The Tenth Life The Tenth Life is a no-kill cat rescue located in the Dayton, OH area. We have been in operation since 1984 and have rescued thousands of cats.
(13)

Many people have asked us how The Tenth Life was started. We, Jerry and Marsha, started The Tenth Life in November 1984. We had volunteered with another organization for about five years when we saw the need to start a no-kill cat facility in this area. We dreamed of an organization with a full-time veterinarian and health care facility to provide all of the medical needs for the cats in-house. We

looked for land to purchase to build a facility, but realized that it was too late in the year to be able to build a new building. We began looking for old farmhouses to refurbish, but the amount of work needed to bring the houses up to the level we required was too involved. When we found the current location advertised in the newspaper, we fell in love with the property while traveling up the driveway. The setting was beautiful. The brick ranch house was located on seven acres of land that would provide room for expansion if we needed to do so in the future. As we looked through the house, the owner was trying to tell us about the property, but we were too busy deciding how many cats could live in each room! We knew when we left that this was the home for The Tenth Life. We went back again to look at the house a few days later so we could determine the amount to offer for the property and the contingencies we wanted to address in the offer. Our offer was accepted and The Tenth Life was born. We took possession of the property in November 1984 and began the work of repainting all of the walls with oil-based paint which the veterinarians told us would be easier to clean and healthier for the cats. We also divided the basement into rooms with wooden studs and chicken wire so the cats could see out of their rooms and into the rest of the basement. We bought new furniture and carpeting from a wholesaler and furnished each room as it would have been in a regular house. The preparation was finished the week after Thanksgiving, and we began moving cats into their new home. When we started we had thirty cats that we had housed in a separate building on our property at home and fifty-one cats that we had been boarding at our veterinarian’s office. The eighty-one cats were moved in with only seven cats to a room. They all looked so happy when they were settled into their rooms. We soon set out to establish suppliers for the every day requirements: food, litter, cages, litter boxes, food and water bowls, etc. These suppliers have changed over the years, but the cats (and dogs) are still provided with the best food we can provide (Hills Science Diet). Further, we use premium cat litters to give the cats the best we can and to minimize the harm to the rest of the facility from litter dust. We learned over the years that litter dust kills furnaces and air-conditioners when you have the number of cats and litter boxes we need for the comfort of the cats. After that, with the help of a local veterinarian, we were able to establish a relationship with a wholesale supplier of medicines and high-end expendables for the cats. Having the proper medicines available at all times is essential when housing large numbers of cats and kittens. If you detect and treat a malady early, it prevents the spread of that disease to the other occupants of the facility. All of the veterinarians we have used over the years have always assured that we have the proper medicines available in the quantities we need to make sure that diseases would not spread if treated in a timely manner. We then incorporated in the State of Ohio as The Tenth Life, Incorporated (dba The Tenth Life) and soon after received our tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. This allowed us to accept charitable donations which provide a tax benefit to the donor. It also allowed us to purchase supplies and equipment for the cats without having to pay sales tax. It is amazing how much that adds up to over a full year. That way, the cats have even more money to be spent on them for their care and welfare. From that humble beginning, we have grown to where we are today. The year 1998 saw the payoff of the mortgage. In 1999, we completed our health care facility and hired Dr. Jennie as our veterinarian. Our dream had finally been realized. The health care facility is a totally operational facility with surgery, x-ray, and blood-work capability, with the advanced technology of a surgical laser and an ultrasound. With the completion of this facility, the cats never again needed to leave The Tenth Life, and often their rooms, for medical care. There was an open house for the health care facility in December 1999, and we began using the facility in January 2000 with Dr. Jennie working part time with us. In July 2001, Dr. Jennie became full-time with The Tenth Life. In June 2002 the addition of a new building to house cats was begun. The building fund drive raised about $85,000 of the construction cost, which was slightly over $100,000. The remainder had to be paid from operating funds. The fall of 2002 brought the completion of the new building with eleven rooms to house the cats that had been living in the basement. Each room has ceramic floors, a skylight, from two to four large windows, and resin furniture with plenty of soft bedding for their comfort. In October the cats were moved into the eleven rooms and out of the basement. The new building offered bright, well ventilated rooms where the cats seemed so happy. In September 2004, we were approached by an elderly gentleman who needed a home for his sixty (really seventy-eight) cats, as he could no longer properly care for them. He offered to fund much of the cost of a new building if we would care for his cats for the rest of their lives. With his contribution and another from a man who had thirty cats that he needed a home for, we decided to build another new building. Construction started immediately and was finished by December. The cats from these two men and those who had been living in the original house were moved into their new surroundings in January 2005. This new building, with twelve rooms, is much like the first one with large windows, skylights, ceramic tile on the floors and walls and resin furniture with bedding for the comfort of the cats. Most of the cost of this building was provided by these two men and donations to the building fund. The remainder was paid from the operating funds. After that building was completed, we immediately began renovating the house for the feline leukemia and feline AIDS positive cats. We painted walls, installed new vinyl flooring, fluorescent lighting, doors, and new woodwork. The leukemia cats were moved into the huge living room, and the feline AIDS cats were given two large bedrooms with a door between them. They were thrilled with their new rooms and large windows. In March of 2005, we had an open house to allow visitors to view the new building and the renovated house. All the buildings have new windows, which allow for excellent ventilation (fresh air changes). Additionally, all buildings have electric heat and central air-conditioning. Next, we remodeled the dogs’ area with paneling, a drop ceiling, and built a half wall to form an entrance way through the breezeway for visitors. At the same time the dogs’ outside play area was more than tripled in size. This completed all of the construction and remodeling of The Tenth Life facility. All of the buildings are connected and have intercoms to make communication from one building to another possible. Today the facility houses over five hundred cats in four buildings. There are also three dogs in residence. Jerry and Marsha have established a trust that will allow the continuation of The Tenth Life even after they are gone. In twenty-six years, The Tenth Life has grown from a two-person operation to an organization with over sixty volunteers to provide all care (except medical) for the over 450 cats and three dogs, a full-time veterinarian, a fully equipped health care facility, and four buildings to house cats in a home environment until they are adopted. Thousands of cats have found loving homes as a result of coming to The Tenth Life for shelter, love, medical attention, and a tenth life. Thank you for making all of this possible and allowing us to realize our dream of helping stray, homeless, or unwanted cats. The hard work of many volunteers and your donations has made all of this possible. Your continued support will allow us to help even more cats find the home of their dreams and help reduce the over-population problem.

