartness.

Another reason I’m looking forward to growing them is that they’re incredibly easy to store and have a long shelf life: up to 3 months when left in the husk. No need to worry about canning or freezing right away.

Huzzah for ground cherries!

A THING! A THING!
..A PLANT SALE!

May 8 from 9-1 at our home. Save the date!

Come one, come all. I've been spending all winter growing and tending to a bajillion seedlings in hopes of sharing them with you. SO I WILL! I've got over 500 lovely little plants growing, and they'll be hardened off and ready to plant in your garden come May 8. (Did I mention the sale was May 8 from 9-1? I think I did. That's when it is. GET OVER HERE. [Sorry, just watched Mortal Kombat, which Joel keeps calling Mortal Wombat. 😂])

If you don't know our address, just sign up for our email list here, and all of the details (including the location) will be emailed to you immediately (make sure to check your spam folder):
https://mailchi.mp/22e671132b26/hodgepodgecottage

Even though all of our information is available wherever, the Joeler and I were still feeling a little weird about straight up posting our home address on Facebook, and thought it was slightly better if strangers got it through an email. You know. Logic. So that's why. You can also PM me and I'll tell you. :D

Seedlings are $2 each. I accept cash and credit ($10 minimum for credit). If you're interested in pre-ordering some plants, stay tuned: I'm gonna post more info about how to do that soon!

Here follows a list of some of the seedlings that will be available:

Tomatoes
Peppers
Cucumbers
Herbs
Summer Squash
Winter Squash
Pumpkins
Lettuces
Swiss Chard
Kale
Endive
Spinach
Annual & Perennial Flowers
Tomatillos
Ground Cherries (the plant I'm MOST EXCITED TO GROW!)
Plus much more!

I'll have a variety of each type of veggie, including heirlooms and organic plants. All plants are grown using organic methods, but not all seeds planted were organic seeds; fully organic plants will be noted as such.

So where will you be the morning of Saturday, May 8? That's right, the square hole. (Sorry. Have you seen that video? It's hilarious. Look it up.) No! You'll be at my place. See you then!

Hi all! Deanna here. If you're reading this, you probably know me in real life, and if you know me, you're aware that I'm always up to something. This time it's GARDENING! Which is another thing you also probably know if you've talked to me anytime within the past year and a half and I wouldn't shut up about it no matter how much your eyes glazed over. Just couldn't help myself (...I'm sorry). A year and half ago is when Joel and I bought our first home and I immediately started going about turning it into a little homestead.

Anywho, our home and garden have become one big experimental series of projects for us, which is just how we like it. Last year I had such a fun time with our garden that I had the idea this year to make it way bigger and sell the things I grow to friends and family (aka you bunch!).

So if you were wondering what the heck this page was all about, that's it. Our home is the Hodge Podge Cottage, and this is the landing page for all things garden-related. Helloooooo and welcome!
