Meet Jovie, a young #labradorretriever that has been coming to us for drop-off training since she was about 5 months old. She has been very leggy her entire puppy hood and her humans wanted her to have a strong foundation of body awareness and coordination. Each week we work on various targeting skills, cooperative play, switching between toys and food, some tricks, and taking turns with another puppy just to name a few. Today we took her targeting skills to the next level by using small or narrow surfaces and maintaining good posture whole working on them. Sessions are kept short and fun because she's still a young growing puppy, but she's gretting so much better at managing her legs and body.

Chin rest is a skill we teach to all our dogs and in all our classes. Training a solid chin rest with duration is such a useful tool for SO MANY different things. We use it to get stillness or weight shift in fitness, to help bring dog a dog's arousal level, for cooperative care, and to get dogs to stand still got measuring just to name a few. Vers has a decent chin rest behavior when facing her handler but find it hard to do in other positions. Today for #nationaltrainyourdogmonth we worked on changing it up to have her facing forward with her handler standing next to her. This will be super useful when she enters #conformation shows and is being presented to the judge. We will work upvto longer duration and allowing handler and judge to reach toward her to position her better. What are you working on this week?

It's icy and cold so we brought our cavalettis inside. After creating a non-slip surface with a couple of yoga mats, everyone got a turn. We started with the littles, then introduced them to Vers for the first time, and ended with the border collies. I finally decided to change the way Vers feels about putting her collar on. Ever since she was a baby, she has always avoided getting her collar put on or pouted while it was happening. Our dogs wear collars with identification most of the time, so it isn't often that she's getting it put on. My plan going into this session for the #dotrtjanuarytrainingchallenge was to shape her approaching the collar and work up to putting it on. She would not move toward the collar, so I changed the plan and started to mark and reward as I reached toward her with the open collar. You can see a slight change in this short session, but not enough for me to start closing the collar. Poppy has discovered snuffle mats and asked that we share this cool enrichment tool with the world. She was unsure about this weird "food bowl" at first but once she figured out she got to use her nose to find the food in the mat she was all in! Does your dog like to snuffle?