A volunteer showed me a video of Moochie eating, and I thought y'all needed to see it too!

He opens his mouth, shovels as much food into his mouth and then shakes his head (and the food goes flying.) No wonder his room is a mess!!! 🤦‍♀️

He makes up for his messiness by being so freaking cute 😍

Does anyone else have a cat that eats like this?!?!

This is Roscoe....he and 12 of his housemates came from a tough situation - their owner was losing his living situation and didn't have a place for his cats.

Bad news for the cats, BUT good news for me because now he insists on snuggling with me every time I visit room 3. Within about 60 seconds he is milling around waiting for me to put him on my lap where he DOES NOT MOVE!

He's a healthy, beautiful 2 year old boy. He's on the skinny side because he is a bit overwhelmed in his new room.

Can anyone give Roscoe another chance at a loving home?!?!

This is Natalie, and she is so stinking cute! The poor girl came from a really rough neighborhood and was homeless. She was friendly and would approach humans for food. The person who brought her in was worried someone would take her and abuse her, so she came to us!

Despite her background, she's a prim and proper girl who is very annoyed that she has roommates. She's not aggressive towards other cats, she just refuses to walk on the same ground they do. So, she stays on the first level of the cat tower and observes.

She's about 1 year old and would do best as an only cat. She's healthy, sweet to humans and just waiting for someone who will dote on her ❤️

This is Angelica ❤️

While she looks like a total grumpy cat, she is one of the friendliest cats at The Tenth Life. She's currently pacing across my lap hoping for more scratches while I write this 🤣

She came to us after recently having 4 kittens. After the kittens were weaned, she was spayed and has absolutely embraced being a lady without responsibilities. She has gained quite a bit of weight and wanders her room like she owns it.

She's about 4 years old and healthy. Call Marsha at 937-376-5550 to set up a time to visit with her 😻

(Trivia for the 90s kids out there! Angelica's kids were named Tommy, Phil, Lil and Chuckie. Who remembers this cartoon?!?! (Yes I know Angelica wasn't the mom in the cartoon.))

We've had a busy few weeks - lots of complicated medical cases keeping us on our toes! Like this little dude...

This is Cletus 😻 He came to us a few weeks ago after someone saw him being repeatedly abused by some neighborhood kids. All of his paw pads and both of his back hocks were ulcerated, bleeding and so painful! He needed to be sedated for cleaning and bandaging his wounds. After a few weeks of antibiotics, a clean place to live and good nutrition, he's looking much better!

Despite his introduction to humans, he is the sweetest cat! Loves people and desperately wants a home where he can snuggle his humans ❤️

Another message about some sweet kittens from their foster mom!!

Chelsea (aka Sassy Pants) is a vocal and very inquisitive little girl. I call her Sassy Pants because she is quite a little sassy girl and makes sure to give her opinion. Don’t worry, she is quite adorable as she is giving her opinion. She can be cuddly, as long as she is in the mood.

Sydney is a little more independent, but a lovely little kitten. Her fur is really soft and she can’t resist hiding under a blanket. She enjoys her attention but more of a 'I'll sit beside you versus on your lap' kitten.

Sydney and Chelsea are rambunctious little girls and watch out if you get a feather toy out. Their leaping ability is quite impressive. Don’t miss out on these precious girls

😍 Wow 😍

We are beyond lucky to have such a supportive community! Last week, we only had 2 cases of canned food (this would last us about 1 week). We sent out a plea for help, and y'all have responded!!

