Hela, one of the puppies from the rescued litter I had, has been training to be placed as a Service Dog! She is extremely smart, eager to please and problem solve, and has the perfect temperament. She has even shown some interest and behaviors for naturally alerting to her handlers seizers and other health issues, while this wasn't expected of her, it is super helpful, and we will be continuing to monitor her behavior changes around her new parents health issues and shape them when appropriate!

Here Hela is during a couple different doctors appointments this week, practicing her tuck, down stays, and check ins!

It's been a busy week for the rest of the pups!

Both Diana and Teddy went to their new homes this week and have tons and tons of room to run and play, as well as new siblings to play with!

Along with their siblings, they also met some new friends this week! Does anyone remember Piggy?? He has gotten HUGE.

We were watching him and his brother this week so we've had a few play dates with them and the pups.
Pig is also prime in the middle of his teenage phase and showing it off, so we worked on a good bit of training in between all the play time.

These girls all went to their forever homes and got their new names this week!

I'm so happy for all of these babies and their new families! And I'm extra excited to start training and socializing with them next week!

Coco (previously Phoebe) is also going to begin training to be a service dog and I am thrilled to be able to be a part of that journey.
Keep your eye out for new posts about the remaining 3 pups, and their sibling who will be with me for a little while longer, as we start more direct socializing and obedience training!

It's been a busy few weeks around here with the puppies!
All puppies have been temperament tested and have had their first 2 rounds of vaccines, and puppies have started going home!

Penny, Cupcake (now Butter), and Meg all went home over the last few days, and Phoebe will be going home today!

We've also been on a couple more outings over the past 2 weeks, and all the kiddos are doing super well, and have been steadily less cranky in the car (we don't love being confined).

They are getting So Big!! I still have 3 puppies left waiting to go to their forever homes, message me if you're interested in one of them!

Please enjoy these sleeping puppy pictures, as well as some from our outings!

Took Cupcake and Phoebe out for a socializing trip yesterday! They stayed in the cart (unless I was carrying them) and I had everyone who pet them use hand sanitizer before touching, but they got exposed to lots of new smells, people, feelings, and sounds!

They fell asleep about 20 minutes into our trip, woke up to get pets a couple times, and then woke up as we were leaving.

They were very good babies 🥰

Here are some individual pics of all the babies!

It's play time! Also have the dremel plugged in and out under the litter container to give extra loud input, and also to give them the feeling of the vibration.
The vibration only extends about a foot out around the container, so they are easily whole to explore and escape it as they want

New set up!!

The first picture is from right after the pups got back in, second is from this morning after they figured out how to escape and I had to rearrange a little

31/12/2022

We got individual pictures of all the babies yesterday! I have to sort through them, and then will introduce everyone.

But for now, watch these confident little nuggets play with a noise maker (and demand attention)

Look how cute these little nuggets are !!

Let's talk socialization!

The puppies are old enough now to start learning about all kind of different things in their environment, it's super important that we get them desensitized to as many things as possible while they're so young.
Some of the things I am doing everyday include:
- Letting the puppies explore different environments of the house
- Giving them different textile experiences
- Each day, at least twice a day. I also play a series of decentatization sounds from the TV. We do a different playlist/ set of sounds. Every time, listen to is to ensure that they get a healthy amount of exposure to a wide range of sounds. Some examples of the sounds that are played include but are not limited to: construction and busy city sounds fireworks, storms, dogs and other animal noises, household noises such as things dropping and breaking, as well as other sounds, you might hear inside a house, like vacuums babies, crying, doorbells, knocking, etc.

This is not a comprehensive list, but examples of what we have played so far and will continue to play.
I have also real life sounds, such as vacuuming around the house, in the puppy room, dropping things around the house (this is easy because I drop things a lot lol) blenders, etc.

I've also been doing plenty of handling them, including picking them up and holding them, playing with their feet and their ears, touching their teeth, lifting their tails, and petting and patting them a lot.

Some other ways that we are socializing, is they get to be around my personal dogs and cats and as of this week, i have also started to introduce them to more people, and will continue to do so.

The puppies are super curious right now and unless the puppies are sleeping, anytime someone comes into their room, the puppies will run right over to sniff and explore the new people, and are very happy to be picked up, and played with.

As a reminder, these sweet babies will be up for adoption starting at 8 weeks old (they just turned 4 weeks on Christmas!).

Please send me a message if you or someone you know has been looking for a puppy.

The puppies are 4 weeks old now! They have started to begin acting like actual tiny dogs, they are playing and exploring a lot more and definitely have their own personalities that are developing.

Due to some really unfortunate circumstances. I ended up taking in mama and babies earlier last week, and will be caring for them until I adopt them out. Mom wasn't in great shape when I picked her up, but is doing much better and has gained some weight back. Puppies have been set up in their own whelping area , where they have plenty of room to sleep, eat, potty, and play.

