Bounty is ground driving really well! I’m pretty sure he’s done it before, so most of what I’m doing is just a reminder of controls, and a continuation of him learning to be brave. The main thing I’m working on with him is desensitization. He can be very reactive, so he is learning that it’s ok to stop and take a breath before I start having him drag or pull anything.

Bounty is learning that not everything is a scary monster in preparation to pull the carriage! It’s important for me to take my time to build his confidence and desensitize him since he can be very reactive. He is definitely the type of horse who takes flight before thinking about what is spooking him. My goal is to teach him to stop and think before reacting, and after he understands that we can get to the driving part 😁

Trail rides are a great way to test out all the work and training you’ve done with your horse. Today Fin practiced staying on the path while looking around 😂
It’s common for young and/or inexperienced horses to swerve all over the place, following their head to try and look at everything. Problems arise when they unintentionally bump into other horses, knock your knees into trees, or clothes-line you on a branch, among many other undesirable and potentially dangerous circumstances. However, curiosity is something that is good to have in a horse because that means they are thinking before reacting, examining before spooking or ignoring. For example, I want my horses to be cautious of snakes, but not terrified. Like many things, striking a balance is the key to success!

@kayylaajeann and I went on a trail ride over the weekend! She rode my horse, Fergie, while I rode Finley. Fin is still pretty green and he LOVES going on trails. He was excited to see the trailer because he has learned that it is both safe, and typically means that he will get to go on an adventure. I’m looking forward to the day that Kayla will be ready to ride him off-property!
This is a clip of us riding over a bridge, he sniffed while walking, but didn’t hesitate behind hoods fearless leader Fergie lol

Today we worked on working around other horses. Now that we have controls, it is time to work around the paddocks to prevent Tango from thinking that they are a place of unconditional rest thereby creating a herd or pasture sour horse. It’s good to work horses in all areas of a property so they don’t become distracted by the thought of rest, food, or their buddies. They should learn that when they are working they need to focus and listen, no matter where they are or where their buddies are. This helps to create a well rounded horse who can be taken anywhere and not become distracted. I think that this is especially important for a stallion to learn because then he will understand when it is and is not acceptable to act studly. When we are being handled and worked, we are calm, cool, and focused. When we are covering we can be studly. Consistency and clear expectations go a long way.

Today it’s been exactly 6 weeks since I started training Tango to drive. Today was also the second time that he pulled the carriage with me in the drivers seat instead of on the ground. Tango went from being a belligerent stallion who would knock someone over or into a wall to get what he wanted to a calm, respectful, and trusting gentleman. He might give a small nicker while walking past a talkative mare in season, but will stay calm, not pulling or ignoring his handler. I’m grateful to be on this journey with him and am certain that my work with him will set him up for success wherever his life may take him. For now though, we will continue to master the carriage together 👍🏻

We are learning to pull a little weight with some little squeaky wheels. He’s doing really well. We go over clay, grass, dirt, and gravel for all the different possible noises! Such a good stallion 😁

Don’t let him fool you, he had a full freak out a few minutes before this. But after his initial fear response, he realized that everything was ok and got right into a rhythm.

Day 2 of driving training! Today Tango ground drove like he’s been doing it for years. It’s nice when a horse seems to like what you’re teaching them.

Day 1 of driving training! Tango did really well, had his little stallion moment, but got over it pretty quickly. I lunged him with all the gear on first, and then put a bridle on and learned how to walk and steer from the ground. It’s all about baby steps and building a strong foundation ✌🏻

Figure eights, figure eights, figure eights. I believe figure eights are ones if best exercises you can do with your horse. Walking, jogging, loping, and backing a horse with this pattern is great for teaching and practicing control, balance, and spatial awareness for both horse and rider. You can really learn to feel your horse’s movement and learn how to most effectively move with them.

Working with this beautiful boy has been a blast. We’ve gone from needing a stud chain and a crop to walk nicely. We have graduated to no chain, a loose lead, and a crop. This stallion will have some manners yet 😂
