Led lights
Today, let's briefly talk about a few reasons why, in our opinion, LED lamps are the best choice for illuminating an aquarium 👌:
💡 LED lighting uses less energy than traditional light bulbs.
💡 LED bulbs are much more durable than traditional ones, which means they last longer without needing to be replaced.
💡 LEDs can emit a variety of colours and light intensities that mimic natural sunlight patterns, supporting plant growth and enhancing the aesthetics of your aquarium.
💡 LED diodes emit less heat than traditional light bulbs, helping to maintain a stable temperature in the aquarium.
💡 LED lighting fits any aquarium, from longer ones to nano tanks.

Luke
Here is another aquascaping artist 💪. Let us introduce you to Luke, also known as @rawaquascapes. On his profile, you can watch his projects evolve beautifully. Luke reports on how the new plants are growing and how new fish are settling in. This information is extremely valuable as it allows us to see changes and learn how to respond to them 🧐. It provides us with insightful aquatic knowledge, and for the artist himself, it serves as a kind of live notebook in which he monitors his progress right before your eyes.
We have surprise for you! 🤩 Luke has agreed to answer a few questions about his work. His responses may inspire you. Thanks, Luke!
◾️ Looking back at the beginning of your aquascaping experience, what was the toughest obstacle, and how did you overcome it?
👉 I have always been drawn to Dutch-style tanks 🇧🇶. However, the first Dutch-style tank I planted didn’t turn out as good as I had hoped because my tap water was incredibly hard. Switching to RO water significantly improved plant health and also helped maintain consistent water parameters over a long period.
◾️ What is impressive in aquascapes is the diversity of species. Could you point out a few plants or fish that you find particularly fascinating?
👉My favourite plant species for a long time now has been Bacopa Salzmannii Purple sg 💜. The colours of this species are incredible, and I've found it fairly easy to grow, too. I keep a lot of smaller fish species like emerald rasbora and galaxy rasbora, as my tanks are pretty small. Alongside them, I also have neo caridina shrimp.
◾️ Which part of building an aquascape brings you the most joy?
👉My favourite part of creating an aquascape is watching it mature over its lifetime and seeing plants and livestock thrive in the underwater art world I have created 🐟.
Java fern
Discover the resilient Java fern 🌱, a Southeast Asian native that thrives under the simplest of conditions. Its leathery leaves, marked by elegant wavy edges, cling gracefully to roots or rocks 🪵🪨. The Java fern effortlessly draws nutrients directly from the water around it, making it perfectly suited for sandy-bottomed tanks. With its preference for dim lighting 💡 and robust nature against fluctuating water conditions, this plant is a foolproof addition to any beginner's aquarium 🧑🎓.
Emersed-grown plants
Do you have emergent plants in your aquariums? 🌱Aquarium plants that grow partially submerged and partially above water are eye-catching due to their unique characteristics and because they offer abundant design possibilities. These plants can enhance the natural appearance of your aquatic world.
What's so special about them❔
These plants have root systems submerged under the water, while their leaves and flowers develop in the air, above the water column. This means they live simultaneously in two environments 😮, and the leaves that are above water may differ from those submerged. This adds a multi-dimensional aspect to the aquarium that many enthusiasts seek. Moreover, their growth above the waterline can help absorb nutrients and pollutants from the water. The effect? Greater control over algae and a healthier environment for plants and fish. Is having such plants easy?
As always, there are a few challenges to consider:
💧 Maintaining the correct level of humidity above the water surface.
🤗 These plants may require an acclimatization period when introduced to the aquarium.
🤓 A high level of planning and creativity is needed for the emergent part of the plants to thrive alongside their submerged counterparts.
Dutch Style
Discover the Dutch-style aquarium 🇳🇱 — where strategic plant placement creates a multi-dimensional and diverse underwater landscape! 🏞
Key elements include varied plant heights, vibrant colors, and textures that form a stunning visual depth. 🌱 Stem plants serve as a lush green backdrop, with bold reds providing dramatic focal points. A signature “street” path adds depth, guiding the viewer's gaze. Rocks 🪨 and wood 🪵 in Dutch aquariums mainly serve to anchor stem plants. The hardscape here plays a complementary, rather than a dominant role.

