This little giant is part of our on and off leash lessons program. He’s staying with us this week to get a jump on his training while his family enjoys some time away.

36,000 feet in the air, on my way to Colorado, a friend sends a text that, as a dog trainer, breaks our hearts to hear.

“Hey man you know anyone who would want to give a retired k9 a retirement home. It’s a female mal close right around 9. But it’s about to get surrendered to our pound this afternoon. The people who own her had their kid playing with her and using a kong and the dog nipped the kid trying to get the kong. My girlfriend said if they drop it off they’ll have to euthanize it so was just checking with a few people to see if anyone would want to give it a retirement home.”

Immediately, I sent out a “911” message to my graduates group and had several clients jump to the occasion to help this sweet pup!

Today, one of my clients drove to Virginia to save this dogs life! I am so proud of the family we have built with our clients and my heart is so happy that we were able to pull contacts together to make this happen!

So far “Kallie” is getting along with Fritz with a little space and management. When I get home from our vacation we’re planning on some training time to help acclimate her to her new home!

This happens all too often, unfortunately. There are foundations and companies out there that are designed to help working k9s once they’ve retired and we are so thankful for them. Not all dogs get saved like this one. We HAVE to do better and give back to these animals who give us so much!

A friend of mine made a post this morning asking what most dog trainers should view as a simple question. He asked his question directed towards dog pros only. I can only hope that most of the responses have not been from dog professionals.

I’m stealing this from Jeff Coltenback so here’s the question.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of punishment?

Comment your answer below.

Vacations aren’t only for fun. They’re also for knowledge and history.

9/11 has shaped our lives in so many different ways. This tragedy in history created a path for us to fight for and protect our freedoms. Many years of my life were dedicated to helping service men and women as dog handlers in law enforcement as well as our armed forces. These experiences shaped the man I am today.

Today we learn about Explosive detection dogs, search and rescue dogs, as well as therapy dogs and their rolls in history and our present.

Take a moment to honor not only our two legged hero’s but also our four legged ones!

Dogs are imperfect. You could train them to do the “right” thing every day of their life and when opportunity strikes they’ll do the opposite.

It is their nature, in my opinion.

Today was an imperfect day for me.

As I unload all four of my dogs into the airing yard of my friend’s house ,who is a dog trainer as well, the dogs kick it in high gear and sprint into zoomies. After a quick release of energy three of the four run up to him and start jumping up snuggling in and dog pile hugging him.

On one side of the coin it makes me really happy to see the love and confidence my pups have with the people who will be taking care of them, the other side of me is screaming on the inside!

Why are my dogs jumping all over this man! They’re not supposed to do that. They should be the epitome of perfect! Heck, that’s what I do for a living!

As I sit here and think about how often I teach people how to prevent their dogs from jumping I realize I don’t teach my own dogs these behaviors.

It’s not that I’m lazy or don’t have the knowledge…. It’s that I enjoy the embrace from my dogs. I play with them. I push them away and let them jump back into my arms. We celebrate each other probably every time we interact with each other.

Because of this relationship when I’m not engaged with them they do not engage with me. It’s an unspoken language that we all understand.

In the moment this morning my friend was engaging and so were the dogs. It was mutual love, engagement, and play. He was fine with it, the dogs were having a blast, but I was dying on the inside! Ha ha.

At any moment we could have given an “off” command or any other redirecting command and they would have subsided. So is it REALLY a problem?

Are you giving your dog it’s best life?

Underweight dogs are not happy healthy dogs.

Overweight dogs are not happy healthy dogs.

You control their intake of food and help maintain their exercise.

I see overweight dogs more often than underweight. Just like in humans being overweight hurts the joints and overall health.

Do better for your pets. Physical health helps mental health!

This week alone I’ve had multiple people tell me “my dog just wants to please me.”

I disagree,but here is why.

Your dog wants to be happy.

When you’re happy, you give the dog the things that make it happy; Treats, verbal praise, physical praise, toys, and play.

So, by the dog making you happy, you can make the dog happy.

It’s not solely your happiness that drives them rather than what they can recive once they’ve made you happy.
