It's kitten season.

Adele came to us as a stray from New Richmond - with (at least)
4 tag-alongs in her belly.

You hear "kitten season" and you probably picture fluffy, healthy kittens frolicking through a field of daisies wearing adorable overalls and purring.

Anyone who has ever worked in a shelter hears "kitten season" and starts to sweat a little. Dark, foreboding, low-note-piano-heavy music works towards a crescendo in our ears. Our eyes start to burn. Our skin starts to itch. We have a hard time falling asleep.

We're only partly exaggerating.

Kitten season is NOT A GOOD THING! Kittens are adorable. We get it. But kitten season isn't a handful of adorable, fluffy, healthy kittens frolicking in a field.

Kitten season is a FLOOD of kittens into overcrowded and under-resourced shelters. It's a flood of sick kittens whose eyes are popping out of their heads from infection, and who are carrying illnesses that they will inevitably spread to other cats in the shelter.

It's a flood of orphaned kittens - either truly orphaned by sad circumstance, or (unfortunately, far more often), orphaned by a good Samaritan who found kittens but didn't know to wait for momma to come back.

It's an unsustainable drain on shelter resources - on volunteer and staff hours, on the budget, on physical space, and perhaps most of all on the mental well-being of the folks caring for them.

How's that for a dark and dreary post?? Tell your friends:

KITTENS = DOOM & GLOOM!
[maybe don't do this at your first spring party after you're finally seeing other humans for the first time in a year. Slowly work it into the conversation.]

But YOU CAN HELP!
1. Spay/neuter EVERYTHING. Cincinnati has an abundance of affordable spay/neuter resources. We are lucky to have OAR and UCAN, both low-cost, high-quality spay/neuter resources. And they fix free-roaming (outdoor) cats for FREE! Fix your pets. Fix your friends' pets. Fix the cat on your street. NO EXCUSES!

2. DO NOT pick up stray kittens unless they are in immediate danger. Leave them where they are. They almost certainly have a mom about that's caring for them. Watch the kitten pile closely for several hours to see if mom comes before you even *think* about taking those unweaned kittens to a shelter!

3. Spread the word. We need to rebrand those cute, fluffy little rascals. Remember: kitten = DOOM & GLOOM.

STOP! 🛑

Very soon, the first of the spring kittens will be showing up under decks, sheds and other hiding places. If you find newborn or tiny kittens, your first instinct may be to gather them up and take them to a shelter. Resist this urge!

Wait and watch! 👀 Their mom is likely close by, getting food or otherwise caring for herself. Unless she has been trapped, hurt or otherwise detained, she will return.

Mom is always the best caretaker of kittens; removing them from their mom -- and therefore taking the away from their best caretaker and food source -- will likely lead to the demise of the litter. You may also be signing the kittens' death warrant; the kittens may be immediately euthanized because there aren't enough bottle feeders to care for all the kittens that enter the shelters this time of year. PLEASE, before you take the kittens away, be sure mom has not returned for some time. You may be waiting for hours. Please have patience; watch and wait. The lives of those kittens depend on it!

Grab some tissues 🐾 One of our clients recently found this gorgeous boy outside and contacted us for help. Dr Mike scanned him today and thankfully, he is microchipped. We found his owner by calling the microchip company. It turns out this kitty is named Edward and he has been missing for TWO YEARS! His owner couldn’t believe it when Dr Mike called with the good news. Thanks to our awesome client, Edward is safe and will be reunited with his owner later today ❤️

Please microchip your pets! Also, remember to keep your registered chip info up-to-date. If you find a pet that seems lost, please get the pet scanned for a chip. If your pet needs microchipped, call us at 5135054043 for more info!

We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday weekend!

This is a great program provided by Animal Friends Humane Society! If you live in Butler County and are feeding stray cats, please make sure they are spayed or neutered. Even fixing one cat will make a huge difference!

Animal Friends Humane Society is proud to announce the return of our TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) program. We have made a few changes in order to maintain the safety of our staff, the community, and most of all the cats. We are happy to be helping the community cats of Butler County once again, starting this Tuesday, June 9th. The new rules are as follows so please read carefully:

AFHS will accept up to 8 cats for Spay/Neuter each
Tuesday & Thursday - first come, first served. All cats must be in a trap, one cat per trap! No cats will be accepted in carriers.
Drop off each day will be from 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM at the MAIN entrance. Pick up the following day during business hours. Each cat will be spayed/neutered, ear tipped (tip of the left ear removed to symbolize that they are spayed/neutered - NO EXCEPTIONS), and given a rabies vaccination. This service is FREE, but donations are encouraged to help us continue this vital program!

If you don't have a trap but wish to help the cats in your community, No Problem, we rent them! Stop by Animal Friends anytime during business hours and we can get you set up.

TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) is the most humane and effective approach to addressing the community cat overpopulation. TNR improves the lives of the outdoor cats, decreases the size of the cat colonies over time, and is best for the community.

Today isn't just Earth Day — it's the 50th anniversary of the occasion, first celebrated in 1970!

This Earth Day is also unique because we are recognizing, in awe, how quickly nature restores itself once industrial "progress" pauses — while at the same time wishing health and security for our human friends. We hope you'll join us in honoring our planet today (and every day), and continuing working toward a more harmonious, Earth-friendly future.

As the coronavirus and stay-at-home orders force people to stay in their homes, the Humane Society of Greater Dayton said that it offers protection for the pets of those escaping domestic violence situations.

PLEASE BE AWARE, DON'T DRIVE OVER BAGS IN THE ROAD!!!
This time of year, open all the plastic bags, insulated cardboard boxes met. When you see on the road a bag with the impression that it contains something, don't ride on it but stop by to check the content.
Open your ears and eyes on the edge of the ditches, waste, collective garbage, whether in town or in the countryside.
