Lots and lots of exciting things happening at BVVS, but we're starting this one because it is very overdue. Please welcome Emily Whitney as my new assistant!

My name is Emily Whitney. I was born and raised here in the ADKs. Growing up, my family always had animals of all shapes and sizes. I was lucky to live in a place where I could grow up on a farm. My passion from a very young age was horses; anything horses! I started riding at the age of 3 and have continued ever since. I attended Keene Central school, k-12. My 11th and 12th grade years I attended an animal science program in which I thrived. Following high school I went into the human medical field for 3 strong years and loved helping many different people. During those years, I was also starting to develop my very own business in the horse industry. Now as I continue to grow my business of boarding horses and teaching riding lessons, I have a once in a lifetime opportunity to work for Dr. Jackson. I am looking forward to learning more in the field I love, continuing to help others, and to be able to help advocate for all the wonderful creatures we see everyday.

Hi, everyone! I know it has been a bit since you have heard from me. Today, I am here with some exciting news (though it might not be news to all of you). I am very pleased to announce we've added Kearstin Ashline, pictured below on her horse Dexter, to our team as an assistant!
Kearstin has lived in the Adirondacks her whole life and brings experience from both having animals of her own and having worked in various roles in the human medical field. She has already been a huge help, and I can't wait for you all to meet her in person!
Now that Kearstin is on board, we'll have some more frequent posts to keep you all updated on BVVS happenings. So keep your eyes peeled!

Hi!

I am having some minor surgery today, and will be unavailable for both appointments and any medical advice until regular business hours (9 AM) on Monday August 23rd.

During that time, if you have an emergency, Dr. Kerry Alexader has graciously agreed to cover urgent issues if she's not already with a client.
She can be reached at 518-534-4491.
As always, please be kind and understanding even if she can not get to you. And please do not ask her to attend to things that are not urgent!

If you are unable to get ahold of her, please consider calling Upstate Equine at (518) 695-3744 or Rood and Riddle at (518) 583-7273, both of whom provide haul in emergency services.

Thank you all for your understanding and see you Monday!

Hello!

A little late in getting this message out on this platform, but I am officially back to work!
There are still some things I am limited in/unable to do because of wrist/arm weakness. I'm in physical therapy to help recover my strength and range of motion, and for the most part it is business as usual.

Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding over the past months as I've been recovering. And many, many thanks to Dr. Amanda DeFranco and Dr. Kerry Alexander for taking care of everyone while I could not!

Wishing you all happy holidays and continued health during these crazy times!

Hi, folks!

As many of you know I severely fractured my wrist over the weekend. Next week I have a follow-up to determine whether I will need surgery to help it heal properly. Needless to say this means I am unable to see patients at this time.

The other large animal veterinarians in the area have graciously agreed to help out with sick and emergency calls while I am unable to do so.
Dr. Amanda DeFranco is willing to see patients in the Champlain region from Ti to Essex. She can be reached at (518) 480-1093
Dr. Kerry Alexander is willing to see patients in the northern/mountain regions. She can be reached at (518) 293-8591

If you do need one of these veterinarian's service please remember that they are busy with their own practices, and not available 100% of the time.

If you are unable to get ahold of a veterinarian and able to haul your animals here are numbers for local referral facilities.
Upstate Equine Medical Center (518) 695-3744
Vermont Large Animal Clinic (802) 893-6800
Battenkill Bovine (518) 692-7372

Thank you all for your understanding!
Martha

Greetings, I hope this finds you all well! Amidst the Covid-19 restrictions I wanted to give you all an update on how we’re operating, and any effects on you all!
Veterinary services are still considered essential, and I am still here for you and your animals.
There are a few changes that various veterinary associations have recommended and I am instituting to protect you, your animals, and myself.
The regulations are as follows:
1) If you are considered high risk, I ask that you have your animals caught prior to my arrival, and that you stay inside while I am on property. If you know in advance that you have an animal that is difficult to handle, please let me know, and I will try to bring someone to help me.
2) If you or someone in your household has respiratory symptoms or a fever (or is ill in some other capacity), please let me know and reschedule your appointment. If it is an emergency I will obviously still come see your animal, but I will ask that you have your animal contained in advance. I can speak with you over the phone during/after examination and bring someone to restrain for me as needed.
3) Even if you are not sick and not considered high risk, consider having your animals contained in advance and stay inside. At a minimum I am asking that we maintain a 6 foot distance as much as humanly possible.
4) Please limit the number of people that are present at visits.
If I become sick I will stop seeing calls, and work with other veterinarians in the area to get you and your animals the best care possible
Beyond normal biosecurity measures, I am wiping down my boxes and vehicle with disinfectant wipes between calls to protect myself, you, and your critters. I am trying to keep daily visits to different locations to a minimum (1-2 appointments per day), so that there is plenty of time to thoroughly clean equipment (and myself).
I know that now may seem like a good time to do routine care, because you are home. If your animals normally get their vaccines in April that’s true! As stated above, I am trying to do my part in limiting the number of people I am exposed to/are exposed to me. Initially veterinary care was limited to emergency/urgent appointments only, and I do not want to abuse the privilege to continue to see routine appointments. So please, if your animals are normally vaccinated later in the spring or in early summer, let’s schedule to vaccinate them then!
As always, I am happy to consult with you over the phone or via email, and if you have any questions at all please reach out to me!
Thank you all for being so understanding and helping me do my part in keeping our community healthy!
-Martha

Hello, everyone! Spring is coming, and that means vaccine season for the horses! To ensure everyone is able to get scheduled, I am switching to a 9-5 Monday-Friday schedule. I may be a bit harder to get ahold of, as I'm handling more critters and driving through more dead zones. If you have an emergency and I don't pick up the phone please page me in addition to leaving a voicemail! If you need to schedule an appointment or have a question please leave me a voicemail and/or send me a text message, and know that I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
