It's been quite a while since I've shared a Congo update. He is doing awesome! He still picks at his feathers, but a 24 year old habit isn't easily broken. He's a happy boy. His favorite things are thorough head scratches early in the morning and late at night and singing. I hope you enjoy this little clip of Hey Good Lookin'. It is one of my favorites that he sings.
Congo update: Congo is doing so well! He's grown some new feathers. Only time will tell if he's going to keep them. He's been enjoying head scratches when he's in the mood. Here's a little video showing what a typical morning is like with this silly boy. I hope you enjoy it!
It's been far too long since the last Congo update. The last several weeks have been so very busy. As of a few weeks ago, we noticed a definite change in his demeanor. I am happy to say that the change is positive. I am now convinced that he was grieving deeply for his former owner who loved him so very much. We could see with each day that went by, he just seemed so much happier. He's been teaching us all kinds of things like songs, nursery rhymes and his love of playing ball. The night he finally got me to catch on that he wanted to play ball, he just lit up. He was like an excited toddler hardly able to contain himself. He will actually start saying the word "ball" to let me know he wants to play. Check out this video of the 2 of us playing ball and be sure to watch all the way to the end to hear his adorable little old man laugh.
Congo would like to help everyone get into the holiday spirit! He's been hiding this one from us, but finally decided to share yesterday. Shortly after this video he sang it several more times and all the way to the end. Be sure to like and follow Chewsie Bird Toys to see more updates and videos.
Congo update:
It’s hard to believe that Congo has now been with us one month. He is truly a sweet little soul. He’s still working on his feathers, but I knew that would be a long road and the behavior may never stop. He’s got a healthy diet, regular baths, toys, interaction with us and the company of our other birds, but it’s a hard habit to break. My personal philosophy is not to use collars or medications unless he is truly harming himself, ex mutilation. There is a lot of positive going on though. In the last week he has exploded with speaking. We had been told that he talked a lot, but I couldn’t have imagined just how much. He has spoken ever since the first day he entered our home, but the last 4 days have been filled with so many new phrases and songs. His vocabulary and enunciation are amazing. He says the funniest things, but there are also things he says that give you a glimpse into his past and the deep love his owner had for him. These moments are so touching. I hope you enjoy this adorable video! Stay tuned for more.
It's been exactly 2 weeks since Congo came home with us and a couple days ago he started plucking again. We were told he didn't really like baths so I wanted to wait a while before I tried to give him one. Every day he has been getting a little bit more comfortable stepping up for me so I decided today was the day! It turns out that he loves a bath with a mister bottle. If you listen close you'll hear him ask for a cracker. He also asked "you wanna bath", but I didn't catch that in the video. Although it's disappointing that he started plucking again, it's not unexpected. What I'm most excited about is his progress with gaining weight. He was so skinny. As you can see, he is filling in nicely. He is great about eating his pellets. His favorite is the Harrison's lifetime and high potency fine blended together. He wasn't a fan of the coarse pepper blend. With a healthy diet, regular baths and lots of toys I'm hopeful that we can break this cycle of feather destructive behavior. Regardless, he is a smart, sweet, funny guy that loves people and deserves the best of everything.
A busy conure is a happy, quiet conure! Lola has been working on destroying this Bon-bon foot toy and she's doing an excellent job. Believe it or not, she wasn't into toys when she first came to live with us last year. It's been a gradual process to get her engaged and playing. Stay tuned to find out how you can get this foot toy plus a bunch of other fun toys. Keep an eye out for a fantastic bundle deal just in time for the holidays!
Chewsie has some big news! I've been able to donate a lot of toys to deserving rescues, santuaries and fundraisers so far, but check out this video to see what's next.
It's bath day! Diego loves baths with the hose set to "mist". He would literally bathe for hours if I let him. What is your birds favorite way to take a bath?
