My cavalier, Bowie, was just put down this morning at 6 years old
As the title says, my cavalier, named Baby Bowie, was put down after struggling with epilepsy for the better part of 2 years. I came down the stairs this morning and made my coffee like any other day, and heard soft banging coming from Bowie’s room, the utility room.
I opened the door to find him seizing, which is never a good sign, I tried giving him his diazepam suppository to make him stop, it didn’t, tried giving his liquid medication to him, but still he persisted.
He kept going and going, and we knew it was probably time to say goodbye since we had already had this conversation with the vet after none of his medication seemed to be helping.
He kept seizing all throughout the drive to the vet, cuddled to my lap like how he was when I first brought him home to my family as a puppy 6 years ago.
When we arrived, my dad went in to get the vets as I sat with him in the car.
We chose to put him down with an overdose of anaesthetic, and when he finally stop seizing, he died in my dad’s arms.
He had been declining steadily since his convulsions started, and with each fit another piece of his personality and character seemed to go with him.
Towards the end he went from being a dog who never pooped inside the house in his life to regularly using the kitchen as his personal outhouse.
To me, I feel he really died a couple of months ago.
At least he’s in a better place, no longer in pain with my previous pets. And I can’t wait to see him again some day.
Rest in peace, Baby Bowie, I love you.
