Some FAQs we have gotten recently about veterinary medical manipulation (chiropractic):
❓How do I know if my horse should have an exam and adjustment?
✅ Horses of all ages, disciplines (or retirement) can benefit from medical manipulation. The best way to know would be to schedule an exam, and then we could decide as a team from there based on dynamic exam and palpation!
❓How often should my horse be adjusted?
✅ This answer completely depends on your horse’s current needs and work load, underlying issues, etc. It is common for many performance/sport horses to have at least quarterly adjustments and frequency can be adjusted from there based on how they respond and maintain their bodies. Our very hard working athletes may be initially seen every couple weeks, then monthly as needed, with the goal to get them on a maintenance schedule that maintains their comfort, health and mobility.
❓What about other treatment modalities? (Acupuncture, myofascial work, PEMF, etc.)
✅ We are big believers in a multimodal approach! Again, every horse’s needs are unique to them and may change over time.
We often recommend massage or acupuncture for those horses that have significant muscle tension and soreness. A joint cannot be adjusted if it is completely surrounded by painful, tense muscle. Also, adjustments will hold much better without excess muscle tension. We love to work as a team with other equine professionals to keep your athlete performing their best!🏇

🐎💨 Lameness & Performance Exams
These are whole horse exams that focus on the musculoskeletal system and evaluation of movement.
Veterinarians use this type of exam for a range of cases from healthy athletes to evaluate for performance to see if they have any underlying soreness before it becomes a problem, pre-purchase exams, and of course horses with obvious lameness or performance issues.
It generally will include a physical and musculoskeletal palpation exam, hoof tester response, and likely flexion exam (like you see in the reel!). Of course we wish we could ask horses where they’re sore, but since they can’t verbalize their aches and pains, we have to tease the information out based on feeling, appearance, movement, range of motion, response to flexions, etc.
From there, we may recommend further diagnostics (response to nerve blocks for lameness localization, radiographs, ultrasound, etc). Or if it’s something simple, treatments may be recommended like Adequan/Legend/Zycosan, shoeing changes, joint injections (we have many options these days from steroids, autobiologics, polyacrylamide gels, equine amnion, you name it!), body work/chiropractic, physical therapy, etc.

Emergencies: Are you prepared?😨
Having an established relationship with a local equine veterinarian is critical to ensuring emergency care for your horses. We’re sure you’ve heard of the crisis of equine veterinarians in this country in the last few years, and it is projected to worsen as there are more vets retiring than coming into the profession out of school.
Having a good relationship with your veterinarian means you can also have emergency medications and supplies on hand, and someone to text or call with questions! We appreciate the relationships we have with our clients and never mind answering questions and triaging as best we can to determine what needs to be seen ASAP versus what can wait. That’s what we’re here for!
