Covering Your Aquarium: Essential or Optional?
In the world of aquariums, the debate over adding a lid or cover is ongoing. While open tanks mimic natural environments, there are compelling reasons to consider covering yours:
1️⃣ Minimises water evaporation, helping maintain stable levels
2️⃣ Controls temperature fluctuations for consistent aquatic health
3️⃣ Prevents gas build-up and keeps undesirable odors at bay
4️⃣ Ensures your fish stay safe inside the tank
5️⃣ Filters out dust particles, contributing to clearer water quality
6️⃣ Offers a convenient hiding place for equipment and cables
7️⃣ Provides added safety, especially if you have curious kids or pets
The decision ultimately depends on your setup and preferences. Share your thoughts and experiences with us in the comments section or DMs!

Introducing Daniel van Hengel, [IG: aquascapebarendrecht], a passionate aquascaping enthusiast from Barendrecht, Netherlands, near Rotterdam. Daniel discovered aquascaping in 2020 during a challenging period for his health, finding solace and creativity in the art form. Inspired by Filipe Oliveira, he began his journey from scratch, developing a passion for rare aquatic plants like Rotala macrandra, Narrow Leaf and unique Bucephalandras, chosen for their vibrant colours and intricate growth patterns. 🍀
Daniel believes in creating natural and balanced habitats for his aquatic friends. He carefully selects fish and hardscape materials in odd numbers to mimic nature’s harmony, blending form, colour, and structure. His favourites include Emerald Rasbora, Rasbora Galaxy, Otocinclus, Blue Neon, Dario Dario, Pygmy Corydoras, and various shrimp species. 🦐
Along his journey, Daniel has learned valuable lessons in patience, especially in selecting and arranging hardscape materials and allowing plants to flourish naturally for their vivid hues. His pursuit of perfection once led to a humorous moment when he realised he was designing a scape too large for its intended space!

High-tech aquariums involve using advanced equipment like powerful LED lights, CO2 injection systems, and regular dosing of liquid fertilizers. This setup is ideal for achieving lush, rapid plant growth and vibrant, intricate aquascapes. 💡🌿
Conversely, low-tech aquariums rely on basic lighting, no CO2 injection, and minimal fertilization. They are easier to maintain but result in slower plant growth and simpler layouts.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started with a high-tech aquarium:
1️⃣ Powerful LED lighting: Proper lighting promotes lush, healthy growth and brings out the vibrant colors of your aquatic plants.
2️⃣ CO2 injection system: Adding a CO2 system to your aquarium enhances plant growth and health. CO2 injection in a high-tech setup ensures your plants get the carbon dioxide they need to thrive.
3️⃣ Advanced Filtration: A high-tech aquarium requires advanced filtration to maintain crystal clear water and a healthy environment for your fish and plants.
4️⃣ Nutrient-rich substrate: Choosing a nutrient-rich substrate is essential for providing nutrients to your plants' roots.
5️⃣ Monitoring tools: Keeping a close eye on your water parameters is vital in a high-tech aquarium. Invest in reliable test kits to monitor for example pH, and other essential parameters.
✨BONUS TIP: Be patient and observe how your aquarium evolves. Make adjustments as necessary.

Ever wondered how frequently you should clean your aquarium? The answer varies based on several factors.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
❓How often should I change the water? Aim to replace 20% to 30% of your tank water no more than once a week. If you have fewer fish, you can do it less frequently.
❓Where should I get clean water? Most aquarium enthusiasts use tap water and let it sit for 24 hours to allow chemicals like chlorine to evaporate. For larger tanks, a tap water conditioner can be used to neutralize chlorine and other harmful substances.
❓Should I remove the fish when changing the water? There's no need to remove the fish since you won't be draining the tank completely. Trying to catch the fish can be more stressful for them than cleaning around them carefully.
✂️Essential Tools: algae scraper, filter media, sponge, towel, scissors, gravel vacuum, testing kit
Steps to Clean Your Aquarium:
1️⃣ Test the water quality (always check levels of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates).
2️⃣ Remove debris and algae (use an algae scraper to clean the tank walls, lid, decorations, and rocks. Do not use soap or detergents).
3️⃣ Trim the plants (remove dead leaves and trim overgrown plants with scissors).
4️⃣ Vacuum the substrate (remove fish waste, leftover food, and rotting plants along with old tank water and excess nitrates using a gravel vacuum).
5️⃣ Clean the filter media (rinse it in a bucket of recently removed tank water to preserve beneficial bacteria).
6️⃣ Refill the water.
7️⃣ Restart your devices (plug your equipment back in to complete the process).
You might notice right after cleaning that something is wrong. Do not worry, everything is good. Give your filter about an hour and the water should clear up nicely.