Today, the FIV room feasted on their favorite (Friskies) 😻 and Ariel (who has a bad mouth even after having all of her teeth extracted) chowed down on some of her Churu creamy treat and Miss Susie ate the special treats her late owner used to feed her ❤️

Y'all are the BEST! Thank you so much for the canned food and treat donations!! If you are still looking to donate, I will attach the link to our Amazon Wishlist (but to be clear we will take ANY canned food donations).

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!

A call for help!!

We have been incredibly fortunate to NOT ask for canned food donations for a while due to an influx of donations by kind individuals and fellow cat rescue organizations that shared their resources with us - thank you!

HOWEVER, our canned food donations have begun to dwindle, and we are asking for donations of ANY canned cat food (the general population prefers Friskies pate but we will gratefully take any donations!). See something on sale at the store - just drop it off with us at your convenience! Is it easier to peruse Amazon and ship directly to us - check out our wishlist below. If you prefer Chewy and need our address, please send us a message and we can give it to you.

We are so very grateful for this community that helps us provide the best care for these unwanted, abandoned, neglected kitties until they can find a FURever home. We do our best to provide what they need, but we need your help - thank you 🥹

-From the humans at The Tenth Life ❤️

P.S. I will post some photos of the cats that get canned food in the comments below 😺

I love a sweet tiger boy with tons of stripes!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Those stunning eyes belong to Louis 🧡 He's about a year old and a sweet boy. I'm pretty sure he knows how good looking he is because he enjoys posing. He's a smidge shy at first but warms up quickly when you sit on the ground with him. He came in with 2 female buddies (Iris and Connie) who are purr machines and very curious. Louis is neutered, vaccinated and healthy. He's in room 2 waiting for the right person who will appreciate all those stripes!

It's National Donut Day?!?!?! If you're no stranger to our page, you know we celebrate these holidays with CATS! So let me introduce you to Donut! 🍩

She came to us a bit rounder (she was pregnant), but she has now slimmed down. She's a beautiful brown tiger girl, 2 years old, spayed and healthy. She's new to room 3, so if you go visit her you might need to give her a few minutes to come out. She's a sweet girl who deserves a home 🏡

(A message from one of our fabulous fosters!!)

Kitten Alert! Don’t miss out on these sweet babies!!

We have quite a few kittens available in Room 10. I really don’t like to play favorites but I have to say this may be our sweetest foster babies yet. They are quite loving and cuddly and ready for a great home. These are the first four, but in two weeks, 2 more will be joining them (that write up will be later). With these four, be ready to give them attention and don’t be surprised when they sit on your shoulder.

Bosco: He is a grey / white tuxedo and a fluffy boy. He is very easy going and loves a good cuddle. I can tell he is going to be a very distinguished boy, but in the meantime, he loves to tussle with his siblings. Please ignore his short whiskers for now. One of his siblings loves to chew on his whiskers, but he will grow those back quickly. 😊

Dante: He is our fluffiest boy and the most likely to demand several cuddles. When we walked into our kitten room, we would have 6 kittens wanting hugs. Everyone would take their cuddle and continue playing, but Dante loves to stay around for additional cuddles. However, don’t let him fool you. He can be a crazy boy and loves to wrestle with everyone. He also talks quite a bit, especially when it is time for food.

Carlotta: She is a gorgeous black / white tuxedo and also has longer hair. She tends to look all ruffled like she just rolled out of bed and it makes her adorable. She also enjoys to perch on your shoulder and likes to make sure she knows everything that is going on. There is definitely no attitude with this little girl, just a fun personality!

Pippa: Black cats are my weakness and Pippa is one of our favorites ever! The other three love to be held, but Pippa prefers her attention on your lap or sitting beside you. She adores being petted and gives lots of love. Don’t lose the chance to have your own gorgeous panther.

Well... poor Waldo got returned to us. His owner said he meowed all the time. And they're right.... he can be a total loud mouth. We hear him down the hall calling to us when he knows we have treats. However, I just spent 20 minutes with him, and he is sweet as pie and hasnt said a word while I've been in his room. He snuggles and just wants love and attention. I think he's the kind of cat who needs stimulation- a window perch with a bird feeder, cat TV, lots of toys that buzz or fling or roll across the floor. I genuinely believe he will find the right owner, but until then I will enjoy all his love ❤️
(He's about 2 years old and hanging out in room F. Healthy and handsome!)

Beemer is OBSCESSED with catching treats 😍 He's not a super snuggly cat, but he is very entertaining 🙃

He's 4-5 years old. He's a healthy boy who takes excellent care of his coat. He gets along fine with all the cats in his room - he just wants to play catch! Someone visit him in room K ❤️

Please help us solve a debate....
This is Millie. She definitely has white hair, but does she also gave gray or brown hair?! We can't tell if she's a gray and white or brown and white 🤔 Maybe gray with brownish highlights?!?!?!

She's about 10 months old and came to us very sick. She had an infected uterus (called a pyometra) - it was so bad she had pus dripping out her. Our vet spayed her immediately and she hasn't looked back 😍 She's a sweet, petite little thing, but clearly a strong girl! She's now looking for her furever home 🏡
