“My dogs not food motivated”

Usually when we hear this we have a dog that is over fed, free feeding, and or you’re using food as a bridge to behavior. The reason you are stuck grabbing treats for obedience is because you taught your dog that the sight of food is the signal for behavior.

Most studies revolving around animal behavior use animals that are hungry. This is because it is NATURAL for a smart animal to put EFFORT into finding food. Whether they hunt or are scavenging, the hunger creates effort.

This doesn’t mean starve your animals. It means that if you offer your dog food out of hand in your own house with 0 distractions, and they are not willing to eat it, they are not hungry. If you have to force feed your dog treats to get them to stop barking this isn’t a reward, and they are not hungry.

If you want to make progress with your dog you have to understand how to nurture natural instincts and behaviors. Every interaction with your dog reinforces something whether you like it or not. Positive reinforcement doesn’t simply mean more treats makes things better.

“They are not doing it to you, they are doing it for them”

YOUR PUPPY IS NOT ACTIVELY THINKING ABOUT PULLING YOU. They are exploring, sniffing, doing what dogs DO. They will continue to do that until you show them a new job description. Obedience doesn’t exist until it’s created. You’ll have dogs more interested in cooperating with you, but you most likely won’t have a dog who immediately does everything you want.

When someone is doing something to you, it’s thought out and personal. When someone is doing something FOR themselves it has nothing to do with you. When you mix these 2 things up it’s your ego preventing progress.

This is important because when you have a dog you may be blessed and never have to lift a leash and have the perfect dog OR you’ll have to do what the majority of people need to do and work with your dog WITH INTENTION.

Correlation does not imply causation.

A lot of people will tell you to prevent resource guarding you need to establish yourself as the alpha, make your dog wait for food, and touch them a lot while they’re eating to desensitize them.

You don’t need to do this. It’s highly likely that people who have had “success” with these methods most likely had a dog that wasn’t going to be that way anyway. Simply because something seems effective, doesn’t mean it is!

Resource guarding in a lot of cases is determined by genetics and personality. Even doing all the “right” things you may end up with a dog who is aggressive, fearful, timid, or resource guards.

Our dogs are not made of glass. Besides being your cuddle buddy they have generations of instincts embedded in them. Hunting, burrowing, retrieving, guarding, herding, biting, barking, and many behaviors were built into dogs. Our jobs as owners is to nurture and build resilience.

A resilient dog is a dog who is comfortable in various environments. A resilient dog is a problem solver that can adapt. A resilient dog is created by a combination of genetics, and upbringing. RAISE A RESILIENT DOG!

You can take them to parks, stores, on hiking trails with confidence knowing you can keep them safe because you are in tune with one another. A companion is responsive to you.
