Pet sitting (cat sitting and/or dog sitting) currently available for South Kansas City, Waldo, Brookside, Leawood, Mission, Mission Hills, Prairie Village areas. I have worked with rescues and shelters for 25+ years and am familiar with dog and cat body language. I've taken care of a variety of special needs pets including fearful, blind, deaf, and epileptic and have patience to let your animals t

ell me how they need to be cared for. I understand medical cases and how important routine is for the animals and their humans. Dog translator (Dog training)Do you have a puppy that you are struggling to get the basics of potty training and commands? Is your puppy's favorite chew toy the nearest human? Do you have a new addition (maybe you adopted recently) and you're not sure where to start as your new pup doesn't listen to you? Maybe it's a dog you've had for a while and suddenly there are issues you didn't have before? I know how to read dogs and hear them and what they need and can tailor their training to them and what your house needs. Every dog and house is different so not all training. I'll help you to be an effective communicator with your pup!

Please keep your pets safe. Food scraps can cause emergency vet visits, best to not chance it.
Also, visitors can be overwhelming, even to the most social of pets. Keep them safe, even if it means putting them behind a gate or in a spare room with the door closed. Having a collar with tags on your pets in case they slip out an open door can get your loved one home quicker and safely than without.

Having your dog at a healthy weight is as important as it is for humans to be at a healthy weight. When you think of a 10 pound dog that's 5 lbs overweight, it may not seem like much but it is 50% overweight. That's a lot of extra weight on their joints, organs and shortens their life. If you are unsure if your dog is a healthy weight, please ask your veterinarian and if needed help them take some off.

Clocks go back an hour tonight. It's also a great time to check smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide detector batteries. Another helpful tip is to have someone watch the pets when you test them to see where they go, if you have several pets, this may mean it's time to recruit the kids or check the cameras to help.

This rescue and training facility works with dogs with extreme behavioral issues as well as the usual pet dogs. The dogs in their care aren't always the easiest to just place wherever there's an open foster or kennel.
If you can donate or share, it will be greatly appreciated.

Our worst nightmare came true last night when our Raytown facility caught fire. All the dogs and humans on site are safe and sound. Considerable damage to the on-site apartment occurred.

We will be contacting each person who has dogs in our care this morning but didn't want people to over react if they came upon the information.

Assistance with immediate expenses are needed. Director Melody Huff will be on site soon and other trainers are there now cleaning up and caring for animals

You can text us for more info.

Such wise words here! Owners have a lot more power than a trainer.

Need help? We can help you to understand your part of the training with your dog! www.lapskc.com

So few owners and trainers fully understand this dynamic. Owners think trainers have magical powers, and trainers are often happy to perpetuate this myth. (“The second the trainer took the leash all the problem behavior simply vanished!”)

While this isn’t always the case, it often is. And while it may seem like magic Jedi skills, more often than not it’s due the combination of the trainer being a novel presence—which causes the dog to be more focused on figuring out the trainer rather than engaging in poor behavior—and the fact the trainer has a neutral association.

Put simply, whatever your presence predicts is the association you’ve built with your dog. For most owners that association is extremely lopsided and unhealthy. You’ve taught your dog that your presence predicts play, affection, freedom, excitement, food, walks/drives—and often very poor behavior, like territoriality, reactivity, possessiveness, brattiness, disrespect, and chaos.

What most owners haven’t done is create a healthy, balanced association. One where you of course predict the good things in life, but also just as equally predict the balancing factors of firm rules, consistent structure, high levels of accountability (a “healthy fear”), and confident leadership when challenging situations arise.

It’s precisely this careful, smart, and selfless balance of what we share with our dogs which either creates a healthy association, or not.

And because almost everyone very easily shares all the fun, self-rewarding stuff, the biggest hack to resetting your toxic relationship is something most will find absolutely unacceptable, unsophisticated, unhealthy, and ultimately undoable…sharing valuable consequences (gasp, punishment!) for poor choices and unhealthy responses.

Why does this create such profound shifts in your dog? Because it starts the process of resetting the association; it starts the process of your dog viewing you in a more balanced fashion, healthy fashion. It starts the process of you becoming a multi-dimensional association. Ultimately, it shares the critical component of your relationship interactions you’ve omitted, which have created this lopsided, toxic dynamic in the first place.

You don’t have to like it, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s almost certainly the reason you (as an owner) are stuck, and you (as a trainer) are unable to help your clients to the degree you so deeply desire to be able to.

