Seizure free at 17!

When I met Nico 6 years ago, he was having regular seizures. He was started on medications, and he was doing well, but then he started having breakthrough seizures. After a while, those started becoming more regular, and we got concerned.

It took my husband and I having kids for me to realize the neurological detriments of dyes in our foods, and I was horrified with myself that I hadn’t connected the dots with Nico.

Once I realized his food had dyes, I dug into researching pet food companies and the benefits of fresh foods for dogs. We changed his diet, made adjustments to his lifestyle, and like magic, his seizures stopped!

He is now 17 and has been seizure free for the last 2 years! 💖

The short answer: yes.

And it needs to be on time. Here’s why:

Rabies is a federally mandated 🧁 that is legally required for all pets in the United States.

When you don’t 🧁 for rabies, you’re at the risk of having to euthanize your pet, and let me tell you, it is heart wrenching to watch a pet parent have to say a premature goodbye to their fur baby because of something so horrific and preventable.

Now, I will advocate for titer tests all day long, but this is the one 🧁 that is mandatory for all pets, and for good reason.

Detox afterwards if that’s your thing, but please, please 🧁 your pet for rabies! 💖

Parasite exposures are more common than we’d like to believe. Our pets are exposed everyday which means we are exposed everyday and need to take necessary precautions; particularly children, the elderly and the immunocompromised. 💖

❓Could your pet have an intestinal parasite?

Here are some of the top exposures:

1. Public parks: These are high traffic areas, and many do not require a negative f***l test to attend. Even then, f***l tests can be inaccurate. Your best bet is to have an ELISA antigen test run on your pet’s stool sample to ensure they do not have intestinal parasites. Ideally this is done every 6mo-1 yr
2. Shoes: Parasite eggs are microscopic and easy to carry into the house with you. Even if you wipe your shoes off, some eggs are very resilient! Don’t wear outside shoes in the house.
3. Mom: Puppies and kittens are commonly infected with intestinal parasites through mom’s placenta and/or milk
4. Prey: Many small animals that dogs and cats like to hunt can carry a stage of parasite that can infect your pet after it is ingested.
5. Fleas: Fleas are a common carrier of tapeworm. If you see rice-like segments on your pet’s rear end or on their bedding, you should consider treating for fleas.
6. Potted plants: Potting soil is a common source of infection in cat households. Not only can the soil already be contaminated when you buy it, but some cats will also use them as a litter box.

If you think your pet may have been exposed to an intestinal parasite, please contact your vet about ordering a f***l exam. 💖

As veterinary technicians, we do our work because we truly love what we do. It’s not for the pay.

Despite what many think, veterinary technicians are ❌NOT❌paid a living wage in most states. We live below our means, care for multiple pets (show me a vet tech that doesn’t have at least 1 😂), and support our families. 🚨 Full disclosure: I make $20/hr at my clinic

Many of us own our own business as a side hustle to supplement our income because we can’t imagine leaving our field.

All that to say, please be kind to your vet techs. Are hearts are in our work, we try our best every day, we love your pets too 💖

Did you know that not all pets need yearly vaccinations? Or even every 3 years?!

New studies have shown that core vaccines can be effective for upwards of 5 to 8 years which means we are perpetually over 🧁ing our pets. This is where titer testing comes in.

In order to know whether your pet is protected against some major illnesses, titer testing or vaccinating is the only way to be absolutely sure.

If you want to decrease the amount of 🧁s your pet is receiving, talk to your vet about getting a titer test done! 💖

A Hair Tissue Mineral Annalysis (HTMA) is a test that uses a small sample of your pet’s fur to measure levels of various minerals and other trace elements present in their body.

HTMA’s are helpful in guiding practitioners in assessing nutrient levels, identifying toxin exposures and guiding diet and supplement recommendations.

It can tell us things like:

🏃How effective your pet’s metabolism is
😰How well they’re managing stress
🩺The status of their thyroid and adrenal health
🍽️How well they’re digesting their food
🎸The status of their heavy metal load

Many conventional veterinarians do not utilize HTMAs, so if you’re wanting to have an HTMA done on your pet, it’s best to refer to a holistic, integrative or functional veterinary professional for help. 💖

I’m sure I’ll ruffle a few feathers with this (especially with it being Mental Health Awareness Month), but a commercial was brought to my attention yesterday, and I just can’t let this go unsaid..

This commercial was encouraging the public to register their pets as emotional support animals (ESAs) in order for it to be federally legal for owners to take their pets into public with them.

❌THIS IS NOT TRUE! ❌

ESAs are NOT federally protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act and therefore do not have the right to be allowed in public spaces like service animals do.

Do you deal with an anxious fur baby? 😰

Mental health isn’t only important for humans but for our pets too!

Some of my favorite tips for dealing with anxiety:

🦮 exercise
🧠 mental stimulation
⬇️ reduce stressors for you and your pet within the home
❌ eliminate as many toxins as possible
😌 calming essential oils
✨ energy work

Keep in mind that the majority of the time, anxiety relieving techniques need to be layered in order to be effective!

If you’re dealing with an anxious pet and are looking for solutions, please reach out! I’d love to help you work on a custom plan for your fur baby! 💖

“How do I know if my pet is in pain?”

