Meet Ronan (the mama for our sweet pups) She is a pure bred german shepherd and a service dog for her own (human) mom! Shes incredibly intelligent and loves to be where the people are. Ronan alerts to any too high or too low heart rates and blood pressures so her mom knows when a potential fainting episode could occur. She is a wonderful family dog who has seen us through our many family adjustments in the military and now in civilian life. she loves babies four legged or human. she has made wonderful, healthy and intelligent puppies. Crate training is in our opinion the most important training you could offer your dog. It’s difficult with a puppy and extra difficult with an older dog with poor association with a crate. The crate offers a den like experience in a small enclosed space. Their crate is their safe space to decompress, rest, and have control of their environment.
By allowing your dog a space that they can calm themselves in, it can help them build and or boost their confidence, limit aggression, separation anxiety and the destructive behavior that stems from it, calm over excitement, and most importantly keeps them safe from household hazards that could lead to serious injuries.

To start:
Make sure the crate is a proper size your dog should be able to sit, stand, and lay down comfortably in their crate.
HIGH REWARD TREATS! (No one likes to work without being paid so be prepared for lots of rewards! Boiled shredded chicken is our go to)

feed and give water with the crate open to start

After exploration, give a word to the crate “place”, “den”, “crate” all work wonderfully

Put on a collar and leash indoors while bringing them to their crate while stating your command then close the door and reward! DO NOT REWARD BEHAVIOR YOU DON’T LIKE!

Use the crate when you will not be home with your dog for their safety and anxiety. DO NOT leave your dog enclosed for long periods of time.

Use the crate when the dog is overstimulated (jumping, nipping, chaotic energy) in order to decompress. Reward once in the crate.

This is just the basics, the most important thing is to not give up and stay consistent. Dogs will cry for what could be weeks as they learn to adjust to a new home/ family. Know you are doing what is best for them in the long term. Your dog will be able to reach his/her best potential when given the opportunity to do so.
