CRYSTAL'S CAUTIONARY TALE
Crystal is being returned to her caretaker today. She was spayed yesterday and will never again give birth. Crystal is only 4 lbs, look how tiny she is. Crystal was discovered yesterday morning, having given birth to a litter of kittens overnight in the trap. All kittens were non-viable and sadly deceased in the trap pushed up to one end with the p*e pad.
We share this story so that people understand the importance of spaying and neutering, especially at a young age before they reach sexual maturity. Kittens will have kittens if not spayed. Kittens will impregnate kittens if not neutered. Adult male cats will impregnate kittens not caring at all how small or young they are.
We are here to help, Michiana! Let us help you fix your colony cats and free-roaming community cats you are caring for.

If you have a pet that needs to be fixed there are low cost spay/neuter resources available as well.

Our volunteers work hard and love unconditionally for the animals in their care. We recently brought in a 10 year old Pomeranian from a local animal control facility. He was the happiest little guy with a big smile and happy tail. Our dog department and medical clinic worked tirelessly to give this guy a 2nd chance. His treatments included a couple surgeries, round the clock foster home care and a stay at an emergency clinic. Sadly his health condition remained too critical and we had to let him go. Below are some wonderful words from a volunteer in our dog department that cared for this guy.
“I have worked in rescue for many years and it always hurts when you lose one of the animals that you have rescued. This little dog might have had a better chance if he had been neutered when he was younger. It's with a heavy heart that I share sweet, playful, adorable Prince, the little Pomeranian.
He came to Pet Refuge a few weeks ago. At that time we did not know that he had medical issues that would require surgery to save his life. But we are a rescue, and we were determined to give him the medical care he needed and help him find a new home.
I took him home hoping it would be better for his healing. Unfortunately surgery was too difficult for his body. He had complications that we were unaware of. Conditions that don't show on x-rays or bloodwork. We tried everything. Prince fought a valiant fight, but it became apparent it was just too much and nothing more could be done. We held him and he knew he was loved as he passed.
RIP PRINCE. You were definitely loved by me, my family, the vets and their staff, and all at Pet Refuge. Fly high little buddy.” ~ Paula

Happy National Vet Day! Pet Refuge sends a big thank you to our Dr. Ashley. We are very lucky to have her with us and caring for all of our cats and dogs!
We wouldn't have as many "happy tails" to share without her help and support.
Thank you!

Some of the fun things our dogs got to do this week for enrichment.
Our volunteers go above and beyond to insure our dogs get some extra time out of their kennels and burn off some energy.
Some volunteers take the dogs to local parks for field trips and hikes. A handful of shifts do play groups with the dogs. One volunteer even brings a large pool to her shift on a weekly basis for some summer fun!
THANK YOU to our volunteers for committing time each week to our shelter dogs! We appreciate you ALL so much !

Kenai 😻
I’m honor of Father’s Day, we’re featuring adoptable kitties with Dad-Bods from Pet Refuge! And today we’re talking about Kenai.
Kenai is a stunning boy who’s lived at Pet Refuge since he was 4 months old. He’s now 4 years old and deserves a family to finally call his own. He loves laying in his hammock and looking out the window. He has the sweetest demeanor and gets along amazing with other cats.
But the best thing about Kenai is arguably his personality. He’s naturally curious and loves playing with toys. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance bestie, Kenai is the perfect pet for you!
AND if you want to adopt Kenai, now’s the time to do it! Pet Refuge is offering 25% off all adoptions, for cats and dogs, throughout the whole month of June.
They also are in desperate need for volunteers – and they will work around your schedule. Anything helps!
For more information on Ken and all the animals in need of help – check out petrefuge.com

FRIDAY VOLUNTEER FAVORITE ~ Abby
“I have spent a long time building a relationship with Abby and my honest opinion of her is that she is a wonderful, intelligent dog who will give you an amazing companionship.
She can be a bit much for people, but if you build a relationship on trust and respect you won’t have problems. For example, I respect that she prefers affection on her own terms by allowing her to come to me and leave when she would like, while on the other hand she knows if she starts herding or nipping me we are done with whatever fun activity we were doing.
Believe me this is not a quick relationship to build and I spent 6 months with Abby before I trusted her enough to take the leash off of her while she played in the yard and even longer for me to trust her not to get mouthy with me when I took the leash off in the first place.
I think anyone who adopts her should be prepared for some bruises on your arms as well as some holes in your shirts for a while, but if you give her the commitment she deserves those unwanted behaviors will slowly be replaced with a dog who loves you!” ~ Erica

Auction items will be live at 5 pm on Wednesday! Silent Auction bidding is open to all! We hear the excuses all the time. Oh I can’t volunteer because it would just break my 💔 to see them in the shelter. I can’t volunteer, I would want to take them all home. If a bird 🦅 can do it so can you. It doesn’t take much to make our 🐱 and 🐕 happy. Just getting out of their kennels to play and being fed, getting clean litter boxes makes them happy and thrive! Come by the shelter during any adoption event either on Thursdays 6-8 pm or Saturdays 10-3 to check out how you can volunteer with the best cats, dogs and other volunteers ‼️
Fun Facts about Trip: 🩵 He likes other dogs 🧡 Per the video he can entertain himself 💚 He is fun 🩷 Still young enough to be able to train easy 💜 He enjoys walks although needs leash work
Want a dog who loves the snow ? Then meet Beau at one of our weekly adoption events at our shelter ! Adoptions today until 3 ‼️🐶
Last week the dogs enjoyed their time in the snow. The last few days, not so much. During cold spells as we are having, we take extra precautions. ~ The dogs are not outside at all in their outside kennels. We clean a few kennels at a time and place those dogs in different rooms in the dog department during the cleaning process. ~The dogs do not go for walks and 99% would not want to either. ~During a 4 hour shift, the dogs will go out to the yards 2-3 times for quick potties. ~The dogs spend their enrichment times in varies areas inside playing with toys, doing treat puzzles or Kong wobblers and cuddling with the volunteers. Stay warm everyone and keep your pets safe.
We are always looking to add people to volunteer in our dog department! 🐶 It’s rewarding, you meet new people with common interests and you never know you might need up falling in love and adopting one of our sweet doggies! Fill out an app at https://www.petrefuge.com/volunteer SHARE this post PLEASE!
Robby is a sweet, young guy. He walks great on a leash, not one to pull. Get along with other dogs, tolerant of crazy dogs. Can entertain himself with toys. Can be timid at first meeting but warms up fast. Share to help get this precious boy a furever home! Meet him tomorrow at our shelter adoptions from 10-3! https://www.petrefuge.com/dog-adoption
