When life takes an unfortunate turn, sometimes you just need a little reassurance and rest. Cookie is back with BARC due to the rapid decline in her owner’s health and his inability to continue to care for her. Like us, the feelings of safety and belonging are an essential and foundational need and initially Cookie was panicked😢. We slowed down, took some deep breaths and helped Cookie process those big and scary feelings. This time together reestablished Cookie’s trust that things will be OK. Cookie is as sweet as her name indicates and we are hopeful her stay with us will be short and for the last time. Happy Friends Friday! Griffin enjoyed meeting new friends this week and did an impressive job balancing co-existing through exploration with a bit of play. He thrives with canine companionship and this has helped boost his confidence. Griff is more than ready for his forever home. Griffin playfully shows off his leash and exploration skills while enjoying a forest walk on a long lead, encouraging independence while also incorporating his foundational skills. You will see throughout the walk he does a nice job checking in, waiting, providing recall when asked, accepting redirection of direction and stopping to smell the smells. He has started doing that little hop/pounce which makes us all smile and laugh, a response he enjoys. With the gift of a nice and warmer day, Griffin went to the college green for exploration of a new place. Typically this would be very frightening but we have been working on activities to increase sniffy behaviors because if a dog is sniffing then they’re not engaged with the trigger, usually you can’t do both at the same time! Griffin saw different stimuli that could’ve resulted in fear-based behavior, but took it in and continued on. It was a successful outing, which shows this brave boy only continues to grow his confidence. Griff is available for adoption. The rain did not stop today’s adventures. Griffin enjoyed a car ride looking at the holiday decorations uptown and then we ended the outing with some great smells at @townsendcoffeebar where Dave was most helpful in allowing Griffin to explore and co-exist. With a bit of time, Griff’s comfort and curiosity level increased and he wanted to go back in the shop for another opportunity to have a good sniff. Here’s Harriet! This sweet American Bulldog, Boxer mix is about 4 years old and is more than ready for the peace and quiet of home. While the shelter environment is stressful, Harriet finds happiness in spending time with people and playing with stuffies, while also taking them for a walk🤣 as she works on loose leash skills. When Griffin makes a friend it is forever! Meeting new people is the main goal of his plan because honestly, he has mastered all of his other goals☺️. Griff is finding enjoyment with this final goal and not only are his friends safe and fun, but they also have potentially functional roles in his life. His first friend in the video is of course his teacher, Nikki. Nikki and Mel will continue to support Griff as he adjusts and transitions into his forever home. Next in line is Nina, who is no stranger in Athens as she is one of the greatest groomers and we are sure you’ve seen her or even have been fortunate to have her services at @friendlypawsathens. Griff sure looks forward to her visits and walks! Finally, Mary first met Griffin at @athensvetclinic as she is a Team Member of the practice and assisted with his most recent visit. Therefore to pair a positive association with the vet, we want someone that he knows and regards as safe, so these visits include an element of social reinforcement as well. His connection and attraction to Mary took no time at all! Sweet Boy = Rufus. Talk about an affectionate and gorgeous young dog. The video captures his sweet spirit perfectly.