As you can see in the pictures, the whelping area is almost entirely made up to be their potty area as well, this is because since they are so young, and due to the environment that they were in prior, they're still really dirty, and will potty pretty much anywhere,. This week I began to start making their potty area smaller and giving them more designated spaces for sleeping, and eating. I'll continue giving them more designated areas for sleep/eat/play and making their potty area smaller but I'll be doing that slowly, to let them adjust properly. So far they have a small designated area for food, water and sleeping if they want, but they tend to sleep wherever they fall down.

I have scheduled posts throughout the rest of this week, so look out for those, detailing more things that I've been doing with them!

As a note, these babies will be up for adoption starting at 8 weeks! Please share all around so we can find good homes for all these little love bugs. There will be an adoption fee.

Update about the puppies!

They're so so precious and small, although growing fast, and have just started opening their eyes and ears!
I didn't see them as much last week because they're human was sick, but I've gotten to see them a couple times this week; when i've been there we've been doing some ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation), giving them extra human contact, helping mom with her body awareness and giving her breaks when she needs them, and I just did their first nail trim!

ENS is characterized by 5 distinct exercises: Tactile stimulation of their feet, holding their body in an up-right position, holding their body upside down, cradling them in a supine position, and thermal stimulation - placing them on a cool damp towel with their feet hanging. You do all of these exercises for 3-5 seconds once a day from 3 to 16 days old.

We are done with ENS as of today, but we will still be doing plenty of handling and socializing!

One of the key components of having a dog off leash with a reliable recall, and safely, is teaching them to automatically check in with you. When automatic check ins you can ensure a stronger recall, and make sure you and your dog are keeping tabs on one another. This discourages bolting, disengaging from you and even wandering too far from your proximity. The first stage in teaching this process is reinforcing any gesture towards you the dog makes. This can be a look, a glance, or even a direct return. The more often you mark and reward your dog looking at you, the more often they are going to offer that behavior. This sets you up to have a wonderful way to engage with your dog while you build off leash skills for adventures in the wilderness!

Advocating for your dog.

For some owners, this is not a skill that comes easily. Phrases like: “Sorry, he’s in training.” “Nope. He doesn’t really want any petting.” “Hey, can you leash your dog? We need some space.” aren’t always easy to get out when you feel the societal pressure to allow an interaction with your pup. We know it can be hard to interrupt the flurry of cheerful, friendly hands that “just love dogs.” But you can do it! Take a deep breath, and ask for space. Your dog will thank you. We often tell clients to practice this at home. You might feel silly telling your reflection or spouse to stop and keep their hands to themselves. But the more you rehearse it, the more naturally it will happen when you’re out and about!

For dogs like Red, having his handler advocate for him and for his space has been a huge part of his success. Knowing when your dog needs a break, not forcing or creating the expectation of greetings, etc. are all key parts of being a handler that your dog can rely on and creating a calm, happy mindset out in public. Even the most social dogs need some boundaries!

Another update!

Huckleberry is back!

This sweet man was found on the side of the road at night at the beginning of June, and has been safely cared for ever since.
Huck stayed with a potential parent for a few weeks and they ultimately decided they weren't a good fit together, so he came back to me!

Huckleberry is about 10 months old and is just the sweetest puppy. It's unknown if I will decide to adopt him out, but for now we are doing lots of training and helping him live his best life.

Please enjoy these precious pictures of him, and keep an eye out for progress videos coming soon!!

Not directly training related, but still important! Jackson, my service dog, and I went to Virginia for a family funeral last month, it was Jackson's first time on a plane and he did SO well.
To make sure that we were prepared, before our trip we made sure to do extra training and confidence building around all kinds of things we might encounter.

While in the airports Jackson did a phenomenal job of staying by my side, tasking when needed, and went through security easily. He is naturally pretty calm around crowds of people so that wasn't an issue for him.
Jack was a little anxious as the plane was taking off and took a few minutes to settle, but ultimately he was able to relax after some pets and treats.

During the service and the time we spent with family, Jackson was nothing short of amazing. There were some other dogs there that were a bit reactive to Jackson, and he acted as if he did not notice them, or the small child that put their food covered hands on his face 😂.

He of course got plenty of "off" time and had lots of fun playing and hanging out with family after working.

I've been away for a while!
I have had a lot going on lately and had to take a break from posting, but I'm back now!

I'll be making posts throughout the week detailing what we've been up to but here's a rough overview:

*My service dog and I took our first plane trip together to attend a family funeral

*We MOVED into our own place that has plenty of room for boarding and day training dogs, as well as open space for training and a fenced in yard!

