Dogs are often attracted to shiny lures and tasty bait, which can lead to fish hooks becoming lodged in their mouths, esophagus, or stomachs. In some instances, dogs have accidentally ingested fish hooks hidden inside discarded fish heads. Cats and dogs may also occasionally sustain paw injuries from stepping on fish hooks.

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District: TX DSHS has issued a Health Alert, advising clinicians to test for the parasite Cyclospora in patients presenting with diarrheal illness lasting for more than a few days or that is accompanied with severe anorexia or fatigue. Clinicians should order ova and parasite (O&P) testing on stool samples submitted by symptomatic patients, using an acid-fast stain, modified safranin (hot) stain and/or UV autofluorescence screen with specific orders for Cyclospora. Infections may also be detected by PCR. Because of intermittent shedding, obtaining 3 stool specimens taken at least 24 hours apart is optimal, as a single negative sample does not exclude diagnosis.
Report confirmed cases to the 24/7 Metro Health Epidemiology line at 210-207-8876 or fax to 210-207-2007.