wood
How can you emphasize the natural look of your aquarium? 👉 Add driftwood to it! This element is a must-have for most aquascapes, giving them a real touch of nature. 💪
Why is it worth adding wood to your aquarium?
🤎 Helps achieve a naturalistic look for the tank.
🤎 Provides shelter and safe territory for fish and invertebrates.
🤎 Serves as a natural platform for plants; pieces of wood and roots allow for creative aquascaping projects.
🤎 Offers essential nutrients to some species of fish that nibble on it.
🤎 Wood can be an excellent breeding ground for fish and shrimp.
When choosing wood, pay attention to its type to ensure the safety and health of the fish. Not all types of wood are ideal for aquarium use. 🪵 Some can affect the water's chemical composition or decompose quickly once submerged.
Cyanobacteria
Have you ever battled with Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, in your aquarium? 🧐 This troublesome issue often recurs in many tanks. Despite their name, cyanobacteria are not true algae but bacteria that resemble algae because they form slimy, blue-green patches. 🦠 This unsightly layer can smother plants, substrate, and decorations. Its distinct color and texture, however, help aquarists to spot the issue easily.
🔑Key factors contributing to cyanobacteria growth include:
Excess nutrients,Poor water circulation,Inadequate lighting,Environments high in phosphates and nitrates (often from overfeeding or infrequent water changes).
Addressing these factors can significantly mitigate the risk of a cyanobacteria outbreak. But, if they do appear, here are some strategies:
🟢 Scrub your aquarium and decorations thoroughly during water changes
Introduce more plants to compete with the cyanobacteria for nutrients and light.
🟢 Quarantine new plants and fish before adding them to your main tank.
🟢 Fine-tune your CO2 injection.
🟢 Consider UV sterilizers.
For severe cases, chemical treatments may be necessary. ❗️ Follow instructions carefully to avoid harming beneficial flora and fauna.
Most importantly, maintaining healthy aquatic plants is crucial. 🌱 A well-planted tank absorbs excess nutrients and light, offering less for cyanobacteria to thrive on.
Remember, tackling cyanobacteria in your aquarium demands patience and might take time. For severe cyanobacteria issues, consulting with a fish breeder or an aquarist specialist is recommended.
Iwagumi Style
Immerse yourself in the disciplined and refined world of Iwagumi aquariums, ✨ where every element is a testament to the art of simplicity and elegance. ☺️ This style, deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics, challenges and rewards in equal measure. Here’s a concise guide to achieving the serene beauty of Iwagumi:
✅ Start with an odd number of stones; 🪨 three is often ideal. This encourages natural balance and flow.
✅ Carefully select each stone for its shape and texture. These elements are crucial for creating a sense of depth and perspective, making your aquarium feel like a slice of the natural world.
✅ Strive for naturalism. The goal is to mimic the effortless beauty of nature, achieving a scene that looks untouched by human hands.
✅ Balance and symmetry are your guiding principles. Arrange your stones to create a harmonious composition, with a thoughtful distribution of mass and space, inviting a sense of calm.
✅ Plants are essential in bringing vibrancy and color to the scene.
✅ Opt for low-growing varieties that evoke lush grasses or mossy expanses.
Creating an Iwagumi aquarium is more than just an exercise in aquatic design; it's a pursuit of harmony and tranquility. While the challenge of mastering this style is real, the reward is a breathtaking, peaceful aquatic landscape that serves as a living work of art in your space. 💪 Remember, patience and practice are key to unveiling the subtle elegance and tranquil beauty of your Iwagumi aquarium.

Co2
Explore the intriguing dynamics of a bustling aquarium where, despite a lively community of fish, the production of carbon dioxide (CO2) falls short of sustaining an optimal environment for aquatic plants 🌱.
This phenomenon highlights a crucial aspect of aquatic ecosystems: the natural production of CO2 through fish respiration alone is insufficient to meet the demands of most plant species for robust growth. 🐟 In the wild, ecosystems are impeccably balanced by nature, negating the need for human intervention.
However ☺️, within the artificial confines of our aquariums, stepping in to bolster CO2 levels becomes necessary. Without adequate CO2, plants struggle to assimilate nutrients effectively, leading to undesirable algae growth. Yet, there is a silver lining. Certain resilient plant species, such as Amazon Swords, Java Fern, and Cryptocoryne, can thrive even in lower CO2 conditions. 🫧 Enhancing CO2 levels, even for these adaptable plants, promises a more vibrant and thriving aquatic garden. 🌿

Diffusers
Are you on a quest to achieve the perfect CO2 distribution in your aquarium? 🫧 The secret weapon is a top-notch diffuser, seamlessly integrating CO2 into your planted paradise. 🤩 Let's dive into the two types of diffusers that promise to elevate your aquarium's vibrancy:
🟢 In-Tank Diffusers: Ideal for aquariums with internal filtration systems, like hang-on-back (HOB) or sponge filters 🧽. Strategically position it near the flow outlet for widespread CO2 delivery, ensuring every plant gets its fair share of this essential nutrient. And a fun bonus – the mesmerizing dance of microbubbles throughout your tank! 🫧
🟢 Inline Diffusers: Tailored for tanks with external filtration, these diffusers mix CO2 with water outside the tank, ensuring a sleek aquascape without the clutter of extra equipment inside. The result? An efficiently carbonated environment for your plants, hidden from view 🧐.
🔑 Maintenance Tip: The key to a diffuser's success lies in its cleanliness. Every 3-4 weeks, give it a spa day in a water and bleach solution to keep it performing at its best. Just make sure to rinse it well afterwards – no bleach smell should linger – before reintroducing it to your aquarium setup. Your aquatic plants will show their gratitude through lush, vibrant growth. 🌱
