Hey There Dog Lovers ... We Could Use Your Help

Happy Foster Friday!

For 20 years, AHDRO has tirelessly rescued collies and shelties, providing them with veterinarian care, loving foster homes, and eventually adopting them to forever homes, saving over 1,650 dogs to date.

However, a nationwide shortage of fosters now threatens our ability to continue rescuing, forcing us to turn down requests unless we expand our "foster community."

With summer approaching and an increase in dogs needing homes, we urgently need more fosters—if interested, please read the fostering information and complete the online form. Check out our program: https://www.almosthomeohio.org/foster

Lady, a smart and beautiful collie, quickly learns new commands by observing other dogs and already knows Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Get Out, and Go to bed. She loves to play with other dogs after initial introductions, especially enjoys outdoor activities like running and playing hide and seek, and gets along better with male dogs. Indoors, Lady is quiet and affectionate, enjoys being petted, is calm around new people and children, and has excellent house manners, making her an ideal loyal companion ready for her forever home.

SEVEN DAYS FROM NOW, we will learn whether the judge in the Sherrard Animal Cruelty case, involving 198 dogs (all but four were Collies), will actually put Bite in his Bark or if he will Wee Wee Like a Puppy. The sentencing hearing for Karen Plambeck, who was found guilty on 11 of 12 counts of animal cruelty, is scheduled for June 10th. We hope he acts like a Big Dog and does the right thing for the dogs. 🐾

Please take this seriously:
Please please understand that when we give instructions/advice, there’s a reason behind every word. If you find injured, orphaned, or sick wildlife, do not handle/pet. Do not feed. Do not give water. If you have the animal contained, put it in a ventilated box/container and keep it in a dark quiet area away from pets and people. Then reach out for help. Don’t do anything else unless instructed to do so by a rehabber…not your neighbor, not Google, or someone who raised a chipmunk once, but a rehabber or wildlife professional.
Today someone who reached out to GWN for help with a rabies vector species was bitten by the animal. It seemed docile so he reached in to place a bowl of water in the crate and it bit him. GWN had to contact environmental health and the animal was picked up by animal control. It will be euthanized and sent off for rabies testing. If it is positive, the person will go through a series of expensive shots. This is protocol for any RVS animal that bites someone, whether it is exhibiting any symptoms or not.
Do NOT touch a rabies vector species without gloves!! The most common animals to carry rabies are bats, raccoons, skunks, & foxes but this doesn’t mean they all have rabies. All animals can carry mites, fleas, & diseases so wear gloves anyway. And unless you are actually Snow White, a wild animal that approaches you needs help. Proceed with caution and follow the advice of wildlife professionals.
Facts: Putting water in a birds mouth can literally cause them to choke to death. Not all birds eat worms. Domesticating a fawn by bringing it in your home to “help it” is a death sentence. If you give a baby squirrel or bunny the wrong kind of milk, you can make it so ill that it will take days for a rehabber to stabilize. Baby opossums do not suckle; they are attached to a feeding tube inside their mom so you can’t feed with a bottle. Some animals require rehydration before they can be fed. Turtles live in a 1 mile radius their entire lives. Baby birds can get food lodged in their throat and suffocate. If you use the wrong kind of syringe/nipple and feed a baby animal too fast or too much, it will aspirate and die. Ducklings can drown. You cannot judge if it’s a venomous snake by its head or pupil shape. The animal that you just found doesn’t “like you”, he’s in shock and afraid to move. Baby animals can’t have breast milk. Everything we tell you is for a reason.
If you’re still reading this, thank you. Today was a scary day. We hope our human friend has a clean bill of health. We ❤️ our wildlife and we ❤️ our wildlife loving humans. Today’s incident was avoidable. This post isn’t to criticize; it’s to teach someone who may not know so we can avoid another incident tomorrow.
xoxo, GWN

PLEASE DON'T BUY THESE PLANTS IF YOU HAVE DOGS OR CATS ...

This is a copy and paste,
All dog owners need to know this. All parts of the Sago Palm can kill your dog if ingested.
Complete Care Animal Hospital
I’m on a plant kick lately and I’ve been cruising the local stores for new stuff. Here is another example of a deadly plant available at Lowes this weekend. This is a Sago Palm. Ingestion of ANY part of this by dogs or cats is toxic and often results in liver failure and death. The seeds are the most toxic part.
If you have pets, do NOT buy this plant. I really wish there was signage by these warning pet owners of their toxicity.

I'm no cook, I leave that kinda stuff to Mom, but I was watchin' her lookin' at stuff; O. M. G., I think she's buyin' a thing to make Puppucinos. There was a little movie, and it showed a thing that made white poofy stuff, and she asked me if I think we need it. What da fluff did she think I was gonna say? Heck Yeah. So anyway, I guess if she buys it from some pampered guy named Chef, it helps the AHDRO folks help more Collies like they did me, so the way I see it, everybuddy wins. Check it out ... Maybe that guy Chef will have some cool stuff for you like he did Me and Mom. 🐾🐾🐾 https://www.pamperedchef.com/party/ahdrofohio?fbclid=IwAR2fRFo7WJ8RMQcye3uy78TiiwWdZMIcmWZCZefTaDukNhI2lylEZzbOWVE_aem_AauI9fvDT3cTgKP9nVTE7d2VMrOtXnI9mpr0Zw1pIIv_hejGvN1byPOPDEDS8bpUa1s5Z9N7gNi8XYbpQWZKIil5

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.
Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site,
This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

*Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp .asp>
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

**PLEASE PASS THIS ON**

Thanks for takin' the time to read this,

Did You Know.. March Is National Poison Prevention Month
Every year the Animal Poison Control Center releases a list of the most common toxicity calls it received over the past year. They are always pretty common, accessible items. Always treat you pets as if you have perpetual toddlers in the home. Even several pieces of sugar free gum taken out of a purse tossed on a chair could end in disaster. Keep one of the Pet Poison phone numbers handy. ASPCA's is 888-426-4435 and the Pet Poison Helpline is 855-764-7661. Yes, there will be a charge when you call these numbers, however the amount of information they have available is far beyond what even most emergency veterinarians can gather in enough time to decide how to best treat your pet. It is often recommended to call one of these hotlines first, even while on the way to your vet or emergency center. The poison centers can calculate if the amount ingested is a true concern, and if so, will come up with a specific treatment plan as to what should and should not be done with specific toxins. Calling one of these hotlines may even save you a very expensive ER visit. And if your pet does need emergency treatment, precious time is saved because the vet will know exactly what needs done. A few quick tips...never induce vomiting unless told to do so, do not be afraid to tell the vet if recreational drugs are a possibility-they are only trying to help your pet, and keep all those Easter baskets out of reach this week.
