Anxiety is something many of us face—it's that uneasy feeling of fear or worry about what might go wrong. As barrel racers, we know the pressure to perform, to improve, to win. But what is anxiety really? It’s our mind and body responding to uncertainty or stress, often in ways that don’t serve us. And here’s the thing—our horses feel it too.

When we’re anxious, our horses can sense it in our energy, our movements, and even our breathing. They’re incredibly intuitive creatures. If we approach the alleyway with tension and doubt, our horse feels it and mirrors it back. What we carry in our hearts and minds becomes the atmosphere around us—and that atmosphere shapes our performance.

But here’s the good news: God didn’t create us to live in anxiety. In fact, He calls us to hand it over to Him. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

God tells us not to be anxious because He is in control. He sees the bigger picture. He knows the outcome before we even make the run. When we trust Him and choose peace over fear, we can breathe deeply, relax, and ride with confidence—and that calmness flows to our horses.

Next time you feel that knot of anxiety tightening in your chest, remember: God’s got you. Take a moment to pray, to thank Him for the opportunity to do what you love, and to trust in His plan. Breathe in His peace and let it settle over you and your horse. Together, you can run free, not weighed down by fear, but lifted by faith.

So, let go of the anxiety. You and your horse deserve to run with joy, with trust, and with the knowledge that you’re already victorious in Him. 🌟

𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞?

Sometimes people like to complicate barrel racing and forget that something as simple as strategically incorporating a pair of split reins into your routine can make a huge difference— 𝙞𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙖.

I wholeheartedly believe split reins can be a (relatively) cheap, safe extremely helpful tool in your training, and when keeping aged horses exercised. When it's time to run, I use a short, single rein, but when it's time to exhibition at the race, or practice at home, I have nice, heavy split reins on my bit (most of the time, horse training is NEVER a 100% exact science.)

This helps my horses know for sure when it's time to run, and when it's time to relax and practice. Imagine if you walked into your house, opened up the door and your office was on the other side, and it was time for work. You wouldn't be prepared, and you'd be anxious without knowing what to expect. And it helps you as a rider, too, to be more consistent and relaxed with your cues and state of mind.

Every new season I’m reminded that God goes before me in every arena. As barrel racers, we train hard and pour our hearts into each run, but it’s His presence that truly guides our path.

𝘿𝙚𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙮 31:6 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙪𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙤𝙪𝙨, for He will never leave us or forsake us—and that promise fuels my confidence on the back of every horse and with every step of my journey. We had a great week at OKC Futurity with this team, which means it's already a new futurity year, and almost a new year calendar year.

It got me thinking. We get so wrapped up in the goals, the years, the futurities, the rodeos, the finals, that we forget about the horses, and that it's about the moments with them.

It's about a horse like Hello Stella having me mess up her first round and coming back with all the power in the world to win second in the second round. She doesn't care whose fault it is. Those horses teach us that we can forget the past and live in the present run.

It's about Talented Angel closing out her futurity season like an absolute champ and all the fun Dale Long and I have had with this horse along the way. She's been confident, classy, honest and reliable—the makings of a great mare. I have no clue what's in store next for Angel, but her journey will be a special one. These young ones teach us to appreciate the present moment, while still being hopeful for their futures.

It's about Nonstop Lane Ta Fame coming out strong and winning money at her first two events, taking scary things all in stride. She's got us excited for the future and everything it could hold.

Seeing God's hand in all of our horses' journeys is inspiring always, but it just makes you say "wow," when you can look at the bookends to the chapters in their lives.

Here's to the next chapter, whatever God says it may hold!

If there's anything we've been reminded by watching the top 15 barrel racers at the NFR this week...it's that God gave us horses.

They're here to pick up the pieces when life is hard, they're here to pull us out of the dark places the devil wants us to live in. Horses bring us into the light, give us joy and hope even in the toughest moments and ultimately can give us what we need to get that much closer to God.

Even the top 15 in the world have been more vulnerable than ever this year and let us know how their horses have helped keep them locked in on their goals, kept their faith strong and helped them survive the impossible. So go outside and hug your horse, and remember why we all started in the sport of barrel racing.
