Separation related behavior is present in all social animals and is a result of natural evolution. This fear of being separated is needed to protect young individuals from situations where being alone or being separated from protective individuals or environments posed higher risks to their safety.

Fear is fundamental to surviving and is a normal part of a social animals life! It is normal for your dog to feel fear.

If an individual is in a prolonged state of fear or this fear generalizes to other situations then it can turn into something less functional and may end up becoming a clinically diagnosed condition, like a formal diagnosis of separation anxiety or phobia.

Everyone’s alone time training looks different. Here we hit a bump after an accidental lock out and some noise sensitivities but worked through it by dropping criteria, giving breaks, ds/cc to sounds, and modifying the environment. After a couple weeks of sticking with it, this pup has a really exciting week 3 reassessment and continued to make leaps through week 4.

We are excited to announce that we have a little over a week left of our coursework to be certified as separation anxiety specialists.

We plan to start taking clients once we are officially CSATS, which will be in the next couple weeks. At that point our website will also be updated with detailed information on our training and packages.

For the time being here is a little sneak peek of what we will offer. We will work with you and your pup to systematically increase their comfort level with being alone. By going at the pup’s pace we avoid flooding them with stress and they learn that being alone is no big deal and nothing to panic about. In return you no longer have to worry about what you are coming home to and how your pup is feeling while you are gone!

Even if your pup doesn’t have a formal separation anxiety diagnosis from a vet, we will be able to help them with their alone time behavior. The training is done completely remotely so will be able to help you no matter where in the WORLD you are.

We can’t wait to help these pups soon!

When we work with pups who are uncomfortable with certain triggers we like to teach an “emergency u-turn”. This can create distance from a trigger in a pinch and when it’s too close for a counter conditioning moment.

If we only worked on this with triggers present, then we wouldn’t be setting anyone up for success.

So how do we teach it? We add it to our list of “fun games we play on walks”. It helps build engagement, creates opportunities for reinforcement, becomes a predictable and fun game, and helps to build the pup’s fluency with the skill.

Hi wonderful dog community. We wanted to let you know that half of BAE is leaving the Bay!

Brittany will be moving to Portland next month and will start taking clients there in the next few weeks. Please spread the word. She would love to connect with any trainers in the area to start building a community there as well!

Emiko will continue to hold down the Bay and see pups in SF, Oakland and south Marin.

We also have remote training options for anyone outside of these areas!