PS, the amount of times I’ve seen “the lights go on” with a dog after their owner corrects some nonsense for the first in a valuable fashion are countless. For most, if they can step up to this challenge, it’s the beginning of a beautiful, and healthy transformation. For those unable, it means the continuation of all that came before, regardless of training.

Dogs don't have the same emotions as humans. It is very coincidental at times that you do or don't do something and they do or don't do something that we can put a human emotion to as if they are getting back at us for example. There's often a very 'dog' reason for their actions and this is a small example of why they sometimes do what they do.

Have questions about your dog and their behavior? We can talk!

A good reminder that you can confuse your dog without even trying. Give them a moment to think when you ask for them to do something. Make sure you are consistent with the wording and the praise when they've done what you ask.
If they're in a 'stay' or 'wait' don't keep repeating it or you will confuse them. Instead practice in short bursts, releasing them before they break it themselves. Extend the time as their skills improve.

Today Hikari and Rachelle practice the art of doing nothing, part of lifestyle training. So many times in training teaching dogs to just do nothing and relax is overlooked, but often desired. We must teach dogs to be able to just stop and enjoy the world around them. In doing so, the owners may find some peace as well as this is hard for many people too! At the park Hikari just laid and watched the hustle and bustle of the people, dogs, kids, joggers, and strollers and enjoyed it. This skill is important when Rachelle wants to talk to someone, or if they're at a store and Rachelle is looking at things as well as just turning off the energy at home.

If you need help training your dog to have good manners at home or in public, we can help!

Having two happy and well rounded dogs is possible, but it's gonna take work!
17/08/2023

Having two happy and well rounded dogs is possible, but it's gonna take work!

DOUBLE TROUBLE
The challenges of raising two dogs together.
The problem behaviours that are commonly seen in dogs that are raised together is known as “litter mate syndrome” or “litter mate dependency”, but these behaviours are not specific to dogs from the same litter and can occur with any pair of dogs that are raised together.

These behavioural terms have been a topic of discussion for some time as to whether they really exist and are also not recognised as a “syndrome” by veterinary behaviourists or other experts.

If this “syndrome” isn’t real, then why do we see a pattern of this behaviour in dogs raised together?

These behaviours are more related to the challenges and time commitment involved in ensuring that each dog develops as an individual and reaches their full potential.

Raising just one puppy can be frustrating, challenging and time-consuming. Housetraining, socialisation, habituation, management, mental and physical stimulation, training, adolescence, etc is challenging enough with just one, let alone two.

Some people may believe that it’s a great idea to get two pups at the same time - they will be able to keep each other company when you’re not around; they won’t be bored; they’ll have each other to play with; they will always have a friend; both children in the family can have one; the breeder said it’s a good idea, you just couldn’t bear to leave the other one behind….and more, but this can lead to long term problems if not handled correctly.

Think of it as having twins. Parents of twins are advised to separate them into different classrooms when they start nursery school to help them develop as individuals and reach their full potential without one child over shadowing the other. Parents are advised to do all they can to ensure that they raise two separate individuals, confident within themselves and not reliant or overly dependent on one another. Dogs are not people, but a similar principle applies.

Yes, some pups raised together may form healthy human bonds and develop into well-adjusted, confident dogs without too much intervention from us, but it’s important to be aware of what could go wrong and how to prevent problems from developing.

11/08/2023

Thank you for sharing these important reminders for pet safety in the heat. It's crucial to consider these factors when determining whether it's safe for your pets to be outside in warm weather. Here's a summarized version of your reminders:

Shorter Snout Breeds: If your dog has a shorter snout, such as a pug or Boston Terrier, they may have difficulty breathing in hot weather. Add a point to the safety assessment chart.

Overweight Dogs: Overweight dogs can have a harder time handling warmer temperatures. Consider adding a point to the safety assessment chart if your dog is overweight.

Older Dogs: Older dogs might struggle to move around and find shade. If your dog is elderly, factor this into their outdoor activity. Add a point to the safety assessment chart.

Puppies: Puppies are more susceptible to heat due to their still-developing systems. If your pup is younger than 6 months, take extra precautions and add a point to the safety assessment chart.

Humidity: High humidity can make temperatures feel even hotter. If you find it uncomfortable outside due to humidity, it's likely uncomfortable for your dog too.

Using these points in the safety assessment chart will help you make informed decisions about your pet's outdoor activities during hot weather. Remember to prioritize your pets' well-being and take necessary precautions to keep them safe and comfortable.