*Huckleberry, our Stray-turned-foster came back to us and we have been doing lots of training with him and Jackson

*AND working with some new pups and finishing up some of our training programs.

Keep an eye out for pictures and videos of all these adventures over the next week!

Just look at this beautiful boy!!

Huck, our previous stray-turned-foster dog has been with his new home for a little over a week now and is doing so well!
We started training sessions with Huck today and it wiped him out! Right now we are just working on puppy basics and manners, as he's only about 9 months old, and we don't know his history.

We're working on Responding to his name, coming when called, and leash manners.

I can't wait to watch this boy grow and learn!

This! Muzzled dogs are good dogs!!
19/01/2021

This! Muzzled dogs are good dogs!!

Repeat after me. Muzzled dogs are NOT BAD DOGS.

Muzzled dogs have good humans.

Muzzled dogs can have more experiences because they are managed. Their quality of life is INCREASED because of the muzzle.

Muzzled dogs can still have treats.

Muzzled dogs are not miserable.

Muzzled dogs are muzzled for ALL KINDS OF REASONS. Not just aggression. Maybe they eat too much stuff off the ground and get sick. Maybe they play too rough. Maybe they over correct when startled. Maybe they want to eat squirrels. Maybe they need to learn better social skills. Not all dogs in a muzzle have a bite history, some have them on to prevent that in the first place. Sometimes the muzzle is more for the HUMAN than the DOG because it allows them to feel more confident. Big dogs, small dogs, and all breeds and sizes need muzzles sometimes. It is not a breed specific tool.

Muzzled dogs are GOOD DOGS WITH GREAT HUMANS who are setting their dog up to not fail. Judging a dog in a muzzle and their owner is the same as judging someone for wearing a helmet. They are choosing safety and being proactive and it takes WORK to get your dog to a level that they are happily working and walking around in a muzzle so kudos to the humans and dogs I work with who put that time in to better their dogs lives.

If you see a dog in a muzzle, don’t stare, don’t ask rude questions, just say “nice job, great looking dog!” And carry on. Believe me, you will have just made that humans day.

“I am a Dobermann, cataloged one of the most intelligent and most feared dogs, I have served the US Navy and I will not narrate my dark past on the German side. They called me the devil's dog, today they ask me to behave like a Poodle, they have gone so far as to wear clothes ...

I am a Malinois:
Gifted among dogs, I shine in all disciplines and I am always ready to work. Today they ask me to relax on the couch all day.

I am an Akita Inu:
My ancestors have been selected to fight with other dogs. Today they ask me to be tolerant of my peers, and they blame me for my reactivity when one of them approaches me.

I am a Beagle:
When I followed my prey, I gave a voice so that the hunters could follow me. I was leading the dance.
Today they put an electric collar on me to silence me, and they want me to return to the call in a snap of fingers.

I am a Yorkshire Terrier:
I was a rat catcher, fearsome in the English mines. Today they think that I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

I am a Labrador Retriever:
My vision of happiness is a dip in a pond to bring my master the duck he just shot. Today we forget that I am a sports dog, I am fat and I have to babysit the children.

I am a Jack Russell Terrier:
I am capable of facing a fox larger than me in its own den. Today they blame me for my damn character and want to turn me into a parlor dog.

I am a Siberian husky:
I got to know the great spaces of northern Russia, where I could pull sledges at impressive speed. Today I only have the walls of the garden on my horizon, and my only occupation is the holes I dig in the ground.

I am a Border Collie:
I am cut out to work eight hours a day, and I am an incomparable artist of herd labor. Today they blame me because in the absence of sheep, I try to control bicycles, cars, children from home, and everything that is in motion.

I am...
I'm a 19th century dog

I am handsome, I am alert, I am obedient, I can put up with being in a purse ... but I am also an individual who needs to express his instincts, and I am not suitable for the sedentary life that you want me to carry.

Spending eight hours a day alone on the patio, seeing you a little at night when you come back, and being entitled to any activity just a short walk to the bathroom will make me deeply unhappy.

I'll express it by barking all day, turning your garden into a minefield, relieving myself on the inside, being unmanageable the few times I'll find myself on the outside, and sometimes spending my days on my cushion, then you'll think I'm happy to To be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work: in reality I will be in full depression, because it is not the preference of the human, but also that of the dog of the XXI century.

If you like me, if you dream of me forever, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athlete look make you want to possess me, but you can't give me a real life of a full dog, a life that is really worth living, and if not you can offer me the job my genes claim ... then quit me.
If you like my rhythm but are not ready to accept my character traits from rigorous genetic selection, and you think you can change them with your only good will ... then quit me.

I'm a 19th century dog, yes. But, deep there, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who led a herd still sleeps. And sooner or later, you will wake up. For better or worse.”