I feel like this is one of the most common questions we hear in vet med!

It’s never a fun feeling to think your pet is in pain, so if you’re concerned they might be, please reach out to your vet or a trusted tech with a video of what has you concerned so we can see what you’re seeing at home! A lot of pets will mask symptoms due to fear while at the clinic(especially our kitty friends 😅), so videos are always appreciated! 💖

As a technician, I always advocate for prevention, but this often gets thought of as preventive MEDICINE. While there is always a time and place for that, I also advocate for natural prevention, and ✨energy healing✨ is a form of this!

Everything we interact with has its own energy frequency (think back to learning about atoms in middle school science class!). These frequencies have the ability to block energy flowing through our bodies and encourage stress and disease processes, OR they can encourage energy flow, raise our vibrations and encourage healing!

Nutrition is a form of energy healing which is why I advocate for “fresh is best”. Fresh, whole foods have a higher energy frequency than highly processed foods which can help improve gut health and are a great basis for raising our vibrations.

Good nutrition helps improve gut health which in turn increases serotonin levels, raising energy vibrations and makes for great prevention against disease processes which can include parasites like intestinal bugs, fleas and ticks! 😃

Nutrition and gut health are the basis for whole body wellness! 💖

It’s that time of year again, and fleas and ticks are out with a vengeance!

Whether you choose to use pharmaceuticals natural remedies or no preventives, be sure to be checking your pets for ticks!

Did you know that immature ticks, called nymphs, are more likely to transmit tick-borne diseases than adult ticks❓

This is because they’re so tiny, they’re more likely to stay attached long enough to take a full blood meal from your pet before you even notice they’re there.

I HIGHLY recommend having your dog tested for tick-borne diseases every year. This is done through a simple blood draw that can easily be done at the same time as yearly bloodwork, so no additional pokes for your fur baby! 🥰

If you have questions about fleas, ticks, preventives or testing, please reach out! 💖

Do you worry about the air quality in your home?

If you haven’t considered using a HEPA air filter, you should!

HEPA filters can remove up to 99.97% of pollutants like:

🦠dust
🦠pollen
🦠mold spores
🦠bacteria
🦠and other contaminants 0.3 microns or bigger!

Short term exposure to poor air quality can lead to things like:

😷Allergies
😷Asthma
😷Eye and throat irritation

Longer term exposure can lead to more severe health issues.

HEPA air filters and allowing fresh air into your home are 2 of the best things you can do to preserve yours and your fur baby’s respiratory health! 💖

💦 WATER!💦

One of life’s essentials!

Have you thought about what’s in your pet’s water bowl recently?

Tap water is full of things that aren’t good for us or our pets!

It can contain things like:

☠️ fluoride
☠️ chlorine
☠️ pesticides
☠️ heavy metals
☠️ carcinogens

and more! Yuck!🤢

All the extra junk is detrimental to your pet’s health which is why filtering your water is so, so important!

Happy Gotchya Day to my Gemma girl! 💖

She may have left us 4 years ago, but she still plays an integral role in my career!

Thank you for all the love and knowledge you imparted on me over the years ❤️ Love you always, baby girl!

We often look at 4 vital signs in veterinary medicine:

⚕️Heart rate
⚕️Respiratory rate
⚕️Temperature and
⚕️Blood pressure

But nutrition is considered to be the 5th and frequently the most overlooked vital sign! Why is that? 🤔

Personally, I believe it’s because nutrition is such a complicated subject, and Big Kibble has majority of the say in what we’re taught when it comes to our education 📚 in nutrition.

While I will always advocate that “fresh is best”, please know that there’s no shame in feeding your dog a good quality kibble❗️

Kibble was designed to be a complete, balanced, convenient, budget-friendly way to feed your pet. But you should also know that kibble can be highly inflammatory and therefore affect your pet’s entire body.

Nutrition is the foundation of your pet’s health, and while there’s always better out there, topping your pet’s kibble with fresh, whole foods is a great place to start increasing the quality of their nutrition and improving that 5th vital sign!

Foods I like to use as toppers for anti-inflammatory effects:

🥬leafy greens
🍄medicinal mushrooms
🐟omega 3s
🫐blueberries
🥦steamed cruciferous veggies

Most living things, including us and our pets have a circadian rhythm.

A circadian rhythm is a pattern that your body follows that helps control certain patterns of your behavior within a 24-hour period. This includes things like our sleep cycle and the biological clocks of our inner organs.

Getting early morning sun on our skin and eyes, grounding ourselves on natural surfaces like grass and sand, and negative ions from moving water are all great ways to help reset your circadian rhythm! 💖

The full moon is coming! 🌕

Is it time to deworm your pet? Here are some tips to help you decide:

1. Now’s the time to check a f***l! Parasites are on the move closer to the full moon.
2. Could your pet have been exposed in the last few months? Some common exposures include: potting soil, parks, fleas, eating prey, and even out shoes!
3. Is your pet showing symptoms? Bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, scooting or licking can all be signs of a parasitic infection, but so can high white cell counts on bloodwork and even skin irritations.
4. Has your pet recently been treated for parasites? If not, it might be time to do a deworming!

If it is time for a deworming, try to use a natural dewormer like pumpkin seeds, diatomaceous earth, or fresh garlic! 💖
