This is where things start to get tricky. The simple answer is: it varies.

Depending on which 💉 it is and the type.

💉s are divided into 4 different types, and each one stimulates the immune system differently.

As a general rule, AHAA recommends core 💉s every 3 years and non-core 💉s yearly. Exceptions to this are Leptospirosis and certain cat 💉s depending on the type of 💉 used.

But how long does immunity from a 💉 really last? New studies are coming out that immunity from core 💉s may last 5-8 years plus!

How do we know how long our individual pet’s immunity lasts after 💉s? It’s impossible to tell without re💉ing or titer testing.

Whenever we inject a foreign substance into the body, we have to have the realistic expectation that there may be side effects. Side effects from 💉s can range from mild inflammation at the injection site to anaphylaxis.

Each pet is an individual, and there’s no way to predict which pet will have a severe reaction to a 💉.

Swipe for some side effects to watch out for when 💉ing your pet. If your pet experiences any of these side effects after receiving 💉(s), please reach out to your vet! 💖

Pet 💉s are split into 2 categories: core and non-core.

According to the Animal Hospital Association of America (AHAA), a “core 💉” is a 💉 that is recommended for all dogs/cats irrespective of lifestyle unless there is a medical reason not to 💉.
“Non-core 💉s” are recommended for some dogs/cats based on lifestyle, geographic location and risk of exposure.

“Core” 💉s for dogs include: Distemper, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis, and Rabies
“Core” 💉s for cats include: Herpesvirus-1, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, Leukemia* (cats under 1yo)

“Non-core” 💉s for dogs include: Bordetella, Lyme, Influenza, and Rattlesnake toxoid
“Non-core” 💉s for cats include: Leukemia* (cats over 1yo)

A 💉 is a substance designed to stimulate the body’s immune system to recognize and fight specific infectious agents, such as viruses or bacteria. Vaccines contain components that mimic parts of these pathogens (like proteins or weakened versions of the virus). When a pet is 💉ed, their immune system “learns” to recognize and remember the pathogen, so if exposed to it later, the body can respond quickly to prevent or reduce the severity of the disease.

Seizure free at 17!

When I met Nico 6 years ago, he was having regular seizures. He was started on medications, and he was doing well, but then he started having breakthrough seizures. After a while, those started becoming more regular, and we got concerned.

It took my husband and I having kids for me to realize the neurological detriments of dyes in our foods, and I was horrified with myself that I hadn’t connected the dots with Nico.

Once I realized his food had dyes, I dug into researching pet food companies and the benefits of fresh foods for dogs. We changed his diet, made adjustments to his lifestyle, and like magic, his seizures stopped!

He is now 17 and has been seizure free for the last 2 years! 💖

The short answer: yes.

And it needs to be on time. Here’s why:

Rabies is a federally mandated 🧁 that is legally required for all pets in the United States.

When you don’t 🧁 for rabies, you’re at the risk of having to euthanize your pet, and let me tell you, it is heart wrenching to watch a pet parent have to say a premature goodbye to their fur baby because of something so horrific and preventable.

Now, I will advocate for titer tests all day long, but this is the one 🧁 that is mandatory for all pets, and for good reason.

Detox afterwards if that’s your thing, but please, please 🧁 your pet for rabies! 💖

Parasite exposures are more common than we’d like to believe. Our pets are exposed everyday which means we are exposed everyday and need to take necessary precautions; particularly children, the elderly and the immunocompromised. 💖

❓Could your pet have an intestinal parasite?

Here are some of the top exposures:

1. Public parks: These are high traffic areas, and many do not require a negative f***l test to attend. Even then, f***l tests can be inaccurate. Your best bet is to have an ELISA antigen test run on your pet’s stool sample to ensure they do not have intestinal parasites. Ideally this is done every 6mo-1 yr
2. Shoes: Parasite eggs are microscopic and easy to carry into the house with you. Even if you wipe your shoes off, some eggs are very resilient! Don’t wear outside shoes in the house.
3. Mom: Puppies and kittens are commonly infected with intestinal parasites through mom’s placenta and/or milk
4. Prey: Many small animals that dogs and cats like to hunt can carry a stage of parasite that can infect your pet after it is ingested.
5. Fleas: Fleas are a common carrier of tapeworm. If you see rice-like segments on your pet’s rear end or on their bedding, you should consider treating for fleas.
6. Potted plants: Potting soil is a common source of infection in cat households. Not only can the soil already be contaminated when you buy it, but some cats will also use them as a litter box.

If you think your pet may have been exposed to an intestinal parasite, please contact your vet about ordering a f***l exam. 💖

As veterinary technicians, we do our work because we truly love what we do. It’s not for the pay.

Despite what many think, veterinary technicians are ❌NOT❌paid a living wage in most states. We live below our means, care for multiple pets (show me a vet tech that doesn’t have at least 1 😂), and support our families. 🚨 Full disclosure: I make $20/hr at my clinic

Many of us own our own business as a side hustle to supplement our income because we can’t imagine leaving our field.

All that to say, please be kind to your vet techs. Are hearts are in our work, we try our best every day, we love your pets too 💖

Did you know that not all pets need yearly vaccinations? Or even every 3 years?!

New studies have shown that core vaccines can be effective for upwards of 5 to 8 years which means we are perpetually over 🧁ing our pets. This is where titer testing comes in.

In order to know whether your pet is protected against some major illnesses, titer testing or vaccinating is the only way to be absolutely sure.

If you want to decrease the amount of 🧁s your pet is receiving, talk to your vet about getting a titer test done! 💖
