“There will be times that you will ask your horse to go and they will go more than you asked. Praise them for it, this may be nothing more than overachieving”

Happy New Year y’all ☺️.

We spent Christmas and new year in Arizona and are enjoying the warm weather while we still can. Lots of time to ride and get improvements on these horses. Spade is looking and feelin great.

Y’all check out the improvement that Bartender is making. Him stopping on his own is a huge deal because one of the big issues he was having when I got him was not stopping at all. He’s also hustling to his spot and staying there.

Rehoming.

Stay rank y'all!

Apparently, back in the 80’s in Alaska, they were riding Yaks.

And you thought you were “rank” 😂

Happy Sunday friends. Enjoy your families today 😌.

Through all the craziness of COVID-19 I want to encourage all of you to get out and make your horses better!! Many people have some extra time stuck at home and you might as well take advantage of it! We’ve been working on making some broke ponies and riding the fat off the rodeo ponies here!

Also just wanna let y’all know that I appreciate every single one of you and don’t hesitate to get ahold of me personally if you need anything! God bless and stay healthy! 🥰

All horses have teeth, but how could teeth affect your horse’s performance?

Understanding how horse teeth work is essential to diagnosing potential or current problems. We obviously look for our horses to be dropping food or fighting the bit but otherwise we often overlook teeth (out of sight out of mind right?).

Teeth, especially molars, form sharp points that hurt and cause ulcers that make every jaw movement painful. Both molars and incisors can form hooks that limit movement of the jaw that can literally prevent your horse from collecting themselves. When the horse tucks his chin his bottom jaw slides forward and molar hooks prevent this from happening. When horses chew the jaw moves laterally and incisor hooks prevent effective chewing.

Yearly floats are not required and some vets even agree that they are not recommended. However, yearly exams can help prevent big problems from happening saving you time and money in the long run. If a horse is throwing their head or refusing to perform it might be worth while to check their mouth and body for pain and discomfort.

Let's meet Penny. This little mare is 9 years old and is certainly not where she should be coming into her prime. Ms. Penny and I have a little bit of history and have taught each other so much.

I first worked with Penny the winter of 2017 as a outside horse who I rode in trade for hay. She came to me fat as a tick and with a bucking habit that I never did get past during the time I had her. Everyday was round penning for a while before I dared step on her. She had an injured tongue and a fear of the bit that was bad enough she was almost dangerous. And even after all that she managed to ring my bell a few times.

Fast forward to June of 2019. Her owner called and said to go get her because they were not using her and were tired of feeding her. We got to spend some time getting past the bucking habit but I still didn't trust her. I brought her to college with me to be my "broke horse" for the fall semester (I'm still the only one lunging their horse every morning). Penny bucked me off pretty hard when I first got here and it took me a few months to trust her some. We are finishing up 12 weeks of riding this week and this little horse is a completely different mare. We have moved into a shank bit and everything isn't terrifying anymore. We have played around pulling tires and this week we roped the sled. She has learned most of her buttons and I've learned how to ask for them clearly. She's taught me how to feel what my horse is telling me. Some mornings I go to step on and she will tense in way telling me that she needs a few more circles before she's ready to ride. Most of all she's helped me figure out how to ride in a way that communication is clear.

Hey all. I am starting this page as a place to share my journey into the horse business. I am currently attending LCCC to earn a certificate in Equine Training. For now I will be sharing some of the things I am learning.
