Separation related behavior is present in all social animals and is a result of natural evolution. This fear of being separated is needed to protect young individuals from situations where being alone or being separated from protective individuals or environments posed higher risks to their safety.
Fear is fundamental to surviving and is a normal part of a social animals life! It is normal for your dog to feel fear.
If an individual is in a prolonged state of fear or this fear generalizes to other situations then it can turn into something less functional and may end up becoming a clinically diagnosed condition, like a formal diagnosis of separation anxiety or phobia.
