Well, it's been a heck of a spring here in east Tennessee!!! Wound up expanding back up to 40 or so and have been consolidating to eliminate the weak and struggling colonies in the groups. That said, the small hive beetles are starting to show up and the ants give me fits occasionally.
But all in all, a lot less work, and once I have my own property again, it'll be a great relief to be able to just walk out and work them in smaller groups as needed instead of a whole yard at a time due to drive times.....looking forward to diversifying my operation and adding other agricultural elements to the mix (yep, been toying with getting back into horses again - somebody should talk me out of that one!!! lmao!!).
I've left all the honey on them to feed them through the upcoming dearth here, just because I don't have time for the extra effort of driving feed around. Most have at least 50-70# of honey on them, so again, less work!!
God has blessed me more than I deserve and still gives me daily the support and good works to keep my hands busy and doing his will!! It's nice to be loved!! :)
Spring has sprung.....with a vengence!!! lol!! Already doubled my numbers and not even trying. Good thing I decreased my numbers last season or my workload would be ji-normous right now!!! lmao!!!🤣😎🐝🐝🐝

Was anyone else out working bees in the snow?? lmao!!🤣
Peace on Earth - Good Will Towards Men
Well finally, the honey harvest is over!! It's been a grueling 10 days getting over 5000# of blackberry honey off the hives. Some were 7 or 8 boxes high which meant climbing up onto the concrete block bench supports to reach the top!! Lol!!
Next year I'll be interviewing for harvest help - and hopefully for more beekeeping duties as well...always feels good to be done with bringing in the crop. The excess that the bees give us because we manage them to do so is rewarding and it's reassuring to know that next years business funds are banked in raw product.
I left nearly 6000# on the production units for them to use for themselves (a record season for me), so I'm not feeding yet, and all the treatments are on everyone except the requeening units. So time to thank God for his blessings, take stock of the season, a deep breath and a little rest. ❤🐝🐝🐝
The lavender is in full bloom and the bees have switched from blackberry to the lavender where it's available.....makes getting the honey off imperative now or it'll be a mixed bag of flavors!! lol!!🤪
A little video of one of the methodologies for feeding bees during the dearth (no food in the environment for them). Open feeding works for large groups of colonies that can't be fed with individual feeding systems or are too large to handle on a labor level. They do love their sugar!!
Rebuilding the Builder
Everyone will be happy to know that the last 3 virgin queens that were stuck in a queen bank got placed into their new homes yesterday!! I had several overwintered production units in another yard that were looking puny and so I removed their failing queens and replaced them with new ones. That said, well it's time to rinse and repeat!! Can't get enough of this stuff....lol!! So here's a little video of rebuilding the builder for round 2.
The South Yard Tour
Ok, I didn't fall off the end of the earth, but it feels like it right about now!! lol!! A week of queen placements into mating nucs has worn me out....but as usual it's a good tired - very accomplished tired. I improved my throughput on queen rearing 400% this season (just placed 90 new queens in nucs), had reconfigured to a new queen builder system which was a huge improvement in quality of queen cells, and expanded to 2 mating yards with complementary drone mother yards within 3/4 of a mile on each!!! All but 3 little royal stragglers are placed in new homes and waiting to fly to their destiny....lol!! Now to get all the backed up honey deliveries done!!! It'll be back at the thestevenshomestead this morning.... ?)
Here's what working in that yard sounds like the whole time I'm there!! Now they meet me at the truck when I pull up....lmao!! Nice to be loved.... 😘
Well I got this yard all spun up yesterday!! lol!! Bees everywhere!! .....and some of them not very happy. Amazing how you can follow genetics through a group of animals!
I almost had to remove the 88 queen last year due to aggression (I could hardly open the hive last year due to stings), and then they swarmed and I caught them in a bush, put them in this yard and they settled a bit but are still a little hard to handle.
The bad decision was that I took one of the daughters from the swarm cells and also moved her to this yard (#235), which I put right next door. She's just as pissy as her mother!! lol!!
The whole end of that bench is a pain to work just because I have a dozen or so guard bees in my face dive bombing me the entire time I work those two units.....hmmmmmffff. Even followed me back to the truck and was giving me grief at the end of the video!! Silly girls.....