Discover the Fascinating Betta Fish! 🤩
Betta fish, also known as Siamese fighting fish, are a stunning addition to any aquarium with their vivid colours and graceful fins. These beautiful fish are a popular choice for families and beginners due to their easy care and breeding simplicity. Betta fish possess a unique labyrinth organ, allowing them to breathe air and survive short periods out of water by inhaling oxygen from the atmosphere.
To ensure your Betta thrives, keep the water temperature between 76-82°F and provide a tank that's at least 5 gallons. Enhance their habitat with plants and hiding spots, and maintain their diet with Betta pellets and occasional treats. An aquarium cover is a must-have to prevent them from jumping out.
Though Betta fish typically enjoy solitude, they can share a larger tank with compatible, peaceful species.

Have you ever wondered if plants can grow in sand? Although sand is denser and has fewer nutrients than aqua soil, it’s definitely possible with the right plants and proper care!
Benefits of a sandy substrate:
💡Provides natural, attractive appearance
💡Promotes natural behaviour of certain fish species e.g. Corydoras

Best plants for sandy substrates:
🌱Cabomba: Grows well in sand with high light, CO2, and liquid fertiliser.
🌱Dwarf Hygro: Ideal for beginners; absorbs nutrients from the water and doesn’t require a strong root system.
🌱Hornwort: Fast-growing and low-maintenance; absorbs nutrients from the water column, making it perfect for beginners.
🌱Amazon Swords: Has strong roots; use root tabs when planting in sand.
🌱Cryptocoryne: Excellent for mid-ground; needs root tabs and liquid fertiliser.
Want to have lush plants in a sandy substrate? Just remember, root tabs are crucial for success! 🙂

• VARIETY IN STYLES AND TEXTURES: Hardscape materials can transform the theme and visual appeal of your aquascape. It's both an art and science. Whether you are going for a natural look or a more stylized design, the right hardscape can elevate your aquascape to the next level. 🔥

Today, let's briefly talk about a few reasons why, in our opinion, LED lamps are the best choice for illuminating an aquarium 👌:

💡 LED lighting uses less energy than traditional light bulbs.
💡 LED bulbs are much more durable than traditional ones, which means they last longer without needing to be replaced.
💡 LEDs can emit a variety of colours and light intensities that mimic natural sunlight patterns, supporting plant growth and enhancing the aesthetics of your aquarium.
💡 LED diodes emit less heat than traditional light bulbs, helping to maintain a stable temperature in the aquarium.
💡 LED lighting fits any aquarium, from longer ones to nano tanks.

How do you illuminate your aquarium 🫵 ?

Dive with us to meet the beautiful and unique CICHLID! 🐟

Cichlids are known for their assertive attitude and territorial instincts. These independent and lively aquarium fish like to dig and reorganize their surroundings, so they require plants with strong roots that can withstand their spirited behaviour🌱. Placing live plants in an aquarium with cichlids has many benefits, improving both the appearance and ecological characteristics of the tank. You simply need to choose the right species that can cope with these mischievous creatures. Cichlids can adapt to various aquarium conditions, and the appropriate CO2 🫧 level promotes the lush, healthy development of plants that are part of their environment. This is essential for creating a balanced and natural-looking waterscape.

🤩 These multi-coloured fish need a unique territory created for them, but they reciprocate with extremely interesting activity that can be observed for hours 🧐.

Here is another aquascaping artist 💪. Let us introduce you to Luke, also known as . On his profile, you can watch his projects evolve beautifully. Luke reports on how the new plants are growing and how new fish are settling in. This information is extremely valuable as it allows us to see changes and learn how to respond to them 🧐. It provides us with insightful aquatic knowledge, and for the artist himself, it serves as a kind of live notebook in which he monitors his progress right before your eyes.

We have surprise for you! 🤩 Luke has agreed to answer a few questions about his work. His responses may inspire you. Thanks, Luke!

◾️ Looking back at the beginning of your aquascaping experience, what was the toughest obstacle, and how did you overcome it?
👉 I have always been drawn to Dutch-style tanks 🇧🇶. However, the first Dutch-style tank I planted didn’t turn out as good as I had hoped because my tap water was incredibly hard. Switching to RO water significantly improved plant health and also helped maintain consistent water parameters over a long period.

◾️ What is impressive in aquascapes is the diversity of species. Could you point out a few plants or fish that you find particularly fascinating?
👉My favourite plant species for a long time now has been Bacopa Salzmannii Purple sg 💜. The colours of this species are incredible, and I've found it fairly easy to grow, too. I keep a lot of smaller fish species like emerald rasbora and galaxy rasbora, as my tanks are pretty small. Alongside them, I also have neo caridina shrimp.

◾️ Which part of building an aquascape brings you the most joy?
👉My favourite part of creating an aquascape is watching it mature over its lifetime and seeing plants and livestock thrive in the underwater art world I have created 🐟.
